So I just found out that PANO will be mailed late this month and next. Printer issues.
Anyway, my white 914-6 Test Mule has 10 pages of coverage in the November issue starting on page 88.
The article was written last January and the photo shoot was at Amelia Island in May.
The November Pano can be viewed online now on the PCA website 
If anyone is interested I have a a few more detailed photos that didn't get used in Pano that I could post and answer questions.

I just read the article. Really cool car. It looks great. The factory front 916 bumper looks amazing compared to the aftermarket reproductions.

I was going to ask who's front end that was, but you answered my question.Well, I’m assuming it’s factory because it looks like the 916 prototype cars and completely different from any aftermarket one I’ve ever seen. The entire car looks great and it’s a very special “one off”. I never knew it existed.

I really wish someone would make an actual repro of the original 916 front/rear bumpers.
Every single aftermarket one i have seen looks like shite, and that includes the ones on my car.

The front bumper cover is a factory 916 piece. Reinhard. the second owner put it on the car because it was cheaper than a chrome one. He crested a hill on the test track and ended in in chain link fencing. He bought the car after that and did the repairs himself and like all of us was watching the $$$.
The front hood crest is a decal.
Reinhard Lechner, the test engineer who bought the car from Porsche is a very interesting person. When I started my research maybe 3 years ago I found him on LinkedIn. This was one of his first projects in his 30 year stint at Porsche. When I emailed him and asked if he was indeed the 2nd owner of this car he replied back in about an hour with the comment, "How nice to hear that my old car is somewhere in the world". During several email conversations he later apologized for not having any pictures. "At those time’s we had no computers and smart phones."
One of the things Porsche tested on this car is a movable steering wheel. Rotate a lever under the dash and the wheel moves up & down. Remember this 1970. Porsche first moving steering wheels was in a 928 years later and not in anything until the 1990's. It looks crude as all they did was cut the knee pad

I agree the aftermarket repros don't look right.
How would one make an actual reproduction? Where are the original molds? With Porsche and therefor untouchable or long destroyed? Is there an original set of 916 bumpers sitting in someone's garage? Who with a 916 would allow their bumpers to be removed and used for mold making? If made, how much would one cost and how many would be sold?

Can’t it now be laser scanned without even touching the car? Then 3D printed? Maybe?

A really nice article in Pano. One little issue I have is the engines for the 916; there was apparently only 3 that were 2.4 S spec, and 7 that were 2.7 RS spec. A fellow I am assisting with research has a 2.7 RS spec with a 1972 serial #. There were a few 2.7S 911's constructed in 1972 as precursors to the 1973 911RS. But the 916 had them beat!

thats a very intertesting story, but I do not have access to the PCA website. Is there any chance to get the pictures or the complete story ? Maybe by buying only that particular article from PCA ?

So I have received some emails from people who are reading Pano. One asked for a better picture of the front suspension. As noted in the article the bars are longer than normal in the car. Reinhard Leichner, engineer at Porsche and 2nd owner, told me that the longer bars made it easier to dial in the spring rate they wanted. Here is a close up that is better than what is in Pano. Note the body modification needed to get the cap off the car.

Very cool car, very interesting story.
There is a picture in Pano of the bottom of the engine / trans.
Would it be possible for you to show detail photos of the gearshift linkage and
bracket / holder for the accelerator cable on the side of the differential ?
I'm installing a 915/916 in my clone and want to compare.
Your clutch cable seems to operate on the same principle as the '70-'71 911
Does the pedal feel different ?

I was thinking the same thing about scanning it. Could do it right on the car, clean up the file and them dump it to a CNC carver to cut a male so a mold could be made.

I just realized, my car (#374) is only 1 off a GT that is also here in the bay area and only 2 off this mule.
They were basically rubbing bumpers at the factory!
My car was "almost famous", watching them Porsche engineers walk by and pulling those other two chassis from the assembly line right behind it.
