914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914s AT HERSHEY PORSCHE PARADE 2005

Posted by: BEE DRIVEN Aug 30 2005, 07:27 PM

The 50th Porsche Parade 2005 at Hershey, was the largest event of Porsches I've been to. I realized that no matter how car,or Porsche crazy I am, it's possible to burnout from Porsche overload. I did manage to photograph enough 914s to make this topic worth viewing. I ask anyone with photos of this event to please post them.
I will start with some of the vintage race 914s that were on display, starting with this 1971 914-6GT Daytona winner.

I spent most of my time in the non-concours parking display of every model porsche. I have some awesome photos of the Yellow Carrera GT. I guess I'll post the 914s first, and than some of the others, but keep the photos coming it's good to see other photos of the show. beerchug.gif biggrin.gif

Those cars ran Minilites way back in 1971 and 72. They're orginal to the look.

The Max Moritz car (that's the green one) ran Fuchs up front and Minilites in the back for at least one race. The car was restored to the condition that it ran that (those) race(s) in. Which means it has mis-matched wheels.

I think Pano just did another article on this car in the last couple of months.

The Max Moritz car belongs to Steve Limbert of Air Cooled Racing in Wellsville, PA. Until recently he also owned a Jennings 911.

The blue # 78 is owned and driven by Les Handley in FP in SCCA. Always makes the Runoffs.

Posted by: type47 Aug 31 2005, 12:00 PM

the yellow sunoco #5 is also a real Gt formerly (maybe presently) owned by gary wigglesworth from york PA. i saw the car often at summit point and at the hershey swap meets, have some pix of it on the track and at the swap meet, always a car of interest. something like a sebring winner or class winner but a real GT nonetheless.

If Porsche had developed the 914 the way they developed the 911, that might be the result: 911 3.2 liter Carrera engine, 245 and 285 tires, 996 TT brakes and Boxster S 6-speed transmission.

As you might imagine, goes, stops and corners like a dream. And here's something you never hear from a 914 driver: shifts like a dream, too! rolleyes.gif

I think we need a owner of a concours quality 914,or 914-6 to answer the cost of buying one. Prices listed in the mags are a guide line, but when it comes to concours or almost concours condition,it depends on how much you really want that car. I don't think anyone one will just let their car go for $7,000,you may be looking at twice the amount or more. The cars at these shows are the best around, and not too many of them look or drive like them, so when you think about it they're few to go around. You have to also think about what you could buy at that price new.

Posted by: Dave_Darling Sep 1 2005, 11:38 AM

About six or eight years ago, now, a local guy sold his consours-winning ultra-cherry silver 73 1.7 for right around $15,000. I doubt prices have dropped since then...

The non-concours parking area had some awesome Porsches parked there. This was the first area of the show where I started to photograph the cars. I quess it was the yellow Carrera GT that pulled me in that area, along with the early 911s ,912s, 356s,and the 914s. Nick,
You should recognize the canary yellow 914/6 that sat next to the adriatic blue 914/6 in your pics. The blue car took 1st place in 914/6 Restoration Touring class and was trailered in. However, the yellow 914/6 belongs to BS Chairman, is a daily driver and was driven 8 hours from Michigan to the Parade. It took 2nd place at Parade and was 1st Place at the MWC 2005. Congrats Gary on a beautifully maintained daily driver. No CW there!

I am sorry,I just checked, and I did not have any. I can't tell you why I did not photograph certain cars, but being there is like being a kid in a candystore, and not knowing what you want. Just too many Porsches to see in one day. I am hoping someone viewing this site might have photos to post that I missed. I know there were alot people with cameras so if you have them lets see them.

You've given us plenty of eye candy already all your pictures are super.
Im trying to decide if I should keep my car black or change it back to the original signal orange.

Well I have the LE BUMBLEBEE ,and you may agree that black is the most difficult to wax. Now the yellow areas of my 914 are very easy to wax and keep clean. The black paint back in the 1970's seems to be darker than the Porsches of today. I notice this a couple of weeks ago at our porsche picnic when I was parked between two other black 911's Signal orange is a awesome color, and they photo great in pictures. The photo below is my car at the porsche picnic two weeks ago. In person the black is black, like a deepblack. Ok maybe you get the point. What ever color you pick ,you can't loss.

These following photos were taken on saturday, the day before the concours. They show the hard work all the owners went through to prep their cars for the concours on sunday. It could have not been easy for them with the temps at 95 or plus degrees ,and cleaning the cars in the parking lot of the Hershey Lodge. So there's a big THANK YOU TO ALL THE OWNERS!!

The #59 Phoenix Red car is owned by myself, my father, and my two sons. All four of us share expenses, and driving. We autocross and do PCa DE's with the car. It has been built with the intention of club racing.

All of the work (even paint) is our own except the cage which was done by Steve Limbert at Air cooled racing. The car was purchased from Steve in 2003. It was AXed with success in the Philadelphia area in the 80's by a previous owner.

Current engine is a carbed 2069 four. Fenders, hood and deck lid are glass as are the bumpers. Note seen is a ATL cell and Oberg filter. Plans are to do six conversion when we can find a 3.0L we can afford.

Car has been built to closely duplicate the Brumos IMSA car of the 70's. Until just before the Parade, it even had Brumos windshield banner. The original said "Built in Jacksonville" on the rear.

Thanks for the kind words and the photos.

The 914-6 from Maine is an original Swiss registry 914-6 that was brought into the states in '85. I've attempted to keep it as original as possible with limited mods. Re-paint of the front hood as the prior owner added a badge that did not appear on the original, left door jamb as it had a few deep scratches from what I don't know. Added Bilsteins and drilled rotors front and back (originals were not serviceable). Replaced the rear fog with what Porsche said was a superceded model. I'm still searching for a good period original. The original one with the car has shattered lense, and interior reflected was tarnished beyond repair. The superceded model's housing appears correct, however the lense has a slight different profile where it meets the housing. I can't swear that it is original to the car as it does not appear on the Certificate of Authenticity, unless it is covered by the "Switzerland Equipment" option.

Engine upgrade has been limited to chain tensioner update and lower valve covers. Turned 100,000km in route to the Parade.

I was too timid (or wise?) to enter the Concours.

Posted by: Jasfsmith Sep 7 2005, 11:08 AM

BTW, the color of the 914-6 of Swiss registry is "Blutorange". Sure looks like the standard Tangerine, however it does not carry the same color label (i.e. L21). It is definitely brighter than my plain jane Signal Orange 914-4.

Posted by: smg914 Sep 7 2005, 03:05 PM

I wonder if "blutorange" translates to "blood orange" paint number 23.

Ed V's was verified but as much as I kept up with the process when it was being processed and then turbo powered I would have to be blind not to know that dream 914. I am thinking I saw John Dunkle's white 6 transformation there too but it had Colorado plates. Seems like I spotted Alan Letts near a green 914 dream. Was that yours Alan?

This is a 1966 906,I could not read the history on this one, but I did get Jerry Seinfeld in the background with the blue cap. At the time I did not know Seinfeld was there, because I was too busy getting the photos. Three days later at work going through the images on my computer showing the show to other designers ,I notice him right away. The funny thing is my friend ,and I were talking as we 're driving back home to Michigan...You think ,you would have seen someone like Jerry Seinfeld at a Porsche event like that one.

The 904 was originally designed to use the six-cylinder motor out of the upcoming 901 road car--or a version of it, at any rate. However, they couldn't get the racing versions done in time, so the car debuted with an uprated version of the venerable Fuhrmann four-cam four-cylinder motor. Eventually, the Sixes were ready, and they were used in the later 904s. Most of the time, the later ones are called "904-6", though some early literature called them "906".

There was, however, an actual 906 race car made a couple of years later. It was also known as the "Carrera 6". The body was very different from the 904, and much more reminiscent of the 907 and 910 cars that came later.

Hey Nick,

Beautiful shots of the 904. A few years ago (1998) I had the opportunity to park next to a local (MI) 904 at Meadowbrook. It's the 6-cyl model 904. The owner still owns it and has owned it over 30 years. Great guy and a real piece of history. I just wish at the time I realized what I was looking at. I would have taken more pictures along side my car. O'well I didn't know what an important car it was back then. I sure like the 904, my car if I hit the lotto.

Hi Tom, this saturday I will be going to the Old Car Festival at Greenfield Village. Tom you should go to Stuart Tool on Maple Rd. just west of I-75. It is like a Porsche meet every saturday on the outside, and inside of the shop. Here's a photo below to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. My favorite, FORD 39 Street Rod. I used to own a 39 conv. cpe & this one got the juices flowing.
Notice. It has a 40 std. grill & lots of minor 40 FORD add ons that only a former 39 guy would know.

Tom
My heart will always be with the Street Rods even though I love my 914.

Hi Nick (keep those pictures coming)

I don't want to highjack your posting, but I attended the Birmingham cruise-in this morning. I want to tell everyone my 914 was popular. Respect, Respect

Our little cars are very popular pray.gif There were some hi-buck cars there and everyone was treated the same.

Here's a few pictures.

Tom

Hey Tom,if you are out there your 914 would look great anywhere you take it. I see two porsche guys in the first photo standing by the wall, blue shirt with hat, and the other one next to him. Tom did you check out the store for diecast models? I might have to go there one saturday before the porsche club toolshop.

your pictures are GREEAT!- Look at that 917 you just posted. The curve around the rear spoiler and the CGT(?) or GT-2 in the reflection. And the cars are just beyond, well, beyond comprehension. Look at the Donahue car- those winglets at the front- and those engine pictures are T-riffic too. I like the turbos on the 917. Thanks! Keep 'em coming if you have the chance!

It's hard to say what the painted surfaces looked like back in the 1970's,but what is missing is all the tape that was used around the headlamps, and some of the parting lines between panels. We all know that at the end of a race the cars were pretty beat-up from paint to mechanicals. I've always liked the 917 long-tail Hippie car,I wish that one would have been there.

the 804 Dan Gurney racer was so cool. It really looked like Dan just stepped out. Some of the cars there were fabulously clean, but the 804 wasn't. It had war wounds and a patina of use, like a great old watch. Every mark was a story I could only imagine.

Hi Tom,
I see you are working on posting nicer photos. Looking at the photo you posted, the size is good, maybe you need to save your image at a higher quality. This website will allow the image to be as hi as 395 KB, just as long as you are below 400 KB. Sometimes you need to make the image smaller in size to get a better quality image, another way to get there is cropping some of the image top to bottom. Take care in hue/saturation ,some photos or colors do not need much adjustment. Keep trying you are almost there.

You're quite right about it being a hillclimber-that's the 904 Bergspyder. Based on the 904's mechanicals, but with a rather different chassis and body as you can see. Very light weight, did quite well in hillclimb events.

There's something great about a silver 356 with racing graphics that separates it from the rest of the field.

This Porsche super-car the Carrera GT was the first porsche I started to photograph at the Parade Concours. This beauty was parking in the non-concours area as the photos will show.

The Carrera GT's power plant. Porsche needs to do more of this with the other Porsche model line-up. The engine is a work of art.

This interior is special in everyway,it lets you know you have something not from the norm...Not your average sports car interior. Everything on this super Porsche is setting the bar higher on design, and engineering. This production model is way better than the concept model of this car. I see the show concept model every week at Porsche Engineering, and Porsche managed to be better in production.
