Well the 1.7 is barely running. Back in January we took it to a mechanic who ended up pretty much screwing up the engine. It turned out to be a real bum deal and we lost some money on it, and got the car back running worse than before. After having it properly fixed by another mechanic, he told us it wouldn't be lasting too long.
Well my parents offered me a great deal. They're willing to pay for a new engine as long as I get a job and slowly pay them back. Of course I want to take full advantage of a great opporitunity. My dad told me to just get the engine I want to get, since we're going through all the trouble.
Well I'm thinking 2270 or 2056. Has anyone had experience buying from type4parts.com? Or know anything else? What carburetors would be best? Also, will I be needing a different exhaust for the larger engine ?I'll probably have a local VW mechanic assemble it together. Just looking for a heads up on what I'm getting into, I have really no idea. Had a long fun chat with a second cousin who used to be a Porsche mechanic, and he told me to ask around here first..Thanks ahead everyone..

The "heads up on what you're getting into" kinda depends on whether you deal with
type4parts.com you apparently will be getting into a world of hurt, as we say in the trade. Their reputation is lower than even Motor Meister, and THAT"S low. Right down there with GEX and Bernie Bergman. Plan on spending a bit, because 1.7 parts are getting REALLY scarce. Good quality core cylinder heads are around 500 bucks apiece, and quality pistons and cylinders are NLA from almost everywhere that sells parts. Is your engine FI, or do you have carbs? A PM follows. www.type4STORE.com is the good one (thats jake raby's site).

One of his kits might be good for you. It comes with a video so you can put it together yourself and not have to pay one of those overpriced VW mechanics

As far as displacement, 2056 or 2270 is pretty safe depending on what your budget will allow.

there is a proven, running 2270 in the classifieds right now...$3K which is a lot of money, but it might be cheaper than what your mechanic might charge to build a motor from scratch....

I say stick with FI, and go laptop programmable...(megasquirt), build the kit and I can help you tune it....

That deal on Perso's engine is SWEET!

As for the best place for your parts- its right below in my signature.... A 15 year old can assemble on of my kits- its that easy........ I have taken ALL the guesswork away!

Is Perso's engine a true RAT engine? Or just built from some (all?) of your parts, like an early kit.

Tom was one of the original members of the STF back in 2000..... Back then I was doing EVERYTHING I could to get people to try the combos I had worked out, including giving away information that would have loved to grab...

I sold Tom a few parts, but that was back when i didn't sell parts retail, so it wasn't much... Tom and I became friends and I gave him some help along the way- its not my engine, nor is it a kity, but it was *close* to being a kit..

For the 2270 in the classifieds, it says stock exhaust won't cut it.. What are the options there?

Nope- stock exhaust will KILL this engine, or any other like it..

2.0 SS heater boxes work OK with a decent Bursch muffler..

The ultimate is the Tangerine Super Header- I require it for my builds that are only 1 level above this 2270 in tune.

The Kerry Hunter system also works ok.
