914World.com _ 914World Garage _ I found some 7" wheels

Posted by: trekkor Aug 10 2005, 10:52 PM

I bought a set of stock steel rims that have been modified.
The rim centers have been removed and welded into a 7x15 wheel ring with a 5" backspace.

$12.50 each ohmy.gif

Now, let's talk about the finish.

I've started media blasting them and we painted one today.

I'll take a picture for you tomorrow or maybe Mark will post one tonight.

They are a bright red metallic.
Kinda wild looking. The Hoosiers should like 'em.

Those wheels look great, can't wait to see them on the car.

Posted by: Brian Mifsud Aug 11 2005, 12:46 PM

I really like the idea of widened stock 4 lug rims. Now just add Muellers' front custom hubs as found on the Club Store and you can run 911 vented disks in front.

Sleeper traction and brakes.. now all you need is one of Raby's motors for the "Superman-VW" version of the "VW"/Porsche 914.....

Very cool.

Posted by: mskala Aug 11 2005, 03:31 PM

Yeah those are cool. I bet they're kinda heavy for the average
914, but you should have the power. Did anybody weigh them?
The Diamond steelies are listed at 23 pounds (7x15). My 6x15
cookies are about 14 pounds.

Posted by: trekkor Aug 11 2005, 04:51 PM

I'm going to get one tire mounted for a test fitment.

22#'s each...

The remaining three are blasted, and base coated right now.

Gotta get the car off the trailer, the wheels off, red coat on the the wheels, tires mounted and balanced- by 6:00pm idea.gif

I think those are the wheels that Roger Grubb should have bought for his V8 car.....too late now.....

Killer price, the set of identical rims that is on Jennys car cost me like $100 plus shipping and I think I sold them to her for like $80 or so.....

I do have a spare 15x7 just like those (in silver, hahaha), if any one is interested....make sure you inspect those wheels, I've seen cracks devolop on the lug nut seating portion.

Mike and Trekkor,

Yep, please keep an eye out for some cheapie 4 bolt steelies. Wide w/ that positive offset. So I may squeeze 'em under some mildly rolled fenders. YUMMIE!!!

15" or 16". Unless someone wants to sell some 17's... cheap.

And "Thanks" Brad for the lead on Stockton Wheel. I'll call them right now. =-)

Posted by: mskala Aug 13 2005, 02:54 PM

Hey, 5" backspace is about 36mm offset. With the hoosiers
do they actually fit under the fenders? Or have you rolled
significantly anyway?

Thanks

Last time I checked with them it was about $75 per wheel for a 15 rim...you need to supply the inner section, they supply the outer half.

Diamond Racing Wheels makes some 16" steel rims, the don't show the correct offset online, but I know they can make special offsets (FWD) if you ask them.

I was looking at them today on Trekkors car. They look great, but appear to need a bit of fenderlip rolling to clear comfortably. He had a few rub marks on one side. My 8X15 with 5" backsspace with the same tires needed some fairly agressive rolling, but clear with the stock fender.

Here's the best picture yet.

thanks to Ron Leppke of GGR. clap.gif

Fender rolling...we got that. biggrin.gif

Looks tough Trekkor!

what looks like chrome lugs adds a nice bit of brightness. the black center caps completes the fashion. looks swell.
