914World.com _ 914World Garage _ pressure plate guide pins

Posted by: ehick72 Sep 5 2005, 09:20 AM

I am doing a clutch replacement and I'm trying to get the pressure plate guide pins from the old flywheel to put in my new one. Any Ideas on how to do this?

Yep, the holes those mount in go all the way through. Push them out from behind. wink.gif

Ok broke a screwdrive and bent a punch. I noticed looking in the new one there is some kind of lip down inside the hole if you look at it from behind. What do one of these pins look like out of the flywheel. are they just straight pins.

Yep, the top looks like the bottom. And the bottom looks like the top.

Cheapo punch won't work on this one.

I made my punch out of an old zip gun (air-hammer) chisel and use it in the zip gun...bit easier. wink.gif

Take it to a machine shop if you can't get it...I take it that you are taking them off to resurface the flywheel anyways??

Throw a tad of heat around the pins and they'll remove much easier..

Actually I bought a brand new one. If the old one didn't need resurfacing before it definitely needs it now. I have pounded the s---t out of this thing with everything in the garage. Including a 16lb sledge hammer and a 45 lb olympic bar from my gym. I was thinking of using heat but I was a little unsure. I guess I will try that next.

I will let yall know the outcome. Why can't pelican just send some with the kit. I am going to write them about this.

Update on the pins: After sledge hammer, Heat, and other techniques like throwing it high in the air with a pin in the back of it so it lands on the pin (very tricky maneuver BTW). The pins would not move. So I went to local VW junkyard and purchase three pins for $5.

The ones I got from the junkyard were after market. They're hollow and probably come out much easier. So at least now I can continue with the clutch replacement.

When I get some time I am going to take the old flywheel to a machine shop and see what they do to get those things out. Not that I need them anymore but it's become and obssession now!

The roll pins aren't aftermarket, they're VW OE. I have yet to see 914 FW pins trhat won't come out with a 5mm punch and a BFH. The Cap'n
