Hi All, New 914 owner here. I took my engine out to address some oil leaks. Any idea what this secondary pulley off the impeller is? Thanks!

Air pump for smog, you can remove it.

Believe that was a 1975-76 model year thing.

Be careful with that!

If it's in good shape you might save another member "California Emissions Heartache".

I cannot stand air pumps but for some it's a registration requirement.

Don't throw it away!

If you just want to trash it put it in the classifieds "for shipping".

You'll make someone's day!

The entire fan housing is also special as it has additional mounts for the air pump.

A non-air pump fan housing looks better IMO.

Non-air pump housings are FAR more common.

You do not need this in Illionois. (maybe, not sure about emissions requirements for old cars there).

The non-emission fan housing looks better, allows installation of a debris screen for the fan, and is generally easier to work on (less shit in the way).

Both the fan housing and the front hub extension/drive set up currently installed could be critically valuable to another member who lives in Calf...

Also potentially helpful if you ever wanted to add AC later. There have been some threads here discussing a similar setup. it. It you wanted to get rid of it, I'd be interested in that setup for that reason (possible AC install).

When the smog pump freezes. That sacrificial rubber sacrificial rubber dies. And then that piece is totally worthless. So, they are needed if In decent shape. And they cost a bit of bread. I think I sold my last one for a couple of hundred bucks. The do not make them.

Oops, I didn't even think about the AC application to the drive, and I should have...

I run an Automotive AC specialist shop and am going to design a mount for a modern compressor. Mine will be on the passenger's side, under the tin (if possible).
I haven't built this yet and, in another thread, I've already made the statement "Sanden top mount driven by the front pulley is the easiest, most robust mounting system I've seen..."

So, HELL YES save that stuff for a possible top mount!

I'll never suggest throwing that away again guys!

My myopic ideas blinded me to the obvious, BAD NINJA!

The air pump capable fan housing gives you better mounting points as well!
