914World.com _ 914World Garage _ “stock” 911 mufflers that will fit a 914/6

Posted by: arbitrary Jul 26 2022, 02:32 AM

Valance issues aside, will most/all early 2-in 2-out 911 mufflers/silencers fit a 914/6? I ask because I’m thinking of something sportier-sounding for my 914/6 conversion and I wanted to explore off-the-shelf options from Dansk and others.

My understanding is that a standard 2-in 1-out 914/6 muffler is the same as an early 911 except that the tailpipe angle is different.

Yes, my understanding is the stock 911 2 in 1 out muffler is the same except for the tail pipe exit angle. When I bought my car it did not have the rear valance on it and it had a 911 muffler installed. beerchug.gif

I’m running the M&K two in two out. You can cap one side or point that side down. Awesome sound and lighter than a stock muffler.

Here is what it sounds like. Sounds exactly the same on my stock 3.2

you are right. the 911 muffler will fit fine without a rear 914 valance

The 914-6 porthole valence will only work with the 914-6 muffler. If you use a 911 muffler, you can use the 914-4 porthole valence or the shorter late valence.

Why Porsche didn't just use the 914-4 valence and the 911 muffler has been lost to time.

I had a similar question on my build/refresh thread. My 914-6 conversion had a stock 1974 911 muffler. The tail pipe was below the 4cyl valance cutout. I bought one of @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9892 mufflers, but it still had that 1974 tail pipe placement:

I bought a section of SS 90degree pipe, cut and welded on the new tail pipe in the preferred location. I believe if you have a 1973 and earlier 911 muffler as others have stated, the tail pipe exits out the 4cyl valance cutout fine.

I think issue with yours was one of the initatial runs and George Rudawsky and I worked on his car to get them right. Eventually went to the pre 74 orientation. Unfortunately I am no longer involved in any stainless products(at least for now) so I am not doing any r&d and forget exactly. There is a new player in that arena and I am sure he will eventually get into details of differences.

I used the SCART 914-6 Super Sound exhaust on my car. It fit perfectly with the factory /6 valance. 2 in and 1 out.

So it sounds as though something like https://www.parts-wise.com/porsche-911/dansk-exhaust-systems/c134/91111102500dual-911-(65-77,-with-2-inlets)-exhaust-silencer,-painted-aluminized-steel-with-double-50mm-centre-tail-pipes.-(without-tuv/eec-approval)/p125594/ will fit with a suitable valance?
