914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Yes, Brembo questions. Again.

Posted by: Tdskip May 25 2023, 07:21 AM

Good morning.

I managed to track down a couple pair of 3 inch caliper spacing Brembos.
I started to do some initial fitment validation and realized that one pair fits perfectly on a vented front disk 3 inch caliper spacing whereas the other fits the same 3 inch caliper spacing perfectly but has too narrow of an opening where the disc goes so it’ll only work on unvented brake rotors.

Any tips or coaching here on with the narrower pair will fit – is it simply a matter of needing an earlier non-vented from brake set up? In other words, one pair works fine with a 911 SC brake set up and I’m assuming the other pair should be fine with a non-vented 914 rotor?

Thanks.

Maybe Eric Shea will chime in. Spacers may have been removed to make it into a solid rotor application on narrow set. Pads are quite large and thick for these calipers.

Thanks for the response. They actually have removed all the references to these calipers from their site, or at least anything that ties them back to being from an Alfa anyway.

I’m pretty sure they work with solid 5 lug rotors like a 69 - 912 or 914-6.
Eric Shea is still the authority on what works.

I have stock early 911 solid rotors on my 5 lug conversion.

The 3" M calipers are the same left and right with a skinny spacer for solid rotors and a thicker spacer for vented rotors.

get another thin or fat spacer depending on which rotor you want.

Where do you the caliper spacers ?

Thanks for the discussion.

I wasn’t as clear as I needed to be - the vented rotor is too wide for the opening on the caliper. Think the non-vented will be OK, will see if it clears a 914 rotor (as a proxy) and report back.

Thanks!

Either you have 2 different calipers or 2 different thickness rotors. Brembo calipers have never used spacers (like Ate calipers do). Start measuring and see what's wrong

Good morning - I do have two different pair, one pair that works fine with vented rotors and one pair where the caliper is too narrow for vented rotors.

Both have 3 inch bolt spacing.

I bought three pair of used Alfa/Brembo calipers that fit 911 struts. They all had spacers.

Really? Are you sure about that?

Any tips on where to track down spacers?

Posted by: Krieger Jun 1 2023, 07:23 AM

Maybe PMB has an extra set. They did buy a stash of Brembos from an Alpha guy years ago.

The bolts might be an issue as well. Check availability. You can’t use big box store hardware. If it’s anything like ATE calipers, spacers are easy to make, hardware might be a challenge.

I replaced the original harware on on mine. They are just bolts. The caliper casting is threaded. Grade 10.9 or 12. I don't remember, but not hard to find

As a first step, contact the person you got the non-spacer pair from… ask him if he may have removed the spacers at some point and if he still has them and the bolts stashed away somewhere.

Btw, if I’m not mistaken, the non-spacer pair would only work with the early stock /4 struts and not the later ones.. someone correct me if that’s wrong.

Maybe for a 3” solid rotor like a 912

Posted by: jcd914 Jun 1 2023, 11:17 AM

I have 3 pair of the Alfa Brembo calipers and they all have spacers that measure approx 9mm thick.
If you are going 5 lug suspension you could run solid rotors from early 911/912 or you could run them on 914 solid rotors. 914 solid rotors are 10mm thick, 911/912 solid rotors are 12mm thick.
I previously ran 912 calipers on my 71 914-4 solid rotors and they worked good but I could over heat them.

I was referring to Tdskip's remark about it fitting a non-vented 914 rotor - I'm saying, not necessarily so if using later struts/rotors.

We should have extra spacers and fasteners
