That's the VIN/body number.

Do all the cars have that or just 71 & newer?

It is not a VIN, it is the Karmann body production #.
3849610 can be decoded as week 38, Thursday and 110th body that day
I figured out this code back about 1977 from about 30 sets of data.
Now, there are different codes for the 914/4 and the 914/6, and the 914/6 pattern is completely different. Sometime in mid late 1974 model year the number moved from the rear trunk floor to a rivetted tag in the front trunk. Sometime in 1975 the xxy95zz base changed to xxy90zz, and it would appear that after that the zz was not exclusive to the 914 being made by Karmann.
In 1970 model year the number was central (in front of the lock), then moved to the right corner for 1971 model year.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1244 Can you explain the number please? I know this has been explained in another thread but a friendly reminder would be nice smile.gif

38 = week
4 = day (starting Monday)
9610... I see the 10 but where is the 100 (110) in there? And what is the meaning of 96?

Thank you! beerchug.gif

the xxy95zz base format was used from 1969 production start. zz is the sequence number, and good for 99 cars, 100 cars and more the 95 changed to 96. So from a 9500 base and 110 and get 9610
What the 9 means I am not certain but possibly the production facility or production line. Since they went to a base 9000 later I suspect that the 500 was just a base point leaving the 9000 to 9499 for other models being produced. Then when the base 9000 began to be used it may be that all models in production on that line were mixed together.
