icon_bump.gif Initial Planning Thread for the WCR 2022 in Brookings, OR for JULY 22-24, 2022

Brookings is a Southern Oregon Coastal town, 7 miles from the California Border with arguably the most "beautiful" Coastline in America (USA), where the Ocean meets the Mountains and the Coastal Redwoods.

We have a fun-filled planned weekend with some great events (i.e. People's Choice Car-show, Tech Session, live music, 914 World Quiz-make sure you know your fellow 914 members well) and spectacular drives.

As usual, we will have T-Shirts, Swag Bag and Awards Banquet.

We have the Hotel already nailed down. More info and photos to come. Price will be less than $100/night with Ocean views. NOTE: There will be ample Trailer space.edit

COME JOIN US and Chime in on this Thread.

Keep checking in this Thread for continued updates. Looking forward to an awesome event. red914.jpg creamsicle914.jpg ravenna914.jpg blue914.jpg aubergine914.jpg

Easy Peasy . Petaluma is the halfway point.

That last 20 miles in to Southern Oregon is a climb that will have those engine temperatures climbing! blink.gif Beautiful country though…

My daughter and I have both managed to not get Covid although we both work directly with Covid patients. We managed this by being careful. Although I love WCR, if I go depends on what the pandemic is doing. We will see.

Kent, pushing on to Eureka might work best. The run up 101 is a great drive. Don't do it in the dark. There is a large herd of Roosevelt Elk. If they're on the road, you wait. Last time for me the tourists were out shooing, trying while out of the safety of their cars, them off the road and taking pictures. A bull RE is pretty big and can be testy during rutting season. My oldest son lived in Eureka. I dove down a couple of times a year. I-5 north and exiting at Grant's Pass, then heading west and south is the long way to get to get to Cresent City and then Brookings.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9964 Kent, there are any number, from the Motel 6 where we did WCR in 2020 or a Best Western, to a Hampton Inn. Right downtown is Hotel Petaluma. If you don't want to park your car at the hotel, you could park at my place (I'm down a county lane, very secure) and I could shuttle you to your hotel. Or you could always UBER.

If anyone is trailering, you're welcome to leave your trailer at my place. Same if you happen to be in an RV and want to camp here.

Eddy,

Fantastic! I’ve penciled in the date on the calendar. Not sure I’ll have the “soon to be viper green” ‘73 ready, but I have the Creamsicle as a backup. Will trailer, and would like to take you up on your offer for a place to park it.

For over 20 years Airhead Parts has sponsored a late July, 10 day, Volkswagen treffen down the West Coast from the Canadian to the Mexican boarder. I’ve participated twice on the southern segment, 2014 in a ‘72 Beetle and 2016 in a dirty “barn find” themed ‘73 914 - see photo. When I asked if I could join them in a 914, I was told, “if it’s air-cooled and has an engine in the back, or middle, you’re welcome.”

I just checked their website, and not surprisingly, they don’t have anything up yet, so I don’t have dates. If we could connect with them, it would be a “kick.”Attached Image

Avenue of the Giants is one of the finest roads I've ever driven. Part of the coastal run. You guys are going to have a great drive. Swell parkway north of Orick. If your SOs get bored, take a break and visit the Ladybird Johnson Grove. Walk in the giants. Good photo op at the Trees of Mystery parking lot.

One of these days Betty and I will make a WCR... but not this year.

It is 2,081 miles (32 hours) from home for us.

If y'all will hold it farther south, we would come.

Fantastic location! And so close to me. Nobody's mentioned Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, which, along with having some of the most awesome trees and scenery, great campsites... It's just a few miles away and well worth the visit.

If there is an all day event at the hotel, I'd like to attend and see all you folks I've not seen since the Medford WCR a few years back. Since last year I have been battling Guilain-Barre Syndrome, and still can't walk yet. But if I can talk the wife into driving, I'd love to see y'all, and your rides.

Sure hope that I have my 914-6 completed and can make WCR in Brookings, OR in July. It would be great to see everyone and meet some new "teeners."

I would want to caravan up with some others over the 2 day trip.

Thanks so much for all of your time to plan a great WCR in such a beautiful area!

The six 915 box has a clutch return spring on the pedals and an omega spring on the trans, so its super easy to push. It's like an on and off switch. So who knows...
What stage clutch are you running in your beast?

I'm really hoping to be able to attend so put me down at this time.

I just spoke to Jennifer and reserved a room. She had another call she was returning after my call regarding a room request. So if that person reserves 1 room she will
have 3 rooms left at this 914 WCR main hotel.

Will be great to see everybody and drive some awesome roads.

I should have my 914-6 engine rebuild / misc.work finished by then!
YEAH! cheer.gif

I will also have a 914 TFA pillow car door prize for a lucky WCR winner!

Thanks so much for all of your dedicated time to put on another WCR!

Tore out my car's steering and front suspension on Sunday for a much needed refresh. Goal it to get it back together and also fix some starting/running issues all within the next few months. If that happens, I'm in! However I'm not comfortable booking until it's back together and road tested. If Brookings is all booked out, then I might be stuck staying in Crescent City, but that's okay. Stay tuned.

Thank you! I've got everything I need for the suspension bits - just waiting on receiving the poly bronze bushings from ER and then I need to order the strut inserts. Have all new everything from MC/calipers/rotors/turbo tie rods/ball joints/etc etc, so it's mostly just going to be cleaning and refreshing in stages as I find time.

I might reach out to the community when it's time to fiddle with carb and other tuning stuff, as I'm hitting a bit of a wall there. headbang.gif

XXL on shirt. I plan to bring it yes. I just need to quit screwing around with golf carts. Brought back my early 914 days. Have 5 of them at my house. Just finished my first down to frame build. MY 914 rear trunk has its mechanics cover & is covered with mist parts tools. tongue.gif:!

Eddy,

I’m not going to be able to make the WCR. I was so looking forward to it. However, our second grandson is due a few days before this event and the wife says, “No.” The good news is our Son and daughter-in-law live on Oahu so it’ll be “off to Hawaii.”

I just canceled my King Room reservation at the Americoast Inn. So that’s now available.

Any excuse to bump this to the top and be sure folks get registered!

Here's something I'm noodling on for the awards, just in case you're interested:
- laser etched anodized aluminum

These are pieces to test the process, nail down a couple design elements and prove out the quality. They aren't to scale or layout but the final pieces should be pretty cool.

So get registered! You may already be a winner! first.gif smilie_pokal.gif

For me it will be about 2200 miles each way. I usually plan on 600 mile days because I am old and in the way. However, there are those who plan on longer trips to get to WCR. I plan to take the 3.2. I installed taller gears, but no heat, nor AC. I figure that when new, these cars made little of a transcontinental trip. Unless of course they broke down.

We will be driving from Seattle and hope to join as many activities as we can, but honestly not sure what days/times for arrival or departure yet.

Did you get my PayPal? I would like an extra shirt if possible. Can send more money.
Looking at the map (paper) it looks like one route would cross the desert in eastern Oregon. Going perhaps through Burns. I toured that region 50 years ago and wonder if it is wise for a person my age driving a car close to my age across fairly sparsely populated country. Any thoughts? The computers says I90 and then through the gorge. That has the appeal of 101.

Another bump. I assume if you're planning to come, you're already signed up but when is it ever a bad thing to further promote WCR? cheer.gif driving.gif

Anyway. Here's an unplanned give-away goodie.
Whenever it makes sense, I try to plan my cuts so nothing goes to waste.
In the case of the award silhouettes, I figured why not? So I trimmed down the "scrap" panel a bit and folded the edges.
The lucky winner could hang it as is or maybe paint up a multi-colored backer so each car was a different color.
Hey, it's a freebie so I'll tolerate no snarky comments. happy11.gif

I bought my wife and grown up kids a drone, but they won’t fly it. Getting close to time to stop working on the hell hole car and start sprucing up the 3.2. No heat, nor AC. But it does have a roof and two trunks, so I am psyched.

And for scale, those plaques are 4" x 6.5", the little one at the top is a luggage tag we did as practice.

See you in a month!

I've got a drone that I am definitely adding to the packing list after I charge it up and test it. It has been a while since that thing has seen any air time.

Just a little something to keep WCR at the top of everyone's minds.
Here's the final look of this year's awards. The plaque has folded edges around all four sides so you can hang it on a wall. The lower edge is tipped at ~30 degrees so it is all set to display on a desk or shelf, too.

Any bets as to who will win this one? @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=172 ? @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=626 ? @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=14076 ? Good thing @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=8624 isn't bringing his Suby-powered car - but maybe he is, now that he's seen this? idea.gif

Maybe there'll there be a surprise appearance of a car with this Ferrari engine installed? Wouldn't that be something... shades.gif

I guess we'll all find out soon!

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=172 - I don't know about that, but thanks for the kind words.
On having it there: I'm still waiting on the transmission. I understand the needed shim has arrived so fingers crossed they're able to wrap it up and ship it this week. Everything was working fine before I pulled the trans and the only other thing I did was swap out the clutch master so, in theory, it should only be a matter of getting the drive train back in, bleeding everything and I'll be good to do. Fingers crossed.
If I run into issues, there's always the E9!

Oh NO! I may have to cancel attending WCR because I have a hearing set on 7/21 on a home/garage we are in the process of getting approval to build. If I can't caravan up on 7/21 it may blow the trip for us.

Anyone planning to head up on Friday from the Bay Area we could meet up with? We would be coming from the Sacramento area.

Thanks,

A WCR without you, Bobby and your car? Say it ain't so!!! The only possible good news in this is that someone else now stands a chance of winning the "Best /6" or "Best Narrow Body" award! But I'd much rather have the Hartman contingent's participation in the event...

I just booked a room at AmeriCoast, so we won't be towing with & sleeping in my RV -- I'll use my Suburban to tow instead. It gets "better" mpg! The woman at the front desk said there's 3 rooms left...

Nancy and I also booked a room on Wednesday night at the Petaluma Motel 6. I hope to arrive in Pet-your-llama around 3PM.

Same here. I plan on returning the 1 & 101. May take 2-3 days but who cares. Lived here for 20 years and have never traversed the coast above San Fran. driving.gif driving.gif driving.gif

Also taking two days each direction from Tacoma. Crossing the Columbia at Longview, and making our way down to meet up with 101 at Tillamook. Basically same in reverse going north.

Did a nice 300 mile drive yesterday in the '75 without skipping a beat. Looking forward to getting down to the coast next week!

I have been procrastinating on this update and am super bummed that I will not be making WCR this year. Things have been really busy recently as my partner and I are both in the the process of selling our houses and buying a place together. I have to be out of my crib at the end of July so need the time to deal with the massive garage footprint accumulated over the last 13 years. I hope everyone has a great time in Brookings! Will be attending Chris’ Petaluma get together next Wednesday and am looking forward to seeing those who are also coming.

Posted by: rhodyguy Jul 14 2022, 11:46 AM

John, as you're on the scenic route and not in a big hurry, take 126 at Eugene, head east, catch 242/20 to Bend. To Portland, and potential trffic, and I-84(speed trap) the drive will not be as much fun.

I would like the beouf sil vous plait. My wife is going to catch up with me after the event, so she will not be dining.

I have started the drive. Monsieur SB914 has been kind enough not to mention the phone call we had this morning in which it became apparent that I was planning on arriving a week too late. Had to drive to where I work on my car, change the oil and pack ASAP.
So, I did. Got going about 3 pm and am now in S central Minnesota. They say it is the pork capital of the USA, and if I come back on a Wednesday I can have a bacon 'smore.

My departure from Madison was somewhat like the movies with the sirens and dive dive dive. But I have started. Expect 105° in Rapid City. Fortunately I know of a lonely hotel with a subway sandwhich shop and it's own distillery part way there if my spirit says bed and AC even though it is only 2 pm. Done it before.

Good luck on the names.

Concours weenies? I thought it was either chicken or beef confused24.gif .
But I sure do wanna see the beast after you have posted at least a dozen photos of your approach. What does it look like in person and how long before something is upgraded? It should be the hit of the season.

Today saw me driving through S Dakota at 108° weather. Man and machine were tested. I am now in Gillette Wy. Turns out it is highschool rodeo week and all of the motels are full at 3 pm on Monday. Found a place where the nice lady said she might have a room if I would wait. Person ahead of me says he doesn't want to pay full price because of "what happened last night". He leaves and the lady asks me if I still wanted to check in. I said yes, was given the key to someone elses room, tried to get ice and dropped backpack with laptop - this laptop- and a can of high temp pressurized soda pop. Squirt. Fortunatwly, the place in Kadoka makes very good whiskey.

Montana tomorrow! Movin to Montana soon...

After yesterday and 208° I virtuously got started from Gillette at 6:30. And after returning for a forgotten item almost 150 miles got started again at 10:00 am. So much for virtue. Nice day here in the Rockies. How I miss the mountains. Sometimes my 914 was the only car in sight on I-90.

Butte MT
tomorrow I am hoping for Oregon. There is a town near where I live called Oregon WI. Having grown up in Seattle I cringe when I hear them pronounce the name. Oh, hey dere Mr, it isn't supposed to sound like that don't cha know. Never mind when they talk about Yakima bike racks. Haven't run Sequim past anyone lately.

My dad and I will be leaving from Martinez Thursday likely around 8 or 8:30. He's taking our Chinook Camper and I'm taking my 914 in a "mini caravan".

I've seen at least 2 other 914's in the area - never while driving mine though. One was a track car -6 conversion at a mechanic's and the other was a (Guards?) red with appearance group and side decals. Maybe someone on the forum?

Due to a bunch of nonsense that came up over the last week I am running late… will be leaving Seattle Friday before noon. Doing once over now!

Looking forward to meeting you all soon.

Haha, yes that was epic. Although I have ethical issues with someone buying something new with the full intention of only using once and returning it. If he would have rented the welder, that would have been 100% awesome.
