914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Fuel pump making noises (I think)

Posted by: DC_neun_vierzehn Nov 28 2021, 06:16 PM

I have a '73 2.0 (the fuel pump was relocated to the front by the PO).

Lately I've been hearing some noises coming from behind dash/frunk area. It sounds like a pulsating strained noise (almost sounds like a duck). The noise isn't constant. I don't recall hearing it when I start up, but I definitely hear it when I pull up to a red light or get off the highway.

I feel like I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump because there's nothing else on when I hear the noise (fresh air box or heat fan in rear).

My question(s): Do fuel pumps make noises like this before they're about to die? Could it be something else?

Here are some pics ...

Make sure your hoses are not bent or kinked. Is your fuel filter and tank filters good? Please change out the hose clamp in the 2nd picture to same style as in last picture. ONLY use band clamp, NEVER worm gear clamp on fuel line as it cuts into the hose.

I did not see any kinks in hoses. I did not see a fuel filter on any of the hoses, but the cutout only provides a limited view. How do I get into that area for a better view? So do I have to pull the gas tank to see that full cavity?

Good suggestion on replacing the worm clamps. What’s the best place to get band clamps? Do chain auto parts stores like an Advanced Autoparts stock them?

Yep, most auto parts should have them. Not seeing a pump mount, is it just thrown in there? Pump needs to be securely mounted. Late pumps rarely fail

I have the same or very similar pump. I hate it ! If it sounds like a duck and looks like a duck it must be a duck . Let me know if you find a quiet one.

It's mounted. You can see the bolt sticking up in the cutout window. There's a bracket and rubber sleeve that goes around the pump and mounts to the bolt sticking up with a nut. It's definitely secure in there.

So the duck sound is normal for this pump? I believe it's a Bosch or at least looks like the Bosch pumps online.

Who can recommend a quiet pump?

I have a hard time believing the duck noises from the fuel pump are common or else I would have read about it on the forum by now. What replacement and available fuel pumps should I consider based off of the pics I have posted (that would be a direct swap)?

Thanks in advance!

Check for blockage on both the supply & return lines. Also rig up a temp pressure gauge you can monitor when driving to determine if your noise correlates to any change in pressure.

So do an Elmer Fudd and put in a new one.

Airtex E8445. It puts out the proper pressure and volume for the FI on a 914. It even works on the 4.0L 964 motor. I used an early 911 fuel pump mount with rubber isolators and it is quiet as a mouse hiding from a cat. And it can be purchased from FLAPS for about $125.00. The outlet fitting is the same size as the fuel lines in a 914.

I cut the nipple off the end of the brass intake fitting and fit one of these on there:

It's a carburetor fuel filter for a 70s ford. But the intake size is the same as the big fuel tank suction fitting on a 914. It protects the pump and works as an adapter.

I have run one on Betty's car for over 20 years with only one replacement. And I really didn't need to. The pump started making noise, and I thought it was going bad. Turns out the rubber mount broke and it was hitting the metal of the car. The pump was fine. I just replaced it because I was already in there.

I have two spares, but never needed them. The one I removed from Betty's car now has lines and wires with alligator clamps on the wires. I use it as a fuel transfer pump to empty a 914 tank before I pull it.

Hope that helps.

I found the Airtex E8445 pump on https://www.amazon.com/Airtex-E8445-Universal-Line-Electric/dp/B001BFOBXA/ref=asc_df_B001BFOBXA/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312695966306&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7346343017523914712&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031326&hvtargid=pla-473570472394&psc=1.

Just an additional thought...

I always put a fuel filter in the engine compartment to protect the injectors. If you use one designed for fuel injection systems, then it is readily accessible and easy to change.

I use the fuel filter for a 1988 Nissan Maxima.

Here is a link to the fuel filter: https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/find/1988-nissan-sentra-fuel-filter.c6538.

I put it inline in the engine compartment between the fuel line and the fuel rail on the engine.

I realize I’m a bit late here but I got a Bosch 69133 pump from PartsGeek for around $66, made in the Czech Republic. Only difference was threaded instead of spade terminals.

Runs at about 31 psi at idle, no buzzing... beerchug.gif
