I'm happy to start this thread...

thanks to Sharon Ginter !!!! aktion035.gif
we have a plan for this years RRC event.
sure hope to see all of my friends again!

going to be back to basics this year...
lots of parking lot time, and a great location.
our hotel is Rabbit Ears in Steamboat, right on the river. next to a park. and walking distance to historic down town

Plus new roads for all of us to play on and there are some good ones too!

Shirt details below!

We have a block of rooms reserved... and with a bit of a discount on our reservations.
you have to tell them you are with the Red Rocks Classic to get the discount.
I asked the owner to try and put us together somewhat at the hotel

(please be on good behavior in the parking lot... I will police trash and recycle and promised to keep us in good standing with the management) Its a valid concern for management as they are very busy in the fall. I promised that we would all be responsible adults... so there may not be campfire Shenanigans this year... but there can still be General Shenanigans!

We have arrival on thursday...
driving on friday and saturday
and working out some food options soon.

There are 3 room options to choose from.
please note, they told me a 7 day cancellation policy
so pay attention to the dates if you end up changing plans.

our Block of rooms is until June.
this is a busy time of year in Steamboat, and after they release the rooms they could fill up... so time to make your plans!

the local direct number is (970)879-1150

or the 1-800 number below works too:

Many thanks for your interest in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Rabbit Ears Motel is conveniently located 2.5 miles from the ski area in downtown Steamboat Springs. We are directly across the street from the Old Town Hot Springs swimming pools and natural hot springs. We offer our guests discounted admission passes to the Old Town Hot Springs and we are in walking distance to many local shops and restaurants. The city provides free bus service to and from the ski area every half hour from our front door.

All of our rooms are equipped with hair dryers, small refrigerator, microwave, coffee makers, Flat Screen TVs, phone with voice mail and data ports, and access to free wireless internet. Deluxe units also include irons, ironing boards, and private balconies. A full free continental breakfast is included for all guests. Here is the Rate Proposal based on a 3 night stay. Early departure will result in rate increase.

Name: Brant McClung

Arrival Date: September 14 2023

Departure Date: September 17 2023

Standard Room with 1 queen or 2 double beds @ $139.00 + tax per night
Deluxe Room with 1 king or 2 queen size beds, with a balcony @ $189.00 + tax per night
Deluxe Room with 1 king or 2 queen size beds, with a balcony and a river view @ $189.00 + tax per night
Cancellation Policy:

Reservations must be cancelled by 3:00 pm, 7 days (SEVEN DAYS) in advance of the arrival date. No-Show reservations and reservations past the cancellation policy will be charged the first nightly rate and tax.

Email us at info@rabbitearsmotel.com for more information or give us a call.

the 914 WORLD, room block at this hotel is about to expire.

Going to have to consider this. My first 914 roadtrip in my brand new '73 1.7 took me from SoCal through Steamboat Springs on the way to Breckenridge. Off the showroom floor I drove enough miles for the break-in oil change (600 mi.) and then we were off! Learned first hand about the vapor lock problem on that trip.

It's a long drive from Pt. Townsend, but who knows?

In. Had my crew in steamboat in 1985, working just outside of yampa. Worse job I ever encounter doing seismic work, no place to land a chopper near the drills, place was full of dead fall, slippery when wet with pungie sticks lining the fallen trees. Glad to get outta yampa.

I second driving, but from Denver. 4-5 hours from DIA to Steamboat depending on path you choose to get there. Rent a fun car and drive from Denver. By the time you have a layover at DIA + flight you could be there driving and have enjoyed some nice scenery . There are multiple ways to get there and on a week day none will have too much traffic (accept in Denver). Lots of places to stop and enjoy on the way. Might consider driving thru Rocky Mtn National park instead of I-70 and enjoy wonderful views. Might even find 914worlder's to caravan with.

I'm considering taking the very long way to see Mount Rushmore on the way to RRC.

Do you all think the weather would be appropriate that time of year? On the R1200RT? In the TT?

Just ordered some shirts. I have put about 10k miles on the red 3.2, going to events. Early on I had trouble with oil tank overflow. While a wonderful preservative, it makes for accumulation of dirt. Spraying engine degreaser followed by detergent. After a couple of days I think it is getting closer to clean.
Then change the oil and fix gremlins from last summer. Arrive at Steamboat and head home for winter. I am psyched.

Spraying engine degreaser followed by detergent. After a couple of days I think it is getting closer to clean.
Then change the oil and fix gremlins from last summer. Arrive at Steamboat and head home for winter. I am psyched.

It'll be good to see you in Big Red again...she was running great last time!

Last year was a lot of fun. Lost a plug that sealed the oil in the cam tower. A cloud of smoke from the headers tipped me off. Then on the way home the nuts fell off of the motor mount. Trouble shifting is always worth a follow up, even if Nebraska is halfway home.
I learned something from Brant. Pack the front trunk full of jack stands and tools. Your clothes can go on the passenger seat. Replacement early model road jack arrived today to replace the old one that failed last year. “Colorado Rockies remind me of my home…”

Tomorrow is last day to order T-shirts. Looking forward to seeing everyone and hoping we can make a short side trip to Fish Creek Falls.

The falls are so great! I have spent a couple solid days cleaning the engine bay. Degreaser followed by degreaser. Rinse and repeat. Near as I can tell, the grime is slowly moving downhill. From the amount that landed on me, I must be making progress. Also, I made my own engine tin, but didn't get it all installed because it didn't fit. Fixing that.
Seattle's heat wave arrives here tomorrow. Around here that must mean winter is around the corner.

I hope so. Today was spent reworking engine tin to link the 3.2 to the 1972. Reshaping meant rehammering meant repainting. Decided to tryout a yellow epoxy primer from PPG and Boeing surplus. Waterborne and really sticky. Got it on eBay from someone who cruises the Boeing surplus lots.

I am still fixing things, but plan on getting started on Tuesday. Computer says I don’t need to leave that early, but it will give me shorter days behind the wheel. As far as I can tell, I go pretty straight until I reach Colorado. Then it gets more complicated. I had a friend who worked at the Grand Canyon. People would ask him how to get to the bridge across. Apparently mountains alter the road planning.

Leaving day after tomorrow. Taking I90 to around the Wyoming border and then angling south. Wheels are pretty aligned and for once the steering wheel is in the right position. Traveling with my wife for the first two days. Then she is heading to North Bend in her Subie. Today marks 47 years of married bliss. She will go with me to the hardware store and insist that I buy another tool.

Might do a drive-by on Saturday. Less than 100 miles on the -6 so far this year and the fall colors ought to be peeking through. Would come up through Craig and then down through Oak Creek, Wolcott and then I70 W home. Not certain but possible.

Hi guys,
At the last minute it looks I will be able to attend the RRC this year. I'll be trailering up from Las Vegas and arriving late Thursday or very early Friday morning. I have never been to the Rabbit Ears, do you guys think there will be parking for a truck and trailer?
Thanks
Mike

Left this morning and got as far as the great prairies of South Dakota. Navigating primarily with a garage sale altimeter from way back when. Also, i get on I90 in Madison and it pretty much goes west. Staying the night within the shadow of the world’s only Corn Palace. An arena decorated with dried pieces of corn. Along the route tomorrow we will pass (yes. pass) Wall as in Wall Drug. Most people eventually stop at least once. I have for each feature. There is also Mount Rushmore and the car collection in Murdo.
Don’t think that I am not a willing tourist. I plan on stopping at a distillery in Kadaoka.
Then on to Buffalo WY tomorrow. My wife will continue westward to North Bend. I will angle south to Steamboat and the Rabbit Ears.

Bummer about all the drama going on. I hope everyone is OK and healthy.

I lost all of my gauges on the way here, started 10 minutes from home. Pulled over and checked a few things, found a blown fuse. Left the parking lot and lost them again. Figured out it is when I use the turn signals. Not sure what is causing that. I am on fuse 4 now and 1 more spare. I accidently hit the turn signal out of habit again and blew fuse three.

Time to research what causes this issue. Everything is fine so far after that.

The car gods are messing with me. The other very minor issue I had on the drive was that the hardware for my air intake vibrated loose and went into the abyss. No problem, it was mostly stable. Went to Ace hdw this am and bought what I needed this time, lock washers too, I forgot them last time. I was going back to the motel to do the repairs, I am at the light in a turn lane, and the car dies. It will start, run for a sec and die. Had a truck right on my 6. I kept rolling closer to it. Light turned green, I waved him around and gravity and the hill I was on propelled me backwards into an empty parking lot. Pop the engine lid and the air intake system, including the MAF had fully disconnected. I hoped that was all it was. My first thought was something worse. I got it all hooked back up with the new hardware I had and it started and ran. Kind of choppy at first but it settled down.

Oh, and I left my phone in the motel room. Nothing like feeling stranded. Still not as bad as some ther are going through. I hope the worst is over for all.

Sorry Andy about the cuss word.
Am actually home now. Put chocks under the back wheels and dragged the dolly forward. Then started the car already in first gear and rode with it into the garage.
I have a photo, but here is the gist. A bottle of Glenfiddich meant to be poured out with all y’all in the parking lot. The tragedy, no wait; I am consoling myself.

All y’all look really grand. Tranny is out, tunnel has been examined, clutch tube is solid. Leaning towards a throw out bearing mismatch, but wish That gun had more smoke. Don’t matter cause I am completely jealous of you folks.

Made it home from central SD. The people in South Dakota are really grand. Went into a: wait for it. A dive shop, pawn shop, U haul dealer, weed dispensary, with a real friendly guy who hooked me up with a truck and a dolly, and away I went. From the Capital of South Dakota. Damn!
I was really looking forward to seeing you folks again. Get well soon Brant.
I am thinking either a throw out bearing buried in the pressure plate springs or a failed clutch fork. But hey, I built this, so the field is Wide Open.

My Money is on the cable. Maybe I can join you next year. This event is always one of my favs.

Will that fail progressively with continued tightening?

New pressure plate and TO bearing arrived today. Thinking that a second hand early KEP clutch might have had a mismatch between TO bearing and pressure plate such that the bearing became cocked somewhat sideways, limiting my ability to release the clutch. Really disappointed. Suggest that 2024 RRC be held in Omaha or maybe Ames so I have a better chance of attending. Iowa hotel prices tend to drop off in late September, and if you make it as far as Dubuque, you can have a ham sent home. Oh, who am I kidding? That is light pink rocks classic at best.

It needs more paint correction than that to be really nice. There are still a lot of scratches and some strange water marks or something that aren't showing up in those pictures. They are hard to capture in that light. But the difference is really amazing. You were right.
