It took 12 years to start making headway with this project, but the past 18 months have progressed well. I bought this car in June 2010 and it sat in the shop for a long time, but parts accumulation continued, even while I completed two other restorations.
Anyway, thanks to some skilled people and plenty of ransom payments, it's closer than it has been in nearly 30 years to being a car again.
This 1970 914/6 #914 043 1396 (Prod Nr. 130 1505, Engine Nr. 640 4878) was sold in California on April 15, 1970. Somewhere in it's early life it was given correct flares and some GT mods; old ads for the car specified remote oil cooler, lightweight lids, etc.
It was suggested by it's last two sellers (one in Autoweek circa 1984, the other in 2007 on eBay) that it has some race history. It's clear the old girl was rode hard and put away wet, but aside from maybe autocross, I think competition claims were dubious.
A few posts here for clarification: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=74301&st=80
Thanks to Gustl for reinforcing the abbreviated history I got from KJ, who sold the car to me after scavenging what he could from it. No complaints, it was a very cheap roller AND it's a real 6. So why not get the right stuff and build a GT?
Here's what it looked like forever........... and when I got it. Photo is from the eBay ad 15 years ago (!)
So like I said, nothing happened except parts buying, which was another adventure. But last year, the ugly began. Doesn't look too bad prior to stripping...
It's the early '70s... braze that shit! The patchwork repairs really makes you wonder what happened to this thing?
Given the amount of weathering and stress these little cars undertake over decades, doesn't look that bad to me.
It'll suck to redo all that brazing. Gotta admit, back in the 70's, probably nobody that "built" this 914 thought it was going to be around in 2022.
Hope to see lots of pictures of this project, looks cool!
Thanks for the moral support. Didn't look that bad to me either, but it was... right side was rotten.
So odd. Rust in places that made sense, in others that you'd think were dry.
Pans looked decent before stripping, but were perforated all the way around. Restoration Design to the rescue.
Same with the trunk floor... and it along with the taillight panel had apparently already been replaced at some point, the number was missing.
Sweet!
So happy to see a build of this stature going on in FLA. Progress looks amazing.
Where in Florida are you? Hope to see your GT in the future.
Best of luck with the project!
Cheers,
Sean
Great project, will follow it !
Keep us updated !
Antoine
Pans, inner and outer longs, LS targa bar base, vents, pedal box, frunk & trunk floors... a LOT of steel. But that was the worst of it, and by January 2022 it started to look like a car again.
Cockpit floor completed, seat perches for the Scheels and handbrake relocation up soon.
The shop's fabrication skills are exceptional... asked for a simple cover similar to factory GT's and they produced this Satanic detail:
Test fitment: like buttah! Yes, that is a real-deal NOS GT tank. I sold a kidney.
Wow! Ask for pics and wish granted! Very awesome progress!
I sometimes wonder if some rust in odd places is due to a lot of car-washing? Spraying to clear off soap at angles normal driving doesn't produce?
As of yesterday, determined seat locations with the bar installed. Some adjustments to do... also fitted the manual headlight kit from Mittlemotor. Cables are too short! Grrrr.
On the kit I saw, the cables were bicycle cables and housing. If so, go to a bike shop and get some high quality teflon lined housing. It's worth the money over the cheap replacement stuff.
I know you have a couple really nice cars so I'll be sure to follow this build.
It keeps getting better
Antoine
Thanks Antoine... to answer an earlier question, I'm in WPB.
Cheers Mark, but the buttons on the ends of the cables are really small. Have asked the kind folks at 914 Rubber to check with the supplier and hope they can solve it.
The cables are nearly a foot short, kinda hard to imagine that sort of quality control fuck up.
EDIT: Just looked at a half-dozen cable makes and MAYBE Shimano ends will fit. Fingers crossed for a simple solution.
Your roll bar looks way too short - too close to the helmet in tech inspection.
See this: https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/113481744
This will still fit under the targa top
Check the end of a derailleur cable.
Attached image(s)
No worries. The bar is an exact reproduction of the factory piece fabricated by one of the best-known Porsche race car restorers in the world (who sold me the car in the first place).
I'm building an accurate replica, not a track car so we're not concerned with the current rule book. It will be a streetable GT for rallye use mainly.
Biggest difference from a period GT is the engine; I'm using a twin-plug 2.8 RS motor with Webers.
This project looks delicious. Love the details your putting in. The fuel tank is mind blowing. I remember seeing one for sale and thought …hmmm maybe. But the structural changes involved were beyond my skill set, never mind the cost of the tank!
Looks great. This will be one to see in person! Amelia?? Perhaps.
Thanks Dion, hope to bring it to Amelia sooner or later... and do a few road events. Couple of fun ones in Florida, also think this car would be great for Highlands. Taking our '67S this year.
So you'd think the bike cable sizes would work, but the smallest barrel available is 4.5mm dia x 5mm long. Some fiddly filing is in my near future: they need to be 3.8mm dia x 4mm.
A few more detail shots of the oil line cockpit routing.
How about some brake porn? NOS vented GT rears plus calipers... lucky to get them and the 908s. Thanks Bernie!
OMG!
908’s!!! LeMans here we come. Quick change time, That is sweet!
Try Comet Kart Sales for cables
We used to have to smooth out the ends sometimes if they had a bit of flashing on them. A bench grinder does it in seconds. I would see if you can enlarge the hole to 4.5 so in the future, any derailleur cable will fit. Then keep an extra pair in the toolkit.
Thanks to the fine folks at 914 Rubber for contacting Mittlemotor about the cables: longer ones are on the way. You're right Mark, filing the bike barrels to size was easy, so now we have a bunch of spares.
More progress this week: engine access cut, handbrake relocation and driver's seat rails complete, body got mud and some finish sanding, and just for fun the engine grill was dropped into place.
The next 4-6 weeks will be little stuff like harness brackets, auxiliary lighting mounts and paint prep. Moving along nicely.
As we say in SoCal DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!
Amazing build and only 2 pages deep, holy cow
Oh my….well done
Slower pace of work this summer, but now much closer to paint. Final fitment of all panels and mucho blocking time... color cards sprayed and approved. Next post it'll be orange again.
Goodness gracious !
So good to see the process ......and the parts !!! WOW !
Beautiful.
The 'GT' World is watching.....and growing.
Great work
Rory
Ok good to hear and for sure safety took a back seat (pun intended) to speed back then.
Seams sealed, underside schutzed and painted, hood pins fitted. They'll probably cut the fuel filler today. Very close to final paint, and finally back to Klub Sport for assembly.
Russ, the work is awesome and the car...well, just WOW!!!
I am doing a center mount brake set up as well. Could you possibly post some pics of what you have done to your car? I was looking at a more elevated set up but yours looks really clean.
Regards,
Grant
wow. Just amazing. well done.
looks really nice. I see one of my oil line covers in the picture
Indeed you do, Ben... nice piece! Using your hard lines as well.
Grant, I'll take a few detail pics of the handbrake with dimensions. Or you can go to Armando's site for that and much more. He's devoted a huge amount of time and energy covering all the nuanced details of both factory and privateer GT builds.
He's the GT guru and deserves props.
https://pbase.com/9146gt/root
More paint done... lots of details to address. Underside, cockpit, engine compartment and trunks are all single stage. It's hard to get even color when cutting and buffing final, so the exterior will be two stage. Very close to reassembly time.
The old foam in the tank was dust, so it was boiled out and refinished. Haven't stuffed the new foam in yet but should be fun.
[attachmentid=858784]
Very very nice build. Looking forward to seeing assembly.
Very cool Russ, thanks for sharing. Mark
Wow!
Great work on your car. Its so nice to see work at this level.
Best Bob B
Paint is finished, the resto shop will bolt the doors and lids on next week and we'll start assembly soon after. Glad I didn't change the color much as I thought about it, really digging the classic safety orange after all.
We probably won't get the FG engine tin from F-S-H in Germany until late January, so if it's completed by March it will be a miracle. Interior details are gonna be fun!
WOW, that looks amazing! Don't rush the reassembly.
Beautiful paint!
Panel fit and paint is near perfection... these guys do exceptional work.
Used the same "D" handle for the lights as for the engine lid. Cheap and easier than adapting the hood release part.
Impressive!
That is fantastic!
5 weeks till Amelia Island.
Great progress. The car looks fantastic!
Here is your car in May 1996 at the Hot Springs AR - 914 MUSR
@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9003 was the owner as I recall
there are more pictures in http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=478&
Wow!! Thanks for that, Glenn... looks fantastic, loved, and he clearly drove it! Gotta wonder how on earth did it fall so low?!?
Very nicely done.
So cool to have all this personal history provided by a previous steward of this car! Thanks for filling in a substantial period and especially the photos, it's a pleasure to time travel a bit.
I’m watching Bernie Buschen restore his GT in time for Rennsport and it’s interesting how similar your two cars are - down to the tank and cable pull headlights. Like you he’s got some real unobtanium bits and likely also a 2.8 twin plug RSR with slide valves.
Who will finish first?
Three more pics down memory lane....So glad to see the factory six getting a proper update!!!
Taken not long after I bought it.
I put some Fuchs on it and Supertrap exhaust.
At Hallett, Ok with Ronal 3 piece wheels.
The Ronals ... Thanks for those, JT!
Making progress, harness is in, suspension is on, and while waiting for some parts restored the wiper system and started on the defrost/blower. Also fabbed up the fuel gauge binnacle which came out pretty nice. 60mm exhaust pipe cut on a 30 degree angle, tacked on a couple of washers as mounting points and sprayed with a little bed-liner paint.
[attachmentid=876551]
That fuel gage looks perfect! Nice fab work.
Not digging the fresh air / defrost job at all. I have two complete sets in the stash, and MAYBE half is usable because of cracks and broken tabs. The good airbox has overspray that won't come off, so semi-gloss black rattlecan is gonna happen.
At least the blower motor is available.
Bought an engine board without knowing that I had one already, so cleaned, tested and sealed the pair. One might be for sale in the near future.
Engine is 2.8 twin-plug with S internals and cams, 46mm Italian Webers backed by an LSD 901 transaxle. All fresh, carbs rebuilt and dressed with new FG tin... looking very nice.
Looks outstanding
Where did you find those velocity stack covers?
Thanks!
Got the dash covered and the fuel gage mount installed... will cut out holes for switches and controls as needed. The fuel gage mount came out very tidy.
Also got the cooler and shroud installed... unfortunately, we didn't fit the fog lights + grills when the bumper was, so quite a bit of trimming is in the works. Stupid oversight. Thankfully, the horns WERE fitted, so no issue there. Pics to come.
Hey Mark, got it from FSH in Germany along with the engine fiberglass. Gotta paint them black and not cheap, but the fit is good.
https://www.f-s-h.com/Oil-cooler-pit-grille-for-914-6-GT
That's a pretty penny!
To paraphrase somebody, “long after you have forgotten the price, you remember the quality”. So true.
Yes and definitely my philosophy as well but man 500 euros.
Love this build though. For sure it is sweet.
@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=15610 - my link has €365, where do you see €500?
You get what you pay for but yeah, it's a bit eye-watering... his prices have gone up a little. A year ago I rationalized paying €350 for the cooler grill by also getting the FG engine shroud that was substantially cheaper than Patrick Motorsports. Now NLA.
BTW, for some parts Rose Passion was way less expensive than stateside sources. CDI boxes and coils in particular. It also helped that when I ordered most of this stuff the Euro was at par with the Dollar. Timing!
When I clicked the link that was the number I got
Nice progress
Other good off the shelf option is Mittlemotor (steel), still spendy, but what is your time worth or metal dude cost per hour?
https://www.mittelmotor.de/racing/de/914-6-zubehoer/478/5411/0-08-914-6-gt-teile/0-081/2-0-08124-neu-detail
I think Volker at FSH sells his stuff to Mittelmotor, or at least they come from the same producer.
Thank you for taking the time to document your build, I am really enjoying it! The workmanship is beautiful and I love choices you have made along the way. Can't wait to see the finished product!
As a former owner of that chassis I'm loving what you're doing to restore this original six.....the finished product will be awesome!!!
A little more done on the dash wiring, wiper system in, blower/defrost is next.
After trying all year to secure a set of Michelin TB15s for 7s & 8s, I gave up and waited just 7 months for some Pirelli CN36s. I have these on my '67 S and love them, they'll do fine here.
Mr. Weidman anodized these in his signature RSR finish, no painted petals. Thinking of just the valve petals in a small flag of color... or maybe the lug end. Suggestions appreciated!
I have a line on a spare set of 8s & 9s, hopefully the Michies will be available at some point.
Car coming together really nicely, in typical Russ fashion. That interior is a stunner. Now I am curious—were the insets under the door cards done that way on some or all cars?
Wheels definitely want for something…I'd do the dayglo red at the least, clear anodized petals to match the lips with RSR finish as you have it at most…but I know that's a hassle. ONS / "Recaro" 914-6 GT shows the way...
Exactly Pete @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=2058 . Like the ONS/Recaro fire car, or Larousse/Perramond #0141 which both painted the flags red. What about green or safety yellow?
What's odd is why they DIDN'T paint the petal facing the valve. Never really noticed that until now. I will paint the flags on the valve petal, safety yellow is likely...
The guys from Klub Sport have returned from RRVII, and reassembly is slowly resuming. I painted the wheels as described above, got the ignition boxes installed and tomorrow will drill the handbrake holes. Details on that modification to come when the cables get here.
Bruce has the motor ready for install, but we hit a snag on the transaxle: DAPO someone drilled out the speedometer drive.
That is a pretty motor. Your car is coming along very nicely.
Did the insulation today... combination of one layer of Dynamat covered by Siless Liner, a closed cell foam sound and heat barrier. Doubled up, hoping for a tolerable cabin.
Also test fitment of the Perlon that didn't inspire confidence. I don't want to fuck it up so will likely bring in a pro to do it.
Nice build, a whole lot of nice touches. Speaking of touches on the second page I noticed a between the seats e-brake handle. I didn’t seem to find anything about the install. Any chance you could enlighten us? That’s kind of cool
Wow!!! You're a truly gifted artist!!!
Fantastic build, with so much cool details..love this project !
Antoine
Wow. Hell of a build!
Pair of Proper 1.625" competition 9146gt exhaust headers coming your way
I will agree those headers are amazing, I have them and they make a ton of power .
Marty equipped my car as well. Very well done.
Thanks Marty!
Thank you @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=2922 @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=15610 @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=11875 & many others for representing the World of exhaust scavenging with our brand !
Marty + the MSDS crew
Last QC check is the cylinder head fit / fine tuning the fitment with thermal adjustments if necessary
How's the build going??? Curious minds (and former owner) want to know!!!
It had many autocross and track days while I had it. Update please.....
Sorry for the delay... this went on the back burner for awhile, as my wife got really sick with something called Polymyositis. Sucked for several months, but her treatment is going well enough that we're planning to do some car events and maybe a rally in Colorado next spring.
Anyway, the oil lines were slow going but thanks to the expertise of Brad @911Rennen and Marty's generosity, they are finally finished. Also completed the handbrake, solved the adjustment issue with a simple plate... they work perfectly.
So, engine and transmission are in, we might actually finish this thing before the end of the year.
Handbrake cables location, simple solution that works great.
So what is the engine? It’s pretty!
Charlie
Absolutely beautiful. Would love to hear to fire up.
Looks & will sound Great ! probably not dB friendly at Laguna Seca
Ever hear the phrase “Don’t hate me because I am beautiful “? Certainly applies to everything that you have shown us. So very great!
Nice build..
You may want to let the shop know that the trans cup washers are installed upside down.
Attached image(s)
This is quite an inspirational GT build. This especially true for me as I move forward on my own GT conversion project. I love the attention to detail and correct historical accuracy.
More detail of handbrake install. Thought we may have to modify 911 cables, but stock ones fit perfectly. This mod was way easier than anticipated, mounting plate for adjustment and a small bracket to keep the cables away from the headers.
Will also be wrapped with heat barrier.
Very nicely done.
Hmmm. Trying to post a vid of the first start... will figure it out.
https://www.facebook.com/reel/937290291669898
Havent been to the site in a while, my M471 Six has been in storage for the last three years waiting for us to build a garage.
Your build is extremely inspiring !
Beauty!
Very nice!
I got back on to check your progress. Very nice and what a factory six deserves!!! Proud to see what you have done to my former car. Keep up the good work and enjoy it as much as I did!!!
You’re crushing it. Really well done.
Simply awesome & beautiful!
Getting close. Off to the trimmer for interior and exterior finishing touches. Afterwards, final tune and shakedown, can't wait to hit the country roads around Highlands NC this June.
Beautiful!
Just stunning! I am a few weeks behind you on mine.
Beauty! I am a few years behind you on mine! :-D
