Saturday night will be a modern Vegas style Hotel & Casino in Laughlin. (Haven't figured out which one yet. Leaning towards The Aquarius.)

We had fun with this one.
Marks startup video. We rebuilt this 2270 RAT Eng. built by Jake in 2005 that went bad after a several year run. Oiling problem took out a main bearing. We did a full rebuild on heads, Align Bore, Rebuilt rods. Balanced, Clutch. Flywheel machined. New pressure Plate, Everything. The Machinist, George. Said it needed. And there you have it. They put in on there test setup and great oil pressure and George says it sounds go to go to PMB Performance tomorrow. To be installed in. Our 1974 two-liter body with no rust. CA car blue plates

Sweet. Bob, were you checking the for oil leaks or praying?
Mark was filming it; I was not worried on anything on this Eng. George the machinist gave perfect direction to us and between the other four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines I've built I kind of new that it would be OK. I've always said the machinist is your best friend. George at http://www.europeanmotorworks.com/ knows what he is doing, and he is 14 minutes from my shop in Inglewood. He does PMBs Eng, and Ian Karr used them and well he is not a kid and has over 30 years’ experience on machining air cooled engines. Much better to have it tested before it gets to Erics at PMB Performance All the video’s like Ian Karrs and even the young Jake Rabie DVD/ CD helped. It was a 2270 so it was just a little different.

Another mid-winter event I see. The red car has only headers, and the other car is in pieces. That leaves the favorite: my TR6. Heat is not only available, it is mandatory. Of course it comes with some SCCA baggage from the past. If it doesn’t rain, it might be the perfect vehicle.
But then, driving the 914 is admittedly more fun.

We will almost certainly trailer the 914 from Colorado (or I will be alone). Any suggestions on where to leave the truck and trailer? Obvious would be in Mesquite (and drive back there at the end) or Bullhead City (and get to Mesquite in time for the start). other ideas?

Booked. I am hoping to be able to open trailer my car. I am sure I will not be the only one - it is about 10 hours for us to the Best Western Mesquite Inn- that would be a long day in a 6 with no AC. Much rather trailer it and be comfortable for the trip there and back.
Any idea if we would be able to leave our truck/trailer at this hotel and then return on the way home to load and go?
BTW, the 1st night at Best Western was $201.38, at the group rate; just an FYI. The other two were $122 and about $100.

I will offer up for parking at my house as well. Additionally I can offer trailer parking where my trailer is stored (my daughters house) she lives on a large lot and rents out trailer parking to customers. I'm sure she'd be ok to leave truck and trailers for a few days no charge.

I am booked but only for the last night. I will probably meet up with everyone in Overton Friday morning, do the drives then hang out with everyone that evening in Boulder City. Saturday morning I'll then head out with everyone.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=21195 - Hi Mike, if it is OK, I may want to park a truck/trailer if we end up trailering my car.
Posted by: mxkinn01 Dec 14 2023, 06:34 PM
Michael,
The offer is there for your truck and trailer. I've always just left my tow rig at the host hotel, but this time its a different hotel every night.
So far @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9712 and @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=23343 have reached out and we will end up at my daughter house to leave your rigs there. We are both located on the northwest side of Las Vegas and its about a 1 - 1.5 hours away (81 miles) from Mesquite.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=21195 – Hi Mike, I think I will be trailering my 6 for it first big outing and long shake down. I am lowering my 2022 Honda Ridgeline next week (2 inches Front and 3 inches for rear) and I have to work out the tow set up. Mike has a lowered truck. I may be better off towing to each set up, just not sure as of today

They did the same to me but I was expecting it. The guy I spoke to on the phone told me that they were going to do it. I guess it is their standard process.

I couldn’t find a 914 in the Las Vegas area. The guy with the 914s for rent is in Scottsdale and I didn’t want to ask him if I could put that many miles on a car. You can search Drive Share. Com and see if you can find one.

I don't know if my car identifies as a Nine Fourteen but purist snobs have thrown it into the NARP category with the 914 for decades.
BTW, I just got her back to running on her own power for the first time in about four years. I think she is due for a return engagement to the Rt 66 Classic.

Sure. I pick up the car at 1:00. When we’re planning to leave?

How about Gaudin Porsche Stealership.
I think they still have their 914 Bumblebee classic restoration for sale.

I'm good with all of that. Since Bob is the only one parking a trailer, He will just leave it in front of my house. Bob if your a little late we can meet up with John and Billy somewhere heading north on the I15, as meeting at Gaudin Porsche dealership would be backtracking from my house (although they do have cool cars there).
As we get closer we can text each other to finalize, both of you have my number.
Thanks Mike

The short answer is 'Neither'.
Lunch on Saturday will be in Henderson at the El Torito Cafe.
I am glad I took the opportunity to burn a tank of gas, kill bugs and do a reconnaissance run.
1.) Most the road to Kingman is in poor condition. It was uncomfortable in the Cayman, and would have been brutal in a 914.
2.) Someone stole our plan and Rt66 Kingman/Oatman/Topoch will be clogged with a bike rally.
3.) There is no time and no good reason to include Needles.
4.)Because of what I learned, there have been modifications to our schedule and route.
5.) Most of you have plenty of driving to do on Sunday. We will now have more time to explore and enjoy Boulder City and the other interesting areas.
Please see the first post on this thread for all the up-to-date information and schedule changes. *(Yes. This means Oatman Rt66 is out.)
**(No. We will not be reprinting the shirts.)

Went on Oscar's So Cal drive Saturday and it did not end well for me. Looks like I lost a front wheel bearing. The ride back to my trailer in Riverside was in the cab of a flat bed. Looks like the spindle did not get hurt, but I'm struggling getting whats left of the outer bearing off. Off to The 900 Series Porsche shop with the spindle to have them remove it. All that said I may have to cancel the RT66 this year, I'll be showing up in a Honda this year. Bob
@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=23343 your still covered for trailer parking.

Not totally sure, had them installed about 3 1/2 years ago (The 900 Series, guys that only work on air cooled Porsche's), so my guess is under 8-10k. Passenger side is perfect. I almost never drive with the top on and usually have ear pods in so if they were make noise I wouldn't and/or didn't hear it. I will be checking on a regular basis going forward, I have no excuses since I don't work anymore.

Mike, that should be a quick, simple repair. If you need any parts LMK. I just converted to 5 lug and have a complete 4 lug suspension. Myself, I'm waiting on a gas tank presently.

That bolt is fine and looks like you can file the edge and flip the washer. Kinda surprised the shop didn't have one.
I should have 4 washers someplace but not likely to find the hiding spot in the next 9 days. They're behind 20 years of new junk parts.

Chris I did find a thrust washer from a VW buddies place (didn't want to take advantage at Carl's Place). The bolt took a bit of heat while scraping on the dust cap and pushed one of the edges in, had to hammer a hex bit in to remove it. I really just wanted a better one. When I ordered the new bearings and seal I was told Thursday. Just received an email saying half the order arrives Thursday and half Monday. Gonna be close!

I'll be driving on Thursday from Flagstaff to Mesquite. I'm thinking about driving old Route 66 from Seligman to Kingman rather than the interstate.
Edit: Probably going to take I-40 after all. Google says 4 hours by I-40 and almost 8 hours via old Rt 66. I'm hoping to make it for lunch at Cafe Berlin.

No beetle needed for this run. I received an email stating the inside bearing wasn't coming until Monday or Tuesday, WTH???
I finished up the 914 Friday after locating an inside bearing locally, thanks to The 900 Series Porsche shop. I did notice some inside front tire wear, so an alignment is in order. But for now I just used the old string, straight edge and tape measure method, it was toed out by about 3/16 inch.

I was getting nervous.
The 914 was throwing oil all over on the passenger side of the engine both above and below the tins and the 944 has got oil in the coolant.
The 944 is most likely an oil cooler housing gasket.
I thought the 914 was an oil cooler seal even though I just changed them a few months ago.
I wasn't liking my odds of getting them both fixed by Thursday morning.
My odds just got a whole lot better. The oil cooler seals are fine. The passenger valve cover gasket had dropped down out of place along the top edge and left a major gap for oil to fly out and get on everything.
I have the 914 fixed, now to jump on the 944.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.

I plan to leave Scottsdale around 8AM. If I get lucky I'll meet the boyz in Vegas. My departure timing is flexible.

Shoot me a text with an eta for Kingman and I will meet up with the AZ caravan there. I am at 602-697-3762. Ed

The give-away that these cracks are fault are the scratch marks (here almost vertical) created when one side moved down and the other side moved up.
ps. Don't tell the dam operators about the faults. They already have enough to worry about.

F-ing snow between Vail and Georgetown. -SharonG
Posted by: burton73 May 6 2024, 01:08 PM
We took the 15 down towards LA and there was an accident so we got off to the old Route 66 that runs along the 15. Traffic not too bad after a jam up on the El Cajon Pass, stopped at Max’s cantina off Route 66, Mark like to eat there and it really is great Mexican food and drink. It happened to be Cinco de Mayo and we sat down in the bar as Mark likes it there and a group of at least 5 bikers from the Mongrels gang (with their colors on) came in with their women and they made more noise than you could possibly believe screaming and hooting and hollering drinking and having a great time. I had coffee. We all had a great time on our trip, and I want to thank everyone who came to this great event and a special thank you to JP our fearless leader.
Also note that Max's Mexican Cuisine in Azusa has over 5,000 in one-dollar notes written on the walls of there bar. Address: 635 N Azusa Ave, Azusa, CA 91702

Great talking to you both, too, Paul! I'd love to have IPAs with you and Pam.
Mike says tank slapper - my description is more like several fishtails in the middle of I-70 on Vail Pass when Mike almost managed to pull it out with some pretty spectacular driving, but ended up doing a 360 and smacked into the median, stopping with the car in the middle of the highway with my door facing the flow of traffic. Mike got the car re-started and out of the way of traffic cool as a cucumber, and kept right on driving. Luckily I had extra undies in my suitcase.

Glad you two made it home safe. Sounds like a high blood pressure moment for sure.

Thanks to everyone(Especially John) for a great weekend.
We made it home Sunday evening after the 914 died on I-40 eastbound due to a wire coming loose from the coil and then the linkage pin worked it's way loose on the shift linkage behind the firewall.

Email your pictures here: r66@914world.com

- Put something meaningful in the subject line of the email
- Any text in the email body is ignored
- Make sure your images aren't too large, 1080 is plenty for a website
- Don't use Apple's proprietary image format, it won't work here. Use JPG instead.
