914World.com _ 914World Garage _ VDO Fuel Gauge Installation

Posted by: mmascari Dec 9 2021, 11:53 AM

Hello, looking for assistance installing a VDO fuel gauge. I am hoping someone has installed one and knows what wires connect to what terminals. Attached photo. There are two terminals and I assume these connect to the fuel sender. There is also a red/white/black set of wires. Any assistance would be great.

I also have this diagram that shows stock wiring to stock fuel gauge is
Ground(Brown)
Green
2(Red/white stripe)

S = sensor
- = ground
+ = hot wire

The other 2 posts look to be a light ? Flip the gauge over and take a pic.
Are you sure that the gauge will work with your fuel tank sensor?

I take this is a GT style fuel gauge?

I can't confirm it will work. I assume it would.

I found this doing a search, so maybe I need to get the correct gauge:

Posted from LarryM:

here is the info from 2004 for correct gauge

"here is the answer via VDO Support:

Use VDO Part Number 301 020 with the OEM 914 fuel sender; (spec'd for Beetle O.E. sender or VDO 221012 sender): 73 - 10 Ohms, "Fuel"

The reading will be off slightly but will not be noticeable

914 fuel gauge is 0-90 ohms.

I was looking at the existing stock wiring to the fuel gauge and it shows
Ground
Green
2 red/white stripe
+

What is the red/white stripe wire?
I assume Green is from the sending unit

Fuel gauge itself has two wires:
Red/White: keyed power
Green: to the sender

The black wire goes to the low fuel lamp

Sender has three wires:
Green: gauge
Brown: ground
Black: low fuel light inside the gauge

Awesome, thanks.

So, the Red/White would go to the + terminal on the gauge, the Green to the S on the gauge and the brown to the - on the gauge?
