914World.com _ 914World Garage _ PartsHeaven Gone Now Where to Shop?

Posted by: mmascari Dec 3 2021, 11:08 AM

I live in the SF Bay Area and used to go to Parts Heaven for 914/911 used parts. Now that they are gone where is the best place to buy used parts? Where did all their inventory go?

Easy in Emeryville is also gone.

I believe that Auto Atlanta bought all the 914 inventory of both of them.

I Don't Live in SF but sad to hear Easy is gone

Seems to be the way. Several of my local parts stashes have been sold or disappeared. Getting harder to find. I hope the kids that inherited Dad's stuff that they did not want didn't just junk it all. I get my best sources from friend of a friend references now. Sometimes all I get is a first name from some town has a bunch of parts. Hard to track down but worth it when I find them.

we did buy tractor trailers of Al's inventory. Al was and is a great guy, but with three giant warehouses paid off and each one renting for 15 grand a month, and Al in his 60s why continue to, as Al said, put up with the headache of retailing? Now he can sit back do what he wants to do, and collect 45 grand a month rent!!

Rich is a very good guy and we are happy that he does not retire either. He is the true 914 parts hoarder as he loves the cars so much, and has his four story building carefully organized for only HIM to know where to find the part!!! (LOL) but if you call him, he will have the part

Didn’t Rich put his parts business up for sale?

Last I spoke to him was end of 2020 and said he was selling.

These are the guys I used predominantly on my 914-6 conversion build.
They usually had everything second hand and the parts were always in great condition.
Ask for Roger. They are up in the New England area of the country, but shipping was reasonable and always prompt.
That was my experience anyway.
You're mileage may vary....

If anyone is looking for large 914 stashes let me know, I routinely get offered them but always pass since we do all 356/911/912, too late to learn anything new and nowhere to put a whole other line of parts.
Much of the stuff we do get I give away at Ski Roundtop every year along with the VW stuff.
But if anyone is looking to start hoarding, I can probably pass you leads on the regular. Happy to see the stuff go somewhere.
Wish I had room!

I always buy the 914 parts but how to move it all reasonably is the problem

Here is a good story I wrote about the logistics of buying and moving a large stash, a lot of people don't realize how much work it entails.

We moved two 25’ Penske trucks full of Porsche parts from Huston to PA in May. Packing the parts, loading the parts, driving x-country, unloading and storing. Costly and time consuming. No way to make it work financially with 914 parts, even if they were free.
Plane flights
Truck rental
Forklift rental
Purchase 160 plastic bins
Purchase $2k lumber to make wood crates
Hotels in Huston and trip back
Food and transportation
Probably $15 + in expenses.

Yeah, people don't get it, until they do it. People also don't understand how to price stashes until you explain the math to someone. I was recently at a shop outside of Chicago and a guy had a small warehouse of 356 and 911 parts. I asked how much he wanted and he said, "there is at least six digits of parts here." Meaning $100,000. I said ok, let's do the math. In order for me to pay you $100,000 there has to be at least $150,000 in parts for me to buy it, box it, ship it, sort it, and then sell it. And in order to get to $150,000 I picked up a Zenith carb and said "this is worth about $100." He agreed. I said I have to reach into this stash and grab a part worth $100, and then do it again 1500 times. Lift your arm in the air 1500 times, it's really really hard to do. The guy didn't understand the math, so I left.

Even once it’s at home and in storage, it took days for someone to look up each part, price it, then enter in a spread sheet.
Then we still have to list it, sell it, package and ship.
It’s also a lot of money to tie up in parts. It doesn’t all sell overnight.
We look for a 1/3 ratio to make it worthwhile.

Digging those trans out of a hot Huston loft definitely made me feel old.

And deal with the inevitable returns because people can't read or think they are smarter than you.
