Please let it be better than 81/83 (and Detroit and Dallas '84). Those were awful.

Though I do have a photo somewhere of Mansell trying to push his car across the line...what a bonkers weekend.

I'm not excited for F1 period. MotoGP is where the real racing action is. But on the Vegas race specifically, I thought that was announced for 2023?

Posted by: FL000 Apr 1 2022, 07:13 AM

Sounds like a fun weekend - I’m hoping to be there. driving.gif

Disaster at turn one

I am hoping to attend. This is for next season 2023. This will be awesome! Vamos!

I love F1 but was was highly disappointed with their ruling handed down for the "Rain Delayed Race". Complete and utter Bull Shit. Crooked as a dogs hind leg. ar15.gif I'll still probably make the Austin and/or Vegas race. biggrin.gif

I worked corners for the Dallas F1 race. I was about 20 feet from Mansell as he was pushing the car.

I don't think this was ever in any of the pictures, but I can remember his crew lined up with their toes touching the line waiting for him to push the car across the finish line. They couldn't help until he actually crossed the line because it would disqualify him. The second the car nose crossed the line, it was like a bunch of racehorses coming out of the gate.

You and I must have been shoulder-to-shoulder. I was a spectator but had an all-access pass because of some forgotten reason related to SCCA (CanAm?)

Did you ever work San Antonio for the GTP cars? I was F&C/spotter/"corner driver" for them*.

Small world!

GA

*Which allows me to slip in one of my fav stories about that time I drove the Momo Porsche 962 (wait, wut?)

For the weekend, IMSA put SCCA National-licensed drivers as F&C on each corner, in case a car had to be flat-towed. Well, wouldn't you know it, Gianpero Moretti parks the red 962 in our corner and walks away...and I could not wait until the race was over. Race is done, I jump in the car and drive it all the way around the track behind the tow vehicle, giving teh queen wave to all my F&C buddies.

We arrived at the paddock (inside the convention center, cool) and I didn't want to get out...until a gruff Italian implied that we could do this the easy way or the hard way...I fit real nice in there, too.

Personally, while I am glad they are bringing more races to the US, I am going to watch this one on TV. The track layout reminds me of LeMans before the chicanes on the Mullsanne straight. The focus will be on top speed, with very little chance of overtakes. So it is going to be a series of drag races down the straights.

And DRS is going to be a real advantage with this being all long straights with a few corners. Imagine coming out of turn 9 and getting DRS. You would have a HUGE advantage by the time you reach turn 11.

Just my $.02

Hey John where's the best place to stay and have a street view ?

The Flamingo would be my first choice if I wanted to watch the race from a hotel room.

They have the most rooms with a good Strip view, plus all the others are set back with fountains, volcanos and shopping having Strip frontage.
Also, the other properties have their towers at an angle to Las Vegas Blvd.

The Cosmopolitan, Palazzo and Treasure Island should also provide a good view of the action from some of their suites.

I flagged at Lemans in 1989, the last year before the chicanes. I ended up as part of a mixed French-British-Canadian-American team at the Mulsanne kink. Seeing the big Group C cars go by on the other side of the armco at 230 mph was pretty exciting.

china (shanghai) cancelled too.....vid closed borders. gone for good from there?.

vegas gp will be a night one? neon backdrop too good not to use.
looks like its a real drag strip layout. park yourself at the end of one of those clinically insane straights and watch em hit the brakes. beerchug.gif those things can stop. most violent thing they do.

i just used to go to the qualifying session in melbourne. better than the race.
no crowd. (watch the race on tv). had schumacher stand in front of me when he crawled through the fence after a real big one trying too hard. for some reason i always thought of him as a big guy. he is tiny. a guy holding a piece of his wing with blood coming out of his forehead got it autographed. the crowd got a bit of a carbon shower.

stopped going after the turbo hybrid cars came in. spectacle trackside is not quite the same.

Thinking about attending Vegas F1 2023. Anybody have any info on best hotel to see the race from, suite prices for the race, etc.?

My thought is to get a suite with some friends on a higher floor to view the race in comfort and maybe get a couple of general admission tickets.

Remember. This is Vega$.
To get one of the prime suites you will need an upper level players card, a casino host, an established line of credit and minimum play requirements.

The Palazzo, Cosmopolitan, Treasure Island and Flamingo will offer the best views.

I got my pre-approval to be a marshal this morning. Exciting in a way, but not expecting the customary free GA ticket for family or friend, and there are no support races.

The schedule is 5pm to 2am Thurs and Friday, and 5pm to 1am Saturday night (race).

Average temperature that time of year is mid forties to mid sixties, so it will be interesting keeping slicks warm after the sun goes down! The very long straight (212mph) will make it even tougher.

There is a neato youtube video with Townsend Bell driving it on a simulator.

Even if cost was the only factor, (it’s not) the best rooms will cost a true fortune. Try getting an off strip room during SEMA or some other big convention, what was a $70 a night room last week will be $500 a night or more. If the show is right outside? The best rooms for viewing will be thousands. I suspect there will even be a secondary market for rooms like this.

Your best bet to accomplish this goal was to have reserved a room before this was announced.

This pic comes from an email I get from the MGM group of hotels…

Just over a week to go and I am getting even more excited. Today I received my work assignment. I will be flagging at Turn 11, the end of the high speed Strip straight. This heavy breaking zone should have lots of action and might be the best passing area on the entire circuit.

Posted by: Nogoodwithusernames Nov 6 2023, 01:15 PM

Color me jealous!

I got to attend one F1 race at the Sonoma raceway probably almost a decade ago now. Another business in our complex had some extra general admission tickets they gave us. That was a pretty awesome day, I just remember when the main event was over they did some other races with Maseratis (don't remember what class or anything). Boy they all sure seemed slow after the F1 cars!

Posted by: Big Len Nov 6 2023, 01:22 PM

Where do you think much of the passing will be?

Posted by: GregAmy Nov 6 2023, 01:26 PM

Cost-effective tickets are unobtanium. All general aviation airplanes are being charged a $3000 landing fee, even Cessnas (I don't know if that includes tie-downs). I'm told just getting into a casino this week/end may require having Taylor Swift on your arm.

I'll watch the spectacle for free from my commando-chair. With beer. I'll look for someone sporting a 914 t-shirt!

GA

P.S., I' m quite salty about this event, but certainly not surprised at all this. Miami led us this way and I figured Vegas could be worse; it is. This, from someone who's been attending F1 races for many decades (Dallas 1984 was my first one, I watch Mansell push his car across the line 150 yards away. Honestly, the Can AM races were more exciting, love those big 'Merican0engined monsters...)

Montreal is a good venue, if you have seats. GA is the sux, as you can't see much along the track from ground level.

We did all eight Indy F1 races, which cost us about $300/yr for four seats - yup, four - at the top of the grandstands right at Turn One (with a Jumbotron) and that included Fri-Sat general admission (all seats at the venue were GA on Fri-Sat, including those all along the front straight, you could walk in and grab any seat you want/ and/or move around the excellent viewing berms).

F1 ain't for the masses any more. Hell, maybe it wasn't ever...

My drone will be banned from the sky

Posted by: Spoke Nov 6 2023, 04:47 PM

Hope it's a good race. I was going to DVR it but I already have the video.

Max will be fastest in FP1, FP2, and FP3. He'll take pole position and Ferrari will find a way to ruin the race for both of their drivers.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Nov 6 2023, 05:16 PM

I was a corner worker at the F1 race at Fair Park in Dallas in 1984.

I was maybe 30 yards from Nigel Mansell while he tried to push his car over the finish line in over 100 degree heat. The mechanics from his team were within a few feet of him, and couldn't help for fear of disqualifying him.

Keke Rosberg won the race. Mansell was credited with sixth.

I know it gets you in free, but you won't be able to watch much of the race from a corner worker station. Just lots of standing around waiting, and then watching the cars go by during the race.

I got lucky and worked a corner near start finish, so I got to see a little more. If you are on the back side of the track, its going to be a long, hot day for you.

but i don't wish to detract from the thread of the spectacle of F1 at vegas.
suspect that @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=481 is really going to enjoy himself.

At least you don't have to worry about Major Spin (Mazepin). I swear he could crash a wheelchair while sitting still.

Let's not forget the King, Andrea De Crasheris, errr De Ceasaris. I believe it was Guy Ligier (Team Ligier) that fired him on the spot after Andrea walked back to the pits after a rollover crash, stating "I can no longer afford to employ this man".

Then there was Crashtor...err Pastor Maldonado...didn't he have his own website, something like "where did Pastor crash today..."?

Here is a list of F1's greatest crash kings.

And You forgot "Hunt the Shunt"

Here's a different list, with videos: https://www.goodwood.com/grr/f1/the-five-most-accident-prone-f1-drivers/

i'd be almost tempted to put money down on stroll for fastest lap.
good odds and he would either do it or smear the walls with himself.
have to wait for practice to see if that a m has speed at the l v track.
depends how they have it set up but it can be a fast car and stroll has been fast in it.

but truthfully - i'd be thinking there is a good chance that norris might take that prize.

Safety car lap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6QkCPhJ6Fw

I am highly unimpressed. It reminds me so much of the old WW2 airport circuits in Texas/Oklahoma that we were forced to race on in the 80s, because we had nothing else; a string of long straights with turns necessary to get the cars back to the start/finish line -- plus immovable walls

I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect this will be an unending series of yellows, blacks, and maybe some reds...

Posted by: rhodyguy Nov 16 2023, 07:59 PM

Not just Marshals either. ‘Intervention’ Marshals. What are one of those? Plenty of them.

Did they ever get FP1 and FP2 going? I DVR'ed FP1 but only saw Sainz's Ferrari hit a water access cap and damage his car. I read that he would be penalized 10 grid spots to change the chassis and other damaged pieces.

Posted by: JmuRiz Nov 17 2023, 08:36 AM

Great start to the weekend eh? Them giving him a penalty for unsafe track condition accident is very dumb.

Posted by: GregAmy Nov 17 2023, 09:09 AM

Clown shoes.

- Track not properly prepared
- Cars damaged as a reuslt, have to replace chassis and sub-components
- Damaged Ferrari given 10-place grid penalty because of a battery replacement due to that damage, no wiggle room offered
- FP2 delayed 2-1/2 hours
- Yet despite many waiting, all spectators removed from all stands due to "security teams shifts ending" (and, I strongly suspect, due to the requirement to open up the roads immediately after end of FP2)
- Martin's comment, paraphrased, "it's like a lock-down race".

This reminds me a lot of the 2005 Indy debacle. Michelin made it right for us spectators with refunds/discounts, I hope Liberty is calling in their check writers (and ticket dispensers) to make their Thursday evening ticket holders whole.

Top tip. Tack weld manhole covers down. That’s what was done when Tacoma hosted a street circuit for Winston Cup cars in the mid 80s. Everyone one wearing puffy jackets and warm hats for the Vegas night race…only in America.

Orange is the new black!

Actually, "the new white" (flaggers tradtionally wear all-white).

I will offer that, despite my initial concerns, the track looks like it'll race better than I thought it would. It's still an "airport circuit" but there's some interesting corners and braking areas that will offer some viewing excitment.

And I've already seen a couple friends on TV; the marshall in black and the helmet with the Texas outline that was shoo-ing away the camera from Sainz' car is an SCCA friend. She must be sleeping now as I can't seem to get a rise out of her via text...lol - GA

Posted by: technicalninja Nov 17 2023, 09:59 AM

Welding the manhole covers is OLD, OLD, school.

Every time a President visits your town every single manhole cover on his route is welded shut.
Makes it a BITCH for the telephone techs to fix stuff in the future...

The manhole covers cover more telecommunication stuff than anything else.

This sounds exactly like Dallas in 1984. The track was breaking apart, and the event organizers cancelled the warmup to fix it.

What's the difference between a Marshall Post and an Intervention Post ?

To the best of my understanding. . .
There are many kinds of Marshall's. (Flagging, Intervention, Boundary, Radio, Light Pannel, Grid, Pit and more)
that might be asigned to a station. Their only access could be a window in the fence.
An Intervention Post will usually have a break in the wall with access to push or for the lift to remove disabled cars.
It really has to do with the responsibilities of the different specialties.

i like the idea the cars might lack mechanical grip due to temps.
we get to find out who has the touch with their foot on the pedal?

so long as the walls don't cause repetitive interruptive carnage it could be interesting.

the run into the first corner after the start might be like nothing else this season.

----

in a funny way the track reminds me of adelaide. which had a long long back straight where the turbo cars wound out (........and then they had to stop them for the sharp right hander). also were lots of tight 90 degree corners. and it was bumpy.

however the treatment of fans in the stands during FP2 was inexcusable.

I'm amazed that lid came up for a couple of reasons. They're heavy cast iron and if you've ever removed one you know the tolerance between the sleeve and lid is quite tight. You need to work thin screwdrivers on each side of the lid a mm at a time until you can grasp the top of the lid. Vacuum? confused24.gif

Yes. Every city race ends up having this problem.
Same thing happened in Baltimore when they were running the ALMS and Indy races there, before the dark times came.

All the downforce these cars generate sucking them to the ground equates to lifting force on the ground. In Baltimore the ALMS and Indy cars were lifting full size manhole covers out of the ground - those things are HEAVY cast iron and in some cases were rusted in place for decades. Popped 'em out all over the course. 10 years later you can still see the tack welds placed on those covers to keep them in the road.
