914World.com _ 914World Garage _ I found a 6 cylinder! And some other stuff

Posted by: B3owulf Sep 10 2022, 07:18 PM

So I previously posted looking for advice on building a type 4 or trying for a -6 conversation. In general people advised a mild type 4 build and just enjoy the drive. I decided to keep an eye out for a 6 but plan on just using the type 4 I had.

Then I got a few weeks leave from Iraq and happened to come across a no reserve eBay auction for a storage unit not far from home. I got a 2.0 MFI 911E engine, a complete 1.7 type 4, and a destroyed targa 911 for about $6k. Both engines turn over easily and look fairly complete (have not had time for a detailed inventory yet though). Pretty excited, need to offload or strip the 911 before I head back to Iraq but I’m looking forward to trying to get this 6 conversation going! If this ends up needing a rebuild I will probably run a 4 while I acquire parts/save money but it should be a fun long term goal!

I will post some pictures in a bit…the 911 is comically bad.

Should have a gold mine of parts on the 911 IF they are not trash.

Nice find on the engine.
What year is the targa?

I dont know the year on the targa, the data plate is damaged. I will try figuring it out from the VIN tomorrow.

I would describe it as not economically repairable but the suspension and brakes are there, it rolls freely, and the floor pan looks solid so it could be a good parts car.

Really I just wanted the 911 engine.

Great buy.

Posted by: bkrantz Sep 10 2022, 08:23 PM

Nice score.

I can imagine one scenario:
Build a 914 with the suspension and brakes from the derelict Targa, and run it initially with the 1.7. Part out the rest of the Targa to fund rebuilding the six, and then put it in the 914.

And watch yourself over there.

Definitely a great option, I’m hoping it does not need a full rebuild but who knows.

Great find and the E motor is worth a lot more than you paid smile.gif!

A full engine and MFI system rebuild is staggering, but the starting price helps.

…guessing a 76 or 77

Posted by: mepstein Sep 10 2022, 09:12 PM

The deal was worth it for the mfi engine alone. I haven’t sold one recently but a non running E should be worth double what you paid. More if it runs and the numbers are good.

Edit - looking at pics, it might also need a complete rebuild and that’s $20-30k with mfi

Take a look at 914-6Werkshop.com for really great conversion parts. The owner Ben goes by MB911 on this site.

The gold foil on the fan strap would make it a 1969 2.0 E with the yellow fiberglass.
The pull type clutch says 2.2 or newer. Or installed with a newer trans.
Look on the casting upright at 5oclock on the fan support and at the horizontal
surface just below.
You'll find the engine type stamped there.
Excellent find.
You deserve it.

Nice buy.. exactly like we discussed previous to your deployment. Best of luck.

Posted by: rgalla9146 Sep 11 2022, 06:13 AM

Those aluminum trailing arms and taillight features are much more recent than the engine.

Congratulations on a terrific find/buy. Thank you for your service and watch how you go. beerchug.gif

Exactly! I will get in touch when the dust settles a bit and we can discuss swap parts.

Wow...Farout. Congrats on the score

Posted by: rhodyguy Sep 12 2022, 07:31 AM

These days the lowly 1.7 case is the go to for performance T-4 builds. Don't discount it's value just yet.

Posted by: Root_Werks Sep 12 2022, 08:46 AM

Wow, nice score! Lots of great parts.

Sound that MFI engine, if it doesn't need a rebuild, that's a great find.

Posted by: B3owulf Sep 22 2022, 01:14 PM

Had some time to tinker, so far nothing hugely alarming on the engine. The pump spins freely, plunger on the back compresses and resets smoothly, and nothing seems bound up. I am missing a throttle linkage and most of the hoses probably should be replaced but overall not bad.

Took some pictures down the bores, no corrosion but certainly a bit of wear and carbon. Also all the pistons have a 0 on the face. It is not something I am familiar with. Did some googling but no answers yet.

Unfortunately I will have to pause the work for a while but can move forward by looking for parts and building some knowledge on this MFI madness.

Whats the serial number right side fan support ? faces right..

Factory GRP sizing designation, on piston top

Posted by: B3owulf Sep 22 2022, 06:05 PM

6122116 is the number on the right of the fan shroud

Group size! That makes sense, thanks! When I put the scope down the first one and saw a weird mark I was worried it was damage! I was relieved when I saw the same mark on all of them.

Wow- what a find! Congrats.

If you’re parting out the 911, I’d love to know more about those rims, if you’re not going to use them- Always liked the 80’s BBS basket weaves!

I did end up selling the whole chassis with the wheels. That was always one of my favorites as well, I have a similar style (but not 3 piece) on my 914

Did the E engine have cast iron cylinders and a sand cast aluminum case? I had an E engine once and I think that was what deterred me from hotrodding it. Mine may have been a later E engine though so could be entirely different. I can't remember what color the shroud was.

Posted by: sixnotfour Sep 24 2022, 11:42 AM

mag case after 68,,, E should be green.. Thats why I wondered the Serial #.... T had iron , E/S Had biral alum. fins iron liner.

I determined e from the mfi pump model, is that not correct? Not an expert by any means.

Did you get a chance to look it up? I am curious if the engine block matches the fuel system and shroud.

Just adding to the info.

Wow awesome score. I sold just the MFI part off of a motor like this for 6k.

Posted by: rgalla9146 Sep 30 2022, 08:08 AM

6122116 appears to be a 1972 E
If you look on the horizontal surface near the number you provided I think you'll
find the type number 911/51
A very nice engine indeed. Great find.

Posted by: B3owulf Sep 30 2022, 10:49 AM

Thanks for the info!

I will look for the other markings to confirm when I am back stateside. Cant wait to start cleaning it up and getting it in my car, should be a riot to drive!
