914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Red Rocks Classic 2022 - Sept. 15-18

Posted by: Eric_Shea Jan 25 2022, 04:03 PM

"It's never too early to promote an awesome 914 event!"

If you’ve never been, now’s the time. Special events are already in the works. From the largest air-cooled kickoff party (and we do mean party) to spectacular awards and prizes. It’s the people that make these events amazing.

That said, the icing on the cake are the drives! There’s nothing quite like the sensation of driving your 914 the way it was meant to be driven in the mountains and the deserts of the Mountain West.

Put it on your Calendar in “Pen”. We’ll keep everyone informed and updated herein. Host hotel is still in the works but we have great accommodations in our backyard. We hope to see “you” in Salt Lake City September 15-18th, 2022!!

THURSDAY - Opening night “Air Cooled Bash”. ninefourteen |nine-for,tēen| - 70’s Love child of VW and Porsche.

What better a way to celebrate than to bring all of our VW air cooled brethren together with our Porsche air cooled family for one amazing “Air Cooled Bash”. Rage Against the Supremes will be the band for the evening (there might be some special guests sitting in!) Free brats, dogs and suds while supplies last.

FRIDAY - Epic drive on epic roads along the stunning Wasatch Front and the Wasatch Back. Park City Main Street fun in the sun.

SATURDAY - Sunrise on the Salt. An optional early morning drives nets the best light for the “Ultimate 914 Photo Shoot” on the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats then it's off to Kindig-It Design where Dave has agreed to host the Red Rocks Classic teener crew with lunch and a private shop tour. (Thanks Dave!) We’ll wrap it up with another photo opt with the RRC 914’s parked in front of their shop. A car show and a grand finale dinner and awards ceremony will wrap things up.

SUNDAY - Round'em Up. Head'on out. There may be a canyon cruise for those who crave the twisties. wink.gif

To RSVP and stay up on the latest and greatest from the RRC team, visit our website here: http://www.redrocksclassic.com

Yup. MDB2.gif I have brought a couple of different Caymans, a VW Rabbit and a 350Z to Red Rock Classics.
Heck, if they welcome guys with Subaru powered teeners, I figure pretty much anything goes. poke.gif
(With the exception of maybe a rented Mustang convertible or a Corvette.) jerkit.gif
WARNING: if you bring an air-cooled 911, parts may go missing if you leave the car unattended. ph34r.gif

Remember when the 4 of us got stuck behind that Prius.

I remember being stuck behind this guy in a hot rod 911 that was running so rich, every time I got close enough to set up a pass, my eyes were burning and watering so bad from the gas fumes, I would have to back off so I could regain my vision.

I never did get around Salmon Boy.

Saw Eric and Diane yesterday at the All Porsche Swap Meet at the Boys Republic in Chino Hills CA. Always great to see and talk with Eric. @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1110

He told me that after the swap meet they were heading back to SLC and then turn it back around again and head to The Amelia. Wish I was going this year again but maybe next year.

Also saw @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=244 , @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=822 , and Oscar @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=16669 . Great swap meet, scored!

I am going to do my absolute best to attend RRC 2022.

OK @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1110 ... convince us as to why we should go NorthWest to SLC instead of going East-NorthEast to Okteenerfest?

It is a slightly longer drive to get there and back. And it means crossing the Rockies.
And we did that drive to get to Parade one year.

So basically... what's in it for us? biggrin.gif

I think the big question is, which one have you been to the most? Both are really nice drives but the humidity is lower here. Our altitude will also give you a good workout as well. I know Banner Elk had the cool ski area but they don't really compare to the 8000ft base areas that are in our backyard. Will they have a band on Thursday like we will? Will you meet anyone you haven't met before back east? Put a face with your Admin skills! It's a difficult dilemma but you'll figure it out!

That's a good question for all.

We'll be wrapping up the payment portal on the site today. The main holdup is the restaurant menus for the lunches and dinners. We want that (along with shirt sizes etc.) to all be incorporated on the same form. We're currently waiting on the manager of the Saturday night banquet to get us their available menu choices. I'll be pushing all week so it should be soon.

...you'll see a "Hotel" tab at the top. There's a link there that has the special group rate. Here's a link here as well:

https://www.marriott.com/event-reservations/reservation-link.mi?id=1648587891679&key=GRP&app=resvlink

If you are booking outside the 9/15-9/17 window, you may want to call and request the rate for those extra days. I know that Jim Hoyland was able to successfully get an extra day added to his reservation.

You can also call Marriott reservations direct. If you prefer to call you must identify yourselves as having a "Group Rate" and specifically state you are with "Red Rocks Classic" at the time of making your reservation.

We will be leaving Tuesday afternoon after work. We hope to arrive on Thursday in time to make it to the evening festivities.

Gonna trailer Igor (the 914-6 4.0L car). That way we can switch out driving at every gas stop.

Looking forward to a great time!

We use Dave’s chassis stiffening kits and engine mounts on virtually every -6 build here at PMB. smilie_pokal.gif

Very true and I have been getting some drive time and been fixing some stuff as it comes up.

- Hope to have the SS fuel line swap done before, I grabbed them from Tangerine Racing.
- Maybe the Fuel Pump Relocation too but so far all has been ok with vapor lock and such.

Booked solid again. All paid and all done. Live band, sound and lights, 2 dinners, 2 lunches, door placards, t-shirts, coffee & donuts for 80+ people, employees to staff and help run the event all cost money which is why the minimal fee (that still didn't cover the expenses). So, a freebie isn't really free at that point.

Posted by: Eric_Shea Aug 24 2022, 04:40 PM

Some schedule changes gang! Some will cheer and I'm certain a few may jeer.

First off... mother nature's squarely in charge and she has different plans for our "Ultimate 914 Group Shot". As previously mentioned in this thread, things have been a little "wet" shall we say. We know a lot of you wanted to see the Salt Flats. That said, due to extremely unusual rain in Wendover, the area of the Flat's that we were headed to is currently under 6" of water. Our friends at "World of Speed" have cancelled their event as well and, it's two weeks "after" our little soiree was schedule for.

Attached Image

Attached Image

Fear not, our massive event planning committee (Larry, Eric, Diane and Ian) huh.gif have come up with an alternate for the day "and" it doesn't require you waking up at "Oh-Dark:30" in the morning! cheer.gif

We'll meet and greet at PMB in the morning where we know a guy that can unlock the doors and show us around the shop. Then it's off to Kindig-It Design where Dave has agreed to feed us lunch and give us a tour of the most "Bitch'n" restoration facility in the world!

After that we got a "World-Class Invite" to the Largest VW Show in Utah! They'll be saving a space just for our group and holding off judging until the parade of 914's arrive. beerchug.gif

Next course change is in the Uinta National Forest run to Provo Falls. We ran into a couple of issues when running our route. Fees, Parking and Time. When we discussed with the Park district, they declined a fee waver for the 50 cars if we planned to stop along our route so, there's another $300 in fees. Not the biggest problem... that would be "Parking"! They have roughly 12 spots at the falls and that leaves 38+ cars to park along side the winding mountain road with rather sharp drops off the pavement. No thank you. Add to that, turning the cars around on a two lane mountain road seemed excessive and dangerous. The icing on that cake is, this would take close to 2 more ours out of our afternoon. The decision was made to head to Browns Canyon after lunch and then straight to Park City's Historic Main Street where we'll have a once in a lifetime 50 car 914 Parade down Main Street (replete with a drone shot of the caravan) before we set you free to wander and spend money on food and t-shirts.

All reservations are in. All members have paid. All shirts are on order. Thanks to everyone for helping to make this an amazing Red Rocks Classic! See you soon!

you could have just left it as "booked". it's fine, everything I've tried to do to get there seems to have some miscommunication or something blocking it anyway. these prototypes would have been fun to show up with on my car... oh well. (not that the person who was wanting me to design them answered my question about if it's a paid gig or not. all i got was "can you deliver?". they'd have been done and delivered if I wasn't left feeling like I'm just supposed to design things for other people for free)

Live band, sound and lights, 2 dinners, 2 lunches, door placards, t-shirts, coffee & donuts for 80+ people, employees to staff and help run the event all cost money which is why the minimal fee (that still didn't cover the expenses). So, a freebie isn't really free at that point.

you could have just left it as "booked". it's fine, everything I've tried to do to get there seems to have some miscommunication or something blocking it anyway. these prototypes would have been fun to show up with on my car... oh well. (not that the person who was wanting me to design them answered my question about if it's a paid gig or not. all i got was "can you deliver?". they'd have been done and delivered if I wasn't left feeling like I'm just supposed to design things for other people for free)

huh.gif I just wanted you to know why I couldn't trade it for a giveaway item. I thought you may have deserved an explanation. Now if you wanted to be creative with drive flanges…

Regarding your flares. For a retailer the question “Can you deliver?” preempts the price in my book. In the past, you haven’t been know for clarity or “delivery”. Which is why I asked. This thread is neither the time or the place for this conversation. You have my number.

How long a drive are we shooting for?

Timpanogos (92) through Sundance then up the 189 to Heber/ then Park City is a fun drive to get there as well.

Even better if you cut back though Midway/Wasatch Mountain State park to Guardsman pass and go top down to deer valley/park city.

I'm driving 7 hours to get there and 7 hours back home. I expect 14 hours of curvy roads chowtime.gif

But seriously, the more the better, but broken up into segments, because there is usually half the group that feels fulfilled early.

I'd be interested in a side trip Sunday to do sight seeing.

That's almost a better route for motorcycles...AF canyon gets really crowded around this time of year, some corners are 5mph if that, and the dirt section before dropping into Midway is rough on suspensions. Going through Sundance this season isn't much fun either. JMHO... East can be fairly quick with lots of great turns. We've got the options for sure!

Guessing is been a while since you been up Guardsmans? They completely paved it all the way through a few years ago and put up some guard rails on some of the upper sections as well.

The Alpine loop section to Sundance does get tight and twisty (but thats what makes it fun) It can slow down pretty bad if you get stuck behind a mini van or something though.

^ that be the road im talking about! smile.gif

Biggest thing you need to worry about is moose around blind corners.

Seriously not kidding

Was coming over from the Big Cottonwood side a couple years ago with my daughter, whip around one of the corners past a pickup pulled off on the side of the road about 1 second before I realized WHY the pickup was pulled off the road.

This big ol moose was just standing in the middle of the road.

threw it in reverse REAL quick and hid behind the pickup until he decided to start trotting down the road and eventually into the brush.

Ben from "914-6 Werkshop" has come on board as a Red Rocks 2022 sponsor with a pair of their custom machined oil filter consoles.

These are the kits with the o-ring, filter, and hardware. These fit the 65-73 911 oil tanks and all 914-6's. The cool thing is it uses the newer version OC54 filter which was used on the 74-89 911 oil tanks. These filters have the internal bypass spring which eliminates the gumming up of the mechanical bypass of the older OEM filter consoles!

Great item for those looking to build a -6 conversion (or just wanting to bring theirs up-to-date a bit).

We are leaving Tuesday after work. We will stop in Amarillo for the night. Wednesday we will make it to Moab and stay the night (Hotels in Moab are outrageously expensive!). We will make it to Salt Lake City around noon on Thursday. That way we can be there for the party Thursday night.

Originally I planned to drive my 914 the 475 miles from Vallejo to Elko on 9/14 and then on to the Fairfield Midvale the following day. Plans changed this last weekend when after a 2 1/2 hour drive it broke down on Hwy 101 one mile from the motel I had booked for the night. Long story short; flat bed tow, replaced the fuel filter, able to get to the driving event at Laguna Seca, and limped home the following day. The 914 has been running great for the last 10 years but is hesitating at speed and stumbling on acceleration now. I figured I would start with a tune up and replace plugs and the coil. Now I just don't feel confident in driving over the Sierras and so far from home. So the new plan is to fly into SLC Thursday morning and rent a car at the airport. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and the 914s that are running better than mine

Having driven behind you, I am figuring an extra day. Maybe head out on Monday. Fixing the air dam and fog light housing today. I am my own worst enemy and had bruised both. A few more things to work on, and hope that I don’t have to buy a pickup truck to tow a trailer home. My wife has always liked driving big rigs of all sorts.

I feel like that is just about every mountain road adjacent to the Salt Lake/Provo valleys these days, at least on the weekends. I used to fly up big Cottonwood near flat out ~15 years ago, now its almost always a parade of cars going 35 mph. Think i have just lost the expectation of hitting significant speed on any of those roads Sat-Sun.

I was originally planning to drive my 914 from Sacramento since my wife is flying in,
I have only had it on the road a year now and decided it was too far from home to risk.
So I will be flat towing mine from Sacramento, have not figured out stops yet.

Oh and I guess I better finish the brakes on the 914.

Driving from Denver. Can make part of the drive a work trip as I am frequently in Grand Junction for work. Heading west on Tuesday, 2 hours stop for lunch another two hour to Grand Junction. Heading out Thursday with similar plan., So two hour stints with breaks should get us there. Going with Porsche friend that also works for the same company. Ten years ago, in 2012, Porsche Parade was in Salt Lake City. That year we drove Betty's 914 all the way from Fort Worth to Salt Lake City, 1.5 times.

We got to Dumas, Texas (8 hours down the road), and the bottom end on the engine starting knocking. So we loaded it up on a U-Haul trailer and took it home. I slept while she drove. When we got home, we unloaded the car, and I went to work while she slept.

I returned the rental truck and trailer alone, and dropped the motor. I replaced it with a tired 2.0 we had in the garage. I started it up, and pronounced it good. We left for Salt Lake again. We never even unpacked the car.

Leaving Grand Junction Colorado, the oil cooler started to leak. Not the seals, the actual cooler. We poured 8 quarts of oil into the motor between Grand Junction and Salt Lake City.

We took a taxi to the Parade hotel and registered. Then a trip to the local VW shop where I bought an oil cooler. Then I proceeded to change the oil cooler in the parking lot of the hotel where we were staying. Yes, you can do it with the engine in the car.

We missed tech for the AX, but we pulled a small string, and they let us tech at the AX the next day.

I won my AX class that year. driving.gif

We also went out driving in the mountains around SLC, and had a grand time.

The tired old motor started getting weaker on the way home, but it made it. I rebuilt the original engine and it is sitting on an engine stand waiting to go back in the car.

So all y'all worried about driving your 914 from places like Sacramento or Denver, well, y'all need to stop worrying and just drive! driving.gif driving-girl.gif

I make no promises, but would be cool to have 2 Bumblebees together for the party.

Getting close but dealing with lots of frustrating little fiddily stromberg.gif thats taking longer than i would like.

Looking for a cooler trip out than earlier this summer. Toying with leaving on Monday. I have about 20 hours each way, and I am even older than the car is. So it can be readily done in three days, but four days gives me a cushion. That said, it looks like rain on Monday. But, I would be driving west through the rain. Donna has been stocking items that I usually forget.

Posted by: worn Sep 8 2022, 05:45 PM

Well I tried to get the wing window to actually seal against the car to avoid intermittent showers. Then the window fell off the plastic button, being a ‘72. So that was a little extra work. Crossing off things to be done to the car along with things to pack. Pretty sure I will be starting off on Monday. I still am a bit confused: I know why you would rage against a soulless machine. But the Supremes? They got a whole lotta soul. Can hardly wait to find out. Looks like at the beginning I have to drive through the rain.

Well I got the plugs and coil changed and my teener is much happier now. I keep forgetting however that I'm not as young as I once was and 8 hour drives across the desert in record heat just don't agree with my delicate constitution anymore. Odd as it seems, that bit is part of the fun/adventure for me.

~24 years of 914 ownership, more cross state adventures then I can count anymore (some for leisure, some not) and while I have had my trials at the side of the road, 914s have always gotten me to my destination in the end.

I find the relaxing part for me comes when I get home, knowing i made it. biggrin.gif

After all, life is the journey, not the destination.

Totally get it if the car isnt ready though, slap a Porsche sticker on the hooptie, grab a rental, whatever. hope you are able to make it!

Smoke signals from engine to driver: not on fire, but losing oil pretty quick.

Near Radar O'Reily's home in Iowa, I saw clouds of smoke coming from trhe engine bay. No flames. Long story short, a small machine screw holding engine tin had backed out. The worst part is that the screw normally plugged a hole connected to the cam tower oil gallery. Not sure if this is normal for a six, but the oil certainly oozed out of the hole pretty fast. And then onto the headers, giving a warning sound.

So near Cedar Falls Iowa I pulled into a Kum and Go parking lot. Using the stock jack I managed to lift the car and destroy the jack. Anyone looking to sell a stock jack at RRC I am your guy. Got the right rear wheel off and put my new collapsible jack stands in use. To plug the hole I looked around and removed this

To fill this spot. Experts can chime in as to whether this ought to plug an oil passage on the cam tower.

Hi Guys,

We made it as far as Albuquerque NM tonight. Wednesday it is off to Grand Junction to spend the night with family then we will drive up Thursday morning. I have looked at the Facebook page and the web page for the RRC and don't see much detail there... haven't had time to sift through this thread. Is there a schedule for Thursday other than check in at the hotel? Where is the part that night, and when? I see on the PMB site the "Air Cooled Bash" starts at 6pm at PMB. Is that where everyone is going?

Sorry, tired, long day driving up here from Austin. The toad did good though, no issues even with a nasty rainstorm east of here as we were coming in.

See everyone Thursday afternoon!

Yeah. That is me below the car wash. Actually, a real car wash dumps less water. Couldn’t see the FedEx marking on the truck fifty feet aahead - going slow in a construction zone.

Left Tuesday with my friend John (his 911) to Grand Junction for a couple days of work. Then on to Salt lake. First half of trip to GJ was uneventful.

Attached Image

Heading to Salt lake tomorrow, Thursday, mid morning.

At the gas station this morning in GJ there was a group of people with classic Euro cars. Asked one of the guys in a Austin 3000 were the rally was going and he said they were headed to Moab. Told him I was heading to a event in Salt lake in my 73 914. He said ah Red Rocks classic, I was supposed to go but ended up doing this instead, Goes by Ferg on 914world, said it was one of the first Red Rocks he will miss. Small word sometimes.
Look forward to meeting you all tomorrow.

Entertainment was great, rides were ‘bitchin’ and everything was well planned. Of course hanging and driving with all the World members is what made it special, and we always look forward to these events.

Safe travels back home and hope to see you soon.

After stressin whether or not the Jellybean would survive the trip, the return was pretty uneventful till I had to stop at a rest stop outside of Hermiston.

Glad to hear it. 1314 miles round trip in a crappy rental car for me, but I did arrive home to find all the parts I needed to get the 914 on the road, just a week late, grrrr!

Had a great time at Red Rocks. Eric thanks so much for organizing.

I meet so many new people and for me its hard to put together faces, cars and names on 914world. Thought it might be nice to post picture of yourself and your car to put screen name, car and person together.

Here is mine.

We made it home around 9pm central time last night.

It was a long 2 days of driving home, but the trip was well worth it.

Thanks Eric and company for putting this event together! We know how much work one of these events takes.

Me too. Thanks Eric!

Pictures later. I had trouble shifting about the same place in central Nebraska where the oil leak sprouted. Turns out the motor had fallen off the mounts. Yep. And still cruising happily at 85 mph. As the last nut fell backing off the motor began impinging on the shift rod. I pulled off the freeway to try again to figure out what was going wrong, and as I did the gear shift froze solid as the shift rod was holding up the whole engine. I bet if I had walked back up the exit ramp I would have found it.
So, I unpacked the jack I bought from Harbor Freight when the original jack died. Luck was really with me that I bought it. Used the jack to lift the motor back into place. But I didn't bring a 10 mm nut along as a spare. Hmmm. A starter clearly only needs a single nut to function. Swaparoo and I was off to a hardware store about 15 miles off route to buy spare fasteners. Starter nut replaced in the parking lot along with the other mount nut. You have to reach in with a 17 end wrench to hold the bolt. Told myself "remember the end wrench". The wrench fell out 10 feet from the next gas pump. Luck got me home.
Siri on the other hand was hit and miss. S/he didn't know they hadd moved the off ramp a couple hundred yards... blink.gif

You folks surely doth rocke!

I have a bronze bushing at the transmission for the shift rod and a spherical bearing at the fire wall. Total cost $9. But also home made. I tend to worry about the stuff I make because they are by definition prototypes. This was the trip of shifting trouble. It was starting on the way out and culminated with the motor lying on the shift rod. There are about a half dozen nuts of that size that are accessible and I had already lost two.

At RRC I finally caved in and let my phone navigate me. Great for Salt Lake City. Coming home in north eastern Iowa you have to transfer from I80 to highway 151 near Dubuque and it falls into stoplights for a stretch. So, I let Siri drive. Siri apparently cannot see. It took me into a construction zone that happened to be a hundred yards past where the new and improved exit really was. That led me to Dubuque through little towns. In that construction zone I hit something metal. After that I struggled to shift gears. Again. And it was getting pretty dark. The thing had pushed the plastic hat that protects the joint for the shift rod to the tranny. Pushed it in so that the plastic impinged on the joint. WTF.gif made it home though. Car is back in shape and ready to go again.
But as Eric pointed out: Awarded to the person who probably shouldn’t have come…

Just before we left I met Dave.

He asked which car was mine and proceeded to go over and check it out. As some know I got this car as a project where the flares and paint had been done in 1995.

I acquired the car in 2013 with this awesome Imron paint. I have never really been a fan of the flag mirror choice but know it really can't be changed because paint could never be matched properly to the Imron.

To my surprise Dave commented on the mirrors right away saying that he really liked them on the car. My wife said the look on my facce was priceless. Thanks Dave for a new found liking for my mirrors smile.gif

They came on the car when I bought it. I have always thought they were regular G Body 911 flag mirrors and therefor likely has the same door contour.

The person to best answer this question is Larry from PMB as he chose them for his car.

Pardon the stretched pic it is a crop of a wide shot.

I believe…. But could be wrong. That the 944 mirrors were commonly used as they fit the contour better than the 911 version

It’s been years since I messed with them and I could have that wrong

A big thanks to Stratplayer for making my trip to RR2022 great. Ferried me from and back to the Slc airport, got to ride with Jim for 3 days, and drove his fabulous 75 914.
Attached is a you tube video of a trip from the host hotel to PMB and what I saw upon arriving at PMB.
Thank you

You can swap the bases, but beware of the right hand drive mirrors from the UK and Japan. I bought a set from Japan and could not figure out why the passenger side was so messed up.
What's nice is that you can get electric ones and I think they look better than the aero mirrors since they are square like our cars.

Good reminder. Would love to see the drone video when its ready ~

Yes a video was made of the cars going down main street in park city. One of the PMB employees made the video. I've seen parts of that video. A lot of videos were made but none showing up for viewing.

I got a surprise package in the mail this weekend.

How cool is it that not only did I win a raffle prize despite rushing out the door without my ticket, it's something that was at the top of my wish list because it's something I would use.

Fun Fact; Bob Burtons arm sling is event T-Shirts..

Fun Fact: It has taken this long for me to get MRI and approval and I am going into Cedars for a rebuild on my left shoulder rotator cuff and I'm going to be down and out for the count for several weeks.

Hope to see you all very soon

Best Bob B Burton

things didn't go too good today as far as them being able to do repair because there was so much damage, the doctor said arthritis was so bad that it had shredded the muscles at the rotator cuff so he cleaned out bone spurs and arthritis. They did a nerve block on the arm, so I won't feel anything on the arm or 24 hours. Thursday and we'll know possibilities of what we can do I believe that i may need a completely new shoulder. that is a question, but hey I'm alive. They only had me set for a 2 hour time slot and had to do more operations the same day. I am sure that the next fix is going to take a long time as far as hours goes.

best regards Bob

Hope that you can recover as best towards 100% on the surgery. In 2020, Dr. Golden (CSMG) did my corrective rotator cuff surgery, and their follow up p/t on San Vincente Bl. got me back to 95% strength.
Dwight was my p/t, approx 12 visits, combined with my home workouts.

Damn Bob, that doesn't sound like the preferred scenario...but know the doctors know exactly what they're looking at so it's not all bad news. If you need a complete replacement, that's easier than some repairs. They didn't want to do a complete replacement on mine even though it looked nasty...I wasn't quite to that point yet. I asked, why the hell not?? I would've gone with one to eliminate doing it in 10 years when my recovery would've been longer and more uncomfortable. I'm sure you trust your doctors and so do I...whatever they decide, make sure they show you all of the evidence and rehab you'll need before the work is done. I know you will...all I'm doing is reinforcing what you already know. Best of luck!
