My local Porsche dealer sells the parts at a discount. Still expensive but better than paying retail.

i think originals were made of bakerlite?
these days = rarely used very old form of plastic.
no surprise its expensive - would be difficult to source a supplier to remake in original materials?
........thats if this is a remake in bakerlite?
more expensive in aus.
i was in at porsche getting some other stuff a couple of years back and i sighted one in the display cabinet. tag was $500.00 aud.

Bakelite, it's still used, phenolic intake spacers are a type of bakelite, but since the early 80's they no longer have asbestos in them.

I think Porsche's problem is that they regard the potential customer of Porsche Classic as the same type customer that buys a brand new Panamera or Cayenne every other year. Parts buyers actually fix their own cars and are savvy enough to see through this sort of overpriced boutique marketing bull****.

don't feel like paying to get
to find out.mine has had a crack in the bottom of it i glued up 30 years ago that is still holding.
should have been smart enough to buy a new one back then before the wallet raping started.

Yeah, that ain't cheap. I bought one from Porsche (Gaudin) and they gave me a very good price, right in line with the discount price listed above by Mark.
I wonder if there is any difference in feel or appearance from the reproductions being made. I figured it was something I was going to be handling a lot and wanted the stock knob.

From what I can tell it's not Bakelite, but Delrin that has been turned down. Just like the ones we make. I could do a GB in Bakelite, tooling is not inexpensive. But I could sell at 1/2 the price, maybe less. Like anything just takes enough folks that want them.

Of two minds about prices for 914 parts:
1) Ouch (but this is nothing new for factory parts)
2) We should be glad so many parts for our cars are available
I carried a full set of hoses in my Merkur Xerati wherever I went, because I knew I'd never find them when I needed one—which was pretty often. And those were among the easier parts to get in 1997-2001. I can't even imagine owning one as a daily now.

Delrin just doesn't feel the same as original Bakelite, but at least it stays on with screw at the base.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=24231 Thought about replacing mine as his has the very typical crazing in the clear part, but "that's to be expected" and adds to the originality aura that I'm trying to keep (though that left foot driver's corner carpet piece IS scheduled for replacement once the weather warms up a bit

The crazing on the clear part can often be buffed to significantly minimize it.

Shift knobs seem to be one of those fetish parts, where people spend lots for variations on stock--or on knobs that are anything but stock. Look at any late model 911 forum.

i will retire the original to a class display cabinet.
glad all the rest of the dumb knobs on my interior are vw.

Nice--especially with the current $1095 "discounted" price tag.
For those not fluent in current Porsche pricing, especially on, ahem, frivolous accessories, check out the price for having leather covering on the 911 center dash vent slats--only $2700!
