We are watching the start of the Rolex 24, and this came on screen:



All you 914 race historians.... what year, what team, and what drivers were in this 914-6 GT?

This was during the Sam Posey narrated feature. Might be able to look for that. Something like "what will happen in 24 hours."

It appears to be in the 1976 Daytona 24 run by Spirit Racing. It's the only time I can find that a 914 had #54.

doesn't flip up a photo of car for daytona entry.


but if you keep checking the three drivers - steve southard keeps popping up elsewhere in a 914/6




and eventually a car photo.
fairly likely its the same car in later livery.
front spoiler seems to be same as the video still mr. p posted.

Good call on the IMSA GTU thread on here! That had somehow escaped my memory.

We should really make an effort to get that race history, especially the lesser known privateer stories, recorded in an accessible way for future generations.

How did you remember that?

And, more importantly, how long did it take you to find it once you saw it again here?

i didn't remember it. i wasn't a member.
i'm not a rainman. (but i take it as a compliment! )
i am trained to research.
its not hard.

google image is my secret when it comes to some car stuff.
very effective.
apart from that though i might look like a mad scientist i am actually a fulbright scholar.
(so maybe i am a mad scientist. )
thats how i got to the USA back in the late 80s and.............ended up with a 914.
but thats another story.

you want something researched i can often find it pretty quick.
beats the old days of crawling around library shelves which is what i once used to do.

but i tell you what.
i would love to be let loose in the VW archives.
i reckon i could find all sorts of stuff in there about the 914 that would go further than a trawl through the porsche archives. who knows if i ever get to retire i might get to do it.

i'd love to go to germany. i have german ancestors. they came to australia in the late 19th century and settled in a place called Sarina in far north queensland. where there actually are crocodiles. they were all fishermen.

clay perrine already knew the answer to this one before he posted it up.

I know Steve Southard. Lives in the Columbus, Ohio area and is a member of the Mid Ohio region of PCA. He now owns a Factory 914-6. A development Mule from the factory. The car is sweet !!!!

from what i could tell on the internet search trail that looped right back into this website that the car mr. southard has now is still the same car.
could be wrong.
looks like he has returned it to a state much as it was in 1972.
rear flairs and slightly flared front guards and red in color.
neat car with a LOT of great history.

edit.
i checked the photos on the pbase GT website.
its been returned to its original red color.
but retains the full flares all round and cage frame chassis.

it was red when it ran at sebring in 1972.
with only rear flares and slightly flared front guards.

My Book on IMSA 914s is in the works, I have been collecting pictures that have never been published for about 10 years now. I have found all but 5 of the cars.

Was nice to have something done by Sam as he has had some serious health issues over the last few years...

(also nice to see a 914- was lucky to do a couple laps as a passenger way back in the early '70's in a 914-6 and got to join the "100mph club"... the feeling on the banking was very strange to say the least!)

Congrats for the find. I was watching the broadcast and just about fell out of my chair when I saw the Posey piece.

That was my car in 1976 at the 24. Alex Job and Hal Shalman were my co-drivers. We had a deal with Goodyear and ran street tires for the race. We were the only car on the original tires when it started to rain. Goodyear wouldn't let change as they wanted one car to remain on the original set. The other two cars running the street tires were 911's and they had changed tires earlier in the race.

i was reading your posts in the topic i linked to on page 1 of this thread.

you had this photo of your car captioned daytona 1972.



got curious and started digging to see what i could find.

it ran in the sebring 12 hours 1973 going on what i found.






another image came up in the search captioned daytona 1973



but when i looked into 73 results couldnt find it.
dug in further using the name of the drivers (owner?) at sebring 73.
David White and David McClain.
if they stayed with the car from 72 to 73 then possibly its this car.
and this is how it looked in 72 when it ran the Daytona 3 hour.
if it is the same car it was white and running #19 that year.





learned all sorts of things i didn't know doing this search.
1972 daytona 24 hour did not run due to some reasons.
instead was split into two races. a 6 hour race and a 3 hour race.
then in 1974 it was cancelled completely due to energy crisis.

on the way to finding images of the 914/6 GT above of @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=19420 .
i fell into the usual distractions.

found some cool footage of sebring in 1972 that was home shot super 8 or maybe 16mm.
brief footage of 914/6 #70 in the pits.




then stumbled across footage of daytona 12 hr in 68.
and got mystified by the night footage.
907s running at night.




given that these things had near transparent body work without the paint i thought at first they were leaving the paint off in a circle on the doors and shining an interior light through it to illuminate the race number at night.

some of you likely know about this detail but i did not.
got curious.

daytime shot of 907 showed it had the little side light for number illumination.



finally got the answer. le mans footage from 68.
porsche were using luminescent paint in a circle around the race number.



i never knew this. super f'n stylish. far as i could figure out this was not a common feature of other cars at the time.
