914World.com _ 914World Garage _ How far are you from

Posted by: Racer Chris Aug 22 2005, 05:46 AM

Last night I drew circles around Mid-Ohio on a map.

Cities within about 150 - 200 miles include:
Indianapolis and South Bend Indiana
Lansing, Saginaw, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids Michigan
Charleston West Virginia
Erie Pennsylvania
Jamestown New York
London Ontario

A little closer are:
Detroit
Fort Wayne
Cincinnati, Dayton
Pittsburgh

Just a little farther are:
Grand Rapids
Louisville and Lexington Kentucky
Winchester Virginia
Altoona and State College PA
Buffalo New York

My drive is about 750 miles each way. How far are you?

Posted by: tdgray Aug 22 2005, 05:51 AM

According to Mapquest--- > 81.65 Miles ; 1 hour 33 minutes.

But not an hour 33 the way I drive biggrin.gif

Yahoo directions tells me that it is 550 miles from my place to Mid-Ohio. I didn't realize that your place was 200 miles away from me. smile.gif

Maybe it's closer to 650. I take the northern route on I90 which is a much smoother drive but not as direct.

I think I'm a long distance from Ohio. I'm amazed at that anyone makes the drive to the Runoffs from the west coast.
Next year it will be in Kansas but if gas prices keep going up I won't be going there. sad.gif

For me... it's like 170 miles door to door. I can make it in under 3 hours towing if I don't futz around too much.

I'm not happy about the move to KS either.

Too bad they don't hold them at Road Atlanta any longer..... Its 40 minutes from here to there..

Its looking like I'll be shooting up there with Len as a co-pilot in the 3 Liter powered Beetle... When I get back from the trip it'll have enough miles on it to be torn down for the big inspection..

Jake are you guys getting a hotel room? I may be camping at the track if that is allowed.

Looks like it is 550 miles.

How many days are you guys planning on staying? All 6?

There is a camping area. The fee is $25.
There is no camping in the paddock.
Only motor homes are allowed for staying overnight in the paddock.
Good luck finding a motel room within a reasonable distance.

There are 2 camp grounds at the track, 1 for workers, and 1 for general public. From the Key hole all the way down the straightaway, that field is for camping.
Do we need the 20x20 tent now or in the future, I'd conceder buying if for the 914club if it would be used, and taken care of.

I've been out of the loop for a little while, Explain :

Brad's in 911 heaven. I doubt they'll let him come to Ohio.

There are still hotels available... but you'll have a longer drive.

The drive from most of the hotels in the area is ~20 minutes.

I just reserved a hotel for Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Marion, which is about a 40 minute drive to the track.

Bucyrus has a cheap hotel.... 35 minutes
Upper Sandusky also has an assortment of hotels.... 45-50 minutes

He took a job in San Diego at Mind Over Motorsports.
It's keeping him very busy right now.
And he has a lot of catching up to do, with regard to his financial condition.

Those of us not on the right side are likin it. biggrin.gif

Honestly though, I think it's probably the best overall compromise. That drive from the west coast has got to be a bitch! sad.gif

One of our F Prod 914 racers is towing from California.
He already raced once at Mid-Ohio earlier this year.

If I finish well, the drive to Mid Ohio is very short about 13 hours. If I finish poorly, the drive is 25 hours and long as hell, uphill with 8 inches of snow getting stuck every 2 miles, dealing with the yappy girlfriends dog and the yappy girl friend (this IS hypothetical) with a radio that stopped playing when I left the driveway and an oil leak that fills the cabin with smoke. Thats how long.2

Now seriously:

The Reason Chris is asking is to find someone that would be intertested in covering the event for the club.
Of all of the Runoffs stuff were doing this is the MACDADDY of positions needed. Not to slight anyone who has donated, you are very much appreciated. The position as (I'm gonna name it) BLOG DADDY will be of vital importance please see the new thread I have wirtten on this subject.

Erik Madsen

Post Script: Thanks to all of you that have supported the 914 club Runoffs competitors.

The other reason I started this topic was to convince people they are not too far away to come out for the races.
Plan on staying overnight so you get to see the E Prod race Saturday afternoon, have a barbeque Saturday evening and breakfast Sunday before the F Prod race in the late morning.
This will be a real 914club event. beerchug.gif
