914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Can these longs be saved?

I cut the right side long out of my rust bucket parts car. The first picture is of the top of the long. You're thinking OK, maybe not too bad...

Than I turn it 90 degrees on it's side. Getting worse...

And finally the bottom. Or this should be the bottom if it had a bottom.

This is known on Ebay as " minor rust in all the typical places"

That paper heater hose really doesn't add much to the strength of the car.

The floor was sorta gone too. 15 years sitting in the grass.

You West Coast boys don't realize how good you got it.

Paul, that spray can insulating foam would have filled those inner rocker panel rust holes nicely. LOL. I've seen a 914 where someone actually did that.

Why did Porsche/VW use a paper tube for the heater duct in the first place? Why did they not simply use a continuous steel tube? Is there any reason to not use a steel tube if you were to open the longs for repairs or dipping? Just wondering... idea.gif

I believe it functions as a type of muffler so you don't get all that engine noise sent into the cabin.
