914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Are Koni Red Special D shocks rebuildable?

Posted by: jhynesrockmtn Mar 20 2023, 07:56 AM

I am going through the front suspensions on my BB. Lots of things just plain worn out. The strut inserts are Koni Red marked Special D 82R-1730. Are these rebuildable? If not, the best choice for replacement?

Yes. You can send them to Koni or a shock rebuilder that services Koni.

The cost will be about the same or more than new ones.

Came here to say that. Unless you're looking to get into custom valving, you may as well just buy new ones.

Koni doesn't rebuild themselves any more. There's special cases for us racers (you gotta know a guy) but they'll refer you to someone else for rebuilds. - GA

I agree. It’s usually done to preserve a date coded shock or for custom valving. If it’s just a simple replacement, it’s usually cheaper and quicker to buy new.

Unless you have an original receipt from when the shocks were lifetime warrantied.
