914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Tranny Clinic... Abbotsford BC, next spring

Posted by: pete-stevers Jul 14 2022, 08:24 AM

I have spoken with Dr Evil and would like to have a transmission clinic here at our barn in mid to late Spring next year. piratenanner.gif Wed have plenty of room for camping. beerchug.gif Costs have not been discussed as of yet....
I would like to see who would like to participate.

There was talk of a Montreal clinic in July -- not sure if that went anywhere, but I can't attend just due to the timing.

I've been trying to get out to B.C. for years (decades?) but still haven't made it. This might be a great opportunity, but I'd likely have to source a local transmission to work on, then ship it home to Ontario after.

So... I have interest, but there'd be a lot of logistics to work through.

I am sure we could round up a transmission for you out here.

Are there any BC guys interested in coming out and building up some transmissions next Spring? piratenanner.gif Or am I planning to far in advance?

I tried to organize the clinic in Montreal and it didn't work out mainly for these reasons:

1. Some people were expecting a $ 500 clinic where you disassemble, inspect, replace whatever is worn with used parts, reassemble and go. Since replacing the bearings is a must these days, and just those are close to $ 1K, many bailed out.

2. It was a long haul for DrEvil and his family from Ohio to Montreal and given the low number or participants, it just wasn't worth it for him.

I wish you guys have better luck than me to get things going.

We really liked the clinic in the Tacoma area and a lot of folks showed up. There are a lot of 914’s within 300 miles, including parts of BC, and that might make it desirable for Dr. Evil?

I am sure we can find a venue if the timing works for Evil.

Hi Pete, I have been chatting with Mike (Dr. Evil) about a possible clinic here on the CA Central Coast, too. He likes to have ~ 10 people participate so that "tuition" is about $300 per student. Since our 901 transaxles are now so old, Mike believes all intermediate bearings should be replaced; list cost is $1300 but he can source them for ~$800. Mike's supply of good used trans parts is also drying up, so that is another challenge for some whose box is particularly worn. I'll be watching the interest level here on your thread, and might start a separate thread if you're unable to get enough commitments.

Hmmm, BC in the spring... I wonder if Nancy's up for an extended roadtrip vacation?!?! driving-girl.gif

We took in a trans recently that needed the intermediate plate machined because the bearings were loose in their mounts. That’s $400. Add in the bearings, a couple gears, dog teeth, sliders, labor, etc and you quickly have a $3,500 rebuild.

I'm in Michigan, but would be interested in a clinic this fall 2022. Let me know where.

Are there some Pacific Northwest guys who would like to join?

Hey folks, here is some info:

I am up for doing clinics again, but some things have changed just due to age of the transmissions. We can no longer get buy with the quick and dirty at the clinics, and used parts are drying up because my business is booming at home. Thats another obstacle as a weekend away from my shop means everyone has to way another week for theirs to be done. Its always something.

BC, Mid Coast CA, and Quebec are all options if we can get the numbers. Goal is 10 people @ $300/head.

New bearing kits are recommended and will include both intermediate shaft and input shaft bearings. Retail is about $1200, I can get it for $750-800 depending on qty and how the moons are aligned, and the price of hamster milk futures.

Used parts are in short supply due to either being fewer and far between with most being shitty, or me using up what I have at my home shop on builds here. I can get new parts for cost, this causes another hurdle.

What I would propose is that once we have attendance set, and transmissions in hand, we do a video conference to have me guide you all on the disassembly of the transmissions so that we can inspect the parts and assure a few things:
1- is it a rebuildable core? If not, can it be salvaged.
2- What specific parts are needs so as to not over buy expensive parts.

This will also allow us to have part of the work done prior to me manifesting in the shop. This may turn out to be the normal, but we will need a test run first.

$400 to fix an intermediate plate???!! Man, I just replaced one with good used for $50. Ouch. That is a part we can inspect, possibly, and then I can bring replacements.

This is a brainstorming thread, too, so please float ideas. Im looking for efficient, fair, simple, and value.

If it's local enough (PNW or Canada BC-ish), I'd try to attend. Not to build another tranny, but provide some sarcastic commentary for the students and teacher.

Recently relocated from Louisiana to the Lower Mainland. Mike rebuilt my transaxle about 18 months ago (with the addition of a Wavetrac LSD)...it works/shifts like a dream...would be interesting to watch an overhaul though.

I'd definitely be interested in a Quebec (or Ontario) clinic.

Gord, You shoulder get together with Mihai914 and Cantly914 as they were the ones trying to get a Quebec clinic going, but we had like 4 people interested.

Also, I am open to doing stuff local in my Loveland, OH shop

If the B.C. thing doesn't work out for me, then Loveland would be an easy 10 hour drive. Would you require less people in the group if you did a clinic in your own shop?

Add me to the list of people interested in CA Central Coast if the timing works.
