A long scary drive. I’m glad they are ok
Posted by: Geezer914 Jun 4 2023, 05:59 PM
What is that car they were driving? No spare tire????
Posted by: technicalninja Jun 4 2023, 06:02 PM
That is a front wheel drive Fiat!
Did they complain about sparks?
It's a wonder that made it home...

Many new cars don't come with a spare tire anymore, not even a space saver.
Posted by: windforfun Jun 4 2023, 07:10 PM
Copy that. They now come with the injectable "fix a flat" crap. This shit can damage your alloy wheel.
Posted by: Geezer914 Jun 4 2023, 07:41 PM
This country is getting more stupid every day! No spare tire! What's next, no life jackets or parachutes?
Posted by: Front yard mechanic Jun 4 2023, 09:29 PM
I would have done the same thing but drivin 70 miles an hour to get home faster

or "run flats". highly questionable but apparently.

global problem. no one knows how to change a tyre, male or female below a certain age.
so whats the point of a spare tyre say the manufacturers. not enough RAM in their brains to deploy the spare tyre option anyway!
very unwise of said old folks to drive on the rim.
likely more damage than just the rim.
each to his own.

I couldn't do it. The noise would have me on the shoulder instantly.

Just recently ditched the run flats from my BMW X5. Ride quality vastly improved and the steering and handling degradation is barely perceivable.
Now I find myself driving around with a kit of tire plugs, mini compressor, a couple cans of fix a flat and a AAA card
Anyone have an X5 mini spare you want to get rid of?

So true
The OEM’s ditch the spare more often for the fuel economy, weight reduction as the primary reason. Sometimes it’s also a case of not having the space to package one.
The fact that most drivers don’t or won’t change a spare factors in to that decision too.
Some Fiat 500s do have a spare but I honestly don’t know which ones do or don’t. Maybe this one was one without?

Even a $500 car I'd pull over right away. My brain couldn't take running on a rim.

70 miles at 20mph, must have been crazed when the poor folks finally got her fixed
Posted by: slowrodent Jun 5 2023, 10:27 AM
Glad everybody is ok..... Risky to motor along the berm at 20mph for any real distance....
My wife's loaded Kona did not come with a spare ... just a can of goo and a tiny compressor. I bought the spare immediately.
You need to make a coffee table out of that wheel for sure!
Posted by: Chris914n6 Jun 5 2023, 01:46 PM
I would have moved it to a non drive wheel. Who knows the trans/diff damage at this point. But no spare probably no jack either?
