914World.com _ 914World Garage _ How do I wire a '71-73 911 turn signal switch into '71 914 harness

Posted by: morehills Apr 4 2024, 06:11 AM

Now that the structural changes are done on my GT interior, I'm moving on to wire in the turn signal, ignition and wiper switches. It makes my brain ache to study the wiring diagrams from my '71 914 (early 12 pin harness), and the 1971 911 and 914-6 diagrams. Differences between them all and I'm a less than proficient electrician.

Here's a chart I made for the turn signal and ignition connections (thanks to Jeff Bowlsby, Clay Perrine and Tom Butler for groundwork posts and advice):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HvkK6L1TYXoc_pCc-ydJ9XiUzUP-faIdg4YoU7TFhpE/edit?usp=sharing

My biggest remaining questions go to a couple wires from the 911 turn signal harness that run outside the 914 12 pin connector.

I've labeled them in the chart above as position 15 and 16 (on the right). 15 is a red/white wire which runs from the switch bundled with the parking light wires, and from the 911 diagram it appears to be always on power connecting to the light switch. And 16 is a black wire coming back from the 6 prong plug. Can anyone confirm how they are used?

I'd be very appreciative of anyone who has put a 911 column in an early car helping me out. Am I on the right track or just smoking it?

Thank you,

John

Are all the 914 connections made in a logical fashion? Your Excel file is a wee bit difficult to easily grasp. If so, then ignore the left over wires from the 911 switch. Maybe this is a super stupid suggestion.

I think tge 924/944 turn signal switch is a minor change over

Fabulous work Ken. I will start working with it this weekend and let you know if I run into any problems. This will be a huge aid to anyone doing a similar conversion. Thank you, John

Ken or perhaps others may have a thought on my final remaining wiring problem.

Everything works but my Hi/Low headlight beam switch. I think the high beams are engaged all the time. The switch is new and working properly.

I made a little video of the problem.

https://youtu.be/HFq81Gj-N8g?si=3rLewUQjYpVnPbzO

Perhaps this is related to the white/black SW56 wire that connected from signal control to position 56 on the light switch? When I connect that I get a loud buzz. I think it's coming from the headlight motor relay. I should add when I have the lights up it does not buzz. I've read somewhere else that the 914 flasher circuit cannot be used with the 911 switch, so I'm fine wiring this into my fog lights instead. But is it causing the hi/low beam problem.

Does anyone understand this circuit who can help me chase the wiring to make sure I've connected things properly?

Thanks so much. Frustrating as I'm almost there.

Best,

John

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=27202 here is the updated schematic drawing for your record that reflects revisions made to the high beam turn-on activation and high beam flash activation wires needed for the combination relay coil ground terminal.

Fantastic Ken. Everything works properly now and I can finish up the dash. I couldn't have done it without you. John

Thanks,

That is one cool and complete diagram. I wish I had it for reference earlier this year when I did my install of 911 ignition, T/S and wiper switches on my -6 GT conversion project.

by buying a new bulkhead plug, soldering the pins and then installing it. We do it here all of the time
