So my son, who is 11, and I will be headed to Rennsport in September and wanted to know who from around here is going to attend? Any must see things around Salitas i need to check out? Also anybody know where a good place to rent a fun car for the long weekend?

Posted by: Beach914 Jan 31 2023, 08:26 AM

First, I hope you've secured a place to stay in Monterey, Seaside, or Salinas already. Things to do mostly involve the coastal scenery, Big Sur, Point Lobos, Pebble Beach. Great drive out to Carmel Valley Village on Carmel Valley Rd. Downtown Carmel and Carmel Beach, bring your down vest in October ! That's what NorCal beaches are all about.
Don't think there would be much going on in Salinas for you.
Hopefully we'll be blessed with great weather that's typically present at the end of Summer on the central coast.

Posted by: sixaddict Jan 31 2023, 08:44 AM

Maybe the garlic festival ( seriously there is one) ……or maybe a Bobby McGee siting. dry.gif
Sorry Bill…couldnt resist.

The Monterrey Aquarium is excellent. Easy to spend a half day there. There are also whale watching trips which can be wonderful if you find a good group of whales. Drive along the coast towards Big Sur. Amazing scenery. Many places to stop. We happened upon a feeding frenzy of a couple hundred birds dive bombing anchovies right next to the shore. Incredible to watch. Farther down the coast is the Hearst Mansion. Lots of little things to do also.

Very interesting area. You won't have trouble finding things to do and see.

Posted by: Bullethead Jan 31 2023, 09:58 AM

agree.gif The aquarium is terrific, well worth spending half a day. The drive to Big Sur is a classic must do, take HWY68 to Laureles Grade road to get to Carmel Valley. There's usually an ad-hoc Porsche gathering at the Cantina (good food), and you definitely want to drive the Carmel Valley road. It terminates at Greenfield; the 101 brings you back to Salinas. Or you can do a loop around Chachagua Park, it's quiet and beautiful, take a picnic. All of the valley roads are picturesque. Please post pics for those of us unable to attend this year!

Posted by: racer914 Jan 31 2023, 10:14 AM

I'll be there! I'll be working as the Steward for the PCA Club Race group but should have plenty of time to look around too. We might be able to get you and your son up to the tower for a look see.

Posted by: campbellcj Jan 31 2023, 10:49 AM

I'll be there as well - camping at the track all 3 days which is my favorite way to experience Laguna Seca. There was an earlier thread as well with some discussion of meet-ups for dinner or local drives/activities which sounds awesome.

Posted by: BillJ Jan 31 2023, 11:08 AM

Wow great feedback all!!! I think the aquarium seems like a winner for sure. I wish my 6 was one of the gt kit cars to maybe be elligible to run but would LOVE a look in the tower. Last one i went to was RR3 so has definitely been a minute

I will be there. At a minimum you will want to do 17 mile drive and walk around downtown Carmel. I also enjoyed Clint Eastwoods ex restaurant the Hogs Breath in downtown Carmel.

Posted by: AzGuy238 Jan 31 2023, 01:17 PM

Suzanne and I will be there. Fly into San Jose and rent a car there.

Posted by: Eric_Shea Jan 31 2023, 01:59 PM

We'll be there...

Check Turo for car sharing.

Big Sur is a great drive. Nepenthe is a nice restaurant with "the" view. Go further to Ragged Point Inn for a great lunch. Plenty of stops along the way.

Posted by: sixaddict Jan 31 2023, 03:06 PM

I checked hotels and choked. Is that why you stay in Salinas?
Still possible to get rooms there?

Posted by: BillJ Jan 31 2023, 03:42 PM

I booked several months ago. I usually go more high brow.but with my son and.i stayed simple.

Posted by: bkrantz Jan 31 2023, 08:35 PM

I will be there, but in my 991. Hotels are indeed a challenge, to find and pay for.

Posted by: infraredcalvin Jan 31 2023, 09:38 PM

For now I’m driving the 930 up from SoCal with the wifey. Looked at hotels again today, crazy that motel 6 quality motels are in the $300+ range…

We have a group driving mostly 914's down from Spokane WA. One of the 4 is driving his 75 911. Should be a great trip. I'm bringing my BB. One of my buddies will drive his Tangerine 6 down. Luckily we have another friend with a 2nd home in Pebble Beach. Tough life that one has :-)

We'll be there coming up from L.A. For events at Laguna Seca, we always stay in Paso Robles. it's only a little over 100 miles between the two. Easier hotels that far out. Just get up early find some coffee and get on the road.

I’ll be driving my ‘81 911 down from Whidbey Island. Will have to link up with you guys along the way.

Excellent. I have a lot of history with Whidbey. We should stay in touch. We can post our route and days/times and see if anyone else wants to try and connect on the way.

for those coming from out of town, santa cruz has lots of hotels and is about an hour north. gilroy is also about an hour away and has great mexican food!

i'm in south san jose and it takes me about 90 minutes.

might be nice to have some "914 world" name tags so we might recognize each other. some years ago, someone suggested a secret hand signal of 3 fingers pointed down on the other upheld palm to represent a jackstand... biggrin.gif

Posted by: dgw Feb 3 2023, 09:43 PM

I live about 70 minutes from the track. I get a room because I don't like driving home in the horrible traffic.
There are some good suggestions on places to go, things to see. I strongly recommend that you check google maps or other sources to verify that where you want to go, the road is open. Here is the Santa Cruz mountains many roads are closed or otherwise impacted by landslides or wash outs that make them impassable. You might think that by the end of September things would be fixed but the amount of damage far exceeds the state and county governments ability to fix everything by then.

Posted by: BillJ Feb 3 2023, 09:49 PM

Good advice! What does everyone think about picking a night and place to gather for a 914World reunion?

As you get closer to the date there will be coral passes available at sites like rennlist- either to trade or buy as people decide to take different cars, etc.

Just a few more restaurant suggestions for the folks staying in the Monterey area. Been to these ones a few times and they are good choices for the wife and or kids :-)

Turn 12 bar & grill
400 Tyler Street
Monterey, CA 93940
https://www.turn12barandgrill.com/
(Great food and atmosphere)

Gusto Handcrafted Pasta & Pizza
1901 Fremont Boulevard
Seaside, CA 93955
www.gusto1901.com/
(Great Italian food and pizza, they said they could take parties as large as 24)

The Oven Pizzeria
720 Broadway Ave
Seaside, CA 93955
https://2peasdmd.wixsite.com/theoven
(New York-style pizza plus calzones & other Italian fare in a casual, family-style setting) Not much seating or atmosphere, but great Pizza

Baja Canitna and Grill
7166 Carmel Valley Road
Carmel, CA
https://www.carmelcantina.com/
(Great Burgers / Mexican food plus a great atmosphere, but it's very crowded during car/track events)

Safe travels to all of you!
Cheers,
Dominic

PS: Don't be speeding around Monterey or in the tunnel heading to and from Cannery Row, the police were in full force this week. They nailed a guy doing 98MPH in the tunnel ar15.gif

Headed out from the PHX area early Wednesday AM and staying in Bakersfield for the night. Hopefully the 991 corral won't be full by the time I get there Thursday morning...

Look forward to checking out all the 914's!

We will be leaving the Paso Robles area Thursday morning.

Would love to join up with any caravans heading through the area. Andrew (12) is always looking for an accomplice to hang out with.

Also staying in Marina.

Headed down early but leaving the 914 at home - towing the RV instead so my missus and son can join. Excited to see all the great cars again after a long break.

Anyone thinking of driving Highway 1 north , an excellent website give info on closures and expected completion dates.
And, the site is regularly updated
See: https://bigsurcalifornia.org/highway_conditions.html

Just depends if you’re in a hurry to get there. Last time I got a late start and took I5 up. Others complained they were stuck behind RV’s on hwy 1 and it took forever to get up there.

Yep...last time we went up the 1...same thing...rubber neckers...RV's no fun.

I5 through Hidden Hills...stop at the James Dean memorial...then Paso for a winery...and onto the 101 for the rest. Normally we stop for the night in the RV in Paso.

That's the plan for me. I will be leaving early Thursday morning. I-5 from the OC to the 46, visit the memorial than head over to the 101 to Monterey from there. Anyone want to caravan?

^ I went to Moorea in the mid 90's and it was gorgeous but what a weird juxtaposition of a couple fancy French tourist hotels and restaurants, with the remainder of the island mostly being poor indigenous folks living in huts and cooking fish over burning trash...imagine things have changed a bit now.

Anyways, really looking forward to RR7 and I think I'm going to head up Thursday and head home late Sat or early Sun. I'll be camping up above Turn 5-6 and would love to meet up with any World folks who want to say hi. beerchug.gif

Stopped at Canepa on the way this morning and did see Brutus in the shop partially disassembled. Lots of eye candy there, both in the shop and for sale.
Then onto Laguna- yes, lots of traffic!

Saw a few 914's and watched Rod Emery driving the '51 out onto the track with the Sonauto car. Thankfully the 991 corral is on pavement, otherwise it would take a couple weeks to clean the car when I get home!

Chatted with Pete Stout briefly and talked with Peter Brock, since I'd seen him this spring when I picked up an Aerovault. Saw Eric Shea but didn't get a chance to say hi.

Two favourites from today.

Left Spokane this morning. 3 74's and a 75 911. 4 50ish year old cars driven by 4 60+ year old idiots. Wish us luck.Attached Image

driving.gif You guys are brave, my wife spotted your caravan this morning on Hwy 101 just south of San Jose. I took the 914 down later this afternoon made it down here by night fall. See you all in the corral.

We made it and two of us will be at the crap 914 corral today. I have my Bumblebee and my buddy has his Ravenna 74. I was so disappointed in the coral compared to 2018. Talk about putting the 914s at the kids table in the other room.

The Ravenna car lost a CV joint about a mile from our hotel in Bend. We were parked just off 97. A truck comes by and says, "hey, you guys headed to Rennsport?" Yep. "Do you need help"? Yep. Lost a CV. "I'll call my brother, he lives just down the road and has a bunch of parts". A guy named Parker rolls up in a white Cayenne and has just cut a whole trailing arm with complete half shaft assembly from a parts car. The car was towed to the Bend Porsche dealership which has a dedicated classic tech and space. The guys name is Steve Byers. He had us back on the road by 11am Wednesday. Porsche of Bend rocks and many thanks to Parker in Bend. Breaking down sucks, but getting saved by the small 914 world, and a dealership that actually welcomes old cars helps make the trip all the sweeter.

thanks to a generous fellow here, i'm getting to attend saturday!

sadly, not driving the 914. the klr seems best to navigate possible dirt parking and keeping me from another speeding ticket through prunedale...

i'll be the one in the irish green tee with a signal orange teener on the front and the ear to ear grin!

mention this post for a beer on me!

Good to know the Frank's car (Ginther) is still around and running full out. They never leave anything on the table.

Curious....does Porsche have any booth on their new synth fuels or demo's?

Nice to see a dealer, and locals help out like that!

Hi-light today was running into Jochen Mass and JR Hildebrand when just out circulating... still looking for Mark Webber! smile.gif

Nice videos by Marshall Pruett at racer.com FYI

(saw the Mission X- just can't get excited about an electric car- too old school. Now ask me about a Lufthansa livery 914-6 GT, which I have luckily ridden in, or a GT1 race car...)

It did take some of the dirt off of it from the crappy dirt coral parking.

My brother and I went to Rennsport yesterday, Friday. The weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold- just right! It was crowded, but manageable. The vendors were out in full force.

We got easy parking (took the truck) and were only 1/4 mile, if that, from the entrance. So many beautiful cars. I really struggle to take pictures when there are so many nice cars as I am just looking at them.

My only criticism was the announcers seemingly never stopped talking over the event-wide sound system. Even during racing they were lacking non-stop - I just wanted to enjoy the engine sounds as the cars raced. I guess that is just an old-age thing on my part. confused24.gif

Jeff, thanks, yes that is Pam's 968. Luckily, the front engine / rear transaxle corral was right next to the lunch trucks, so even though it was still in the dirt, it was a much better corral than in years past.

Speaking of Jeff, here are two 914 heroes, (Jeff and Eric Shea) and one doofus (me):

The Eifel Trophy race didn't go too well for the 914s. There were a couple of early retirements, including the Viceroy 914 which I believe pulled off the track before the green flag came out. Here it is getting pulled back into the paddock.

Although they didn't win the race, it had to feel like a victory for the Frank team just to make it in the Eifel Trophy race. After the catastrophic engine failure on Thursday, they burned the midnight oil and were out there racing on Sunday.

As some of you know, I worked the 000 booth. An exhausting week, what with set up, the event and take-down/trailering home Sunday night. But cool, cool, cool!
I'll start with some of my favorite 911s:

Attached thumbnail(s)
Attached Image Attached Image Attached Image

Posted by: tygaboy Oct 2 2023, 10:06 AM

Here are just a couple pics I got of people who wandered into the booth to catch up with our very own @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=2058 Pete Stout. This is Peter Brock, designer of the Daytona Coupe, among other things, who came by on set up day. Our Pete looks up and says, "Hey Pete! You mentioned we should get into Pike's Peak. Come over and take a look at the record setting car..."
I'm just standing there with my chin on the floor. I'm such a fan-boy...

Attached thumbnail(s)
Attached Image

Posted by: tygaboy Oct 2 2023, 10:20 AM

Here's Grant Larson (in the BOSS jacket) chatting with 000 co-founder Alex. For those who, like me, don't know who this guy is:

"Larson joined Porsche in 1989. As an Exterior Designer, he was responsible for bold and breakthrough designs for the original Boxster and Panamera automobiles."

Important people whose work has impacted my life were just "stopping by to say hi...'

That includes another of our 914 family: @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1110 , with his wife Dianne, talking with Pete there in the background.

The absolute best part is that to a person, they were as nice as could be, willing to hang out and answer questions, take pics with the fans, etc. Just so crazy cool.

And here are a couple non-glamour, behind the scene shots on load-out day. It was fun talking with the team guys. Again, just a bunch of regular guys "at work". I'm drooling and they're just going about their buisness, totally unimpressed with themselves and the hardware.

Funny about the Newman 911: The team couldn't find their trailer as the guy who parked it wasn't around and no one could get him on a phone. While the search was on, I got to talk with the crew chief, hear about the weekend, etc. As with all these other people, as soon as I started asking about the car, he opens the engine lid, starts telling me about the issue they ran into with some eletrical component... Just regular folks at work, dealing with crap to get through their day.
What a weekend.

Headed out for the lapping session Sunday AM. I guess only in CA can it rain with blue skies... boy the car needed a GOOD bath, inside and out, on Monday after I got back to Scottsdale!!
OK it's not a 914, but it's not the early '70's anymore, and I'm not in my 20's anymore either!Attached Image

I followed one of Eric Shea's buddies in a nice Gulf blue 914- and there was a split window 356 (with French yellow headlights) in the row next to me!

Thank you. That’s my son’s car, Ryan McLaughlin. A handful of build photos on my IG account mlmgm9146. Most are at the early part of the feed.

beerchug.gif smilie_pokal.gif Loved the JWest booth. So glad they came. Nice family run operation!! Really nice people!! I tried to buy another shift knob, but it didn't fit my early Rennshift. Glad I was able to test out the shift knob while i was there. I ended up buying a new shift stem to fit the late knob and also purchased another 917 wooden shift knob to fit the late stem. Also bought the fog light adapter to flash your fog lights. With every purchase I got to select a freebee, so I also ended up with a tshirt, bag and hat. I can use the early JWest parts on my other 914. I think i visited this booth the most. I kept going back looking for something else to buy!!

Posted by: SKL1 Oct 5 2023, 03:25 PM

+100 on JWest- he helped me with a technical question as the rennshifts on both my 914's seem to work differently- he went through a few things for me to try and adjust. And I needed another shift boot so I had a new shirt to wear to dinner that night! smile.gif

James helped me out with new blue and gold springs. What a great business model and product line.

I also purchased several items from jwest. Discounted pricing and no shipping was nice incentive. Planed on purchasing more items but never found time to make it back around the vendors area, just too much cool stuff to see.

We got back home Wednesday around 3pm. A few wounds but nothing serious. Great return route, mostly up the coast. A lot of rain and fog. Thankful for working wipers. Cheers to everyone we got the chance to connect with.

If you get the chance. Check out the WAAAM (Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum) in Hood River OR. https://www.waaamuseum.org/

It is mostly an aviation museum but they have some cool cars there as well.

I was admiring your son's car Saturday morning at RR. I have the same fenders on my 914 vintage racer. I assume you custom made the front spoiler/airdam?

I noticed that the RR7 staff removed/replaced these colored-in panels a few times during the 4 day show.
Later in the day our #40 car'icature was hijacked and painted green & pink biggrin.gif

I agree about the WAAAM location. They try to drive and fly their exhibits at least one annually. Took my eldest son with me in my 914 just after the first of the month and drove to Madras to see the Erickson Aircraft Collection. These planes actually do fly. Most are WWII vintage and they are simply breathtaking.

I let my boy do the driving there and I drove home. Three hundred miles. Longest drive anyone other than me has made in the car. Longest drive I have ever done as a passenger in it. Seventy-seven year old man in a nearly fifty year old, 190K mile car that I have owned for 36 years. Man, that was fun.

So cool!

Did you ever notice it looks to me like the rear fenders on #40 are like 1/2" -1" wider than a normal GT?

These rear fenders are wider + good eye ! They were the prototype GT rear arches, hand beaten and buck formed>>prior to the metal stampings we are accustomed with.
