914World.com _ 914World Garage _ what in the world is my rattle

Posted by: bd1308 Aug 24 2005, 12:29 PM

not dizzy, not pre-ignition....(present in all extremes of timing)

what in the world could this be?

did i snap a piston ring or something, is it piston slap, engine ticking until it goes KABLOOM or what?

sounds like someone put a nut in the fan and its goign clak clak somewhere...under moderate acceleration..

seems vibration related really, as when i first let out on the clutch i hear it for a second.

this may seem whacked, but check the brake lines at the firewall where the perportioning valve is. I had one line that vibrated against the firewall at certain RPMS and load conditions and made a sound like you are describing.

That happened to me too - wink.gif
I removed my wife from the trunk & the strange noise stopped.

maybe you are running too lean from feeding your engine through a fucking straw... smile.gif

is there a "pinging" sound? loose valves? when was your last valve adjust? did your VW mecahinc friend do it? rolleyes.gif i HIGHLY DOUBT you sontaneously dropped a piston ring or a wrist pin... but with you, who knows?

did you do a compression check? do you know HOW to do a compression check?

help us out here... we can't heard it over the net through your post...

or take it to a real mechanic that KNOWS type 4s... not just type 1s

Posted by: bd1308 Aug 24 2005, 12:43 PM

that's what i'm doing. i'm finished messing with the dumb car....

Posted by: scott thacher Aug 24 2005, 12:44 PM

check you engine and tranny mounts, and while under there take a small rubber hammer and hit the tins, HE, every thing that can move or viberate. does the sound come from the middle of the car, back ???. i wonder if your throw out bearing is going bad ie, the sound when you let off the clutch

Posted by: tat2dphreak Aug 24 2005, 12:46 PM

it could be 1000 things with the descriptions used... things do get loose on 30+ year old cars...

Posted by: bd1308 Aug 24 2005, 12:47 PM

engine mounts are okay---

one tranny mount was kinda ugly...but still held.

i hear ya, i know i'm being stupid here by asking what a rattle sound is....

i'll just take it to the mechanic, the porsche one.

naw, this guy is good.

he's kinda far away, but he AX'd 914s in the 70s and 80s....

he has a 914/6

he's done many restorations on 914s, complete tear-downs and what-have-you.
