Took the 914 powered 356 up to Solvang over the weekend. Going up a hill it started pinging......I'm running Super, or what CA calls 91 octane. I'm thinking that the 009 that's in there is junk.
So, I'm looking for suggestions and a 050 dizzy if anyone has one laying around. This motor was Chris C's old motor before he went with the /6 in hos race car. Pulls like a tractor up to 5K then runs out of steam.....more advance than the 009 can give?
somebody posted the stock dizzy specks here or on the bird board.
i would put a stock teener or vw 205 if you can find one.
run a tank of octane boost (if you can buy it in ca) and see if it goes away.
Hi Mike,
Even without hooking up the vaucum any stock distributor will work better than a 009 or an 050. I've boughr and run them all. I run dells so I have an port to supply advance, but even if you are running older webers, you can mod them to supply vacuum for advance.
In this order.
Mallory if you want to spend $250+.
VW svda
1.8
any other stock distibutor.
Carlos
More advance is NOT the answer if you are pinging !!!!!
I meant to say.....More range is what I need.....
Ready for what I think ??
Your cooling system sucks.
Why did it work ok in Chris' car ??
The only thing you changed was the cooling system..

You prolly won't like my "solution" (I never got around to swapping the dizzy). I blended 91+100oct gas, or sometimes ran straight 100 since it is so hot around here. Keep in mind the C/R on that motor is slightly bumped too; it's 8.6:1 IIRC. Have you double-checked the timing?
Bite me Brad....how does my cooling system suck? It does the job......it keeps the head temp below 300 F.
I have a bigger bore 2.4 that runs hot and I have an external cooler for that....runs at 190-210F oil temp.
I was not willing to spend three times the amount for a FAT cooler shroud and get less cfm across the heads. As a bonus the GM alternator also puts out more amps.
Seems to work for me.
Chris....the timing seems on, just that the 009 forces me to run a bit more advanced to get more power.....and I never liked the 009s.....
mike, what is your timing @ 3000 rpm? while the 009 may have it's limitations on the bottom end you will prob have to live with it til you can make the switch. if you have "fudged" the timing, do you think that is cause of the pinging @ full mch adv? with the longer stroke, does that make the engine less willing to wind up? is the engine sim to a raby configuration? sorry for so many questions with little help.

All you may need is and additive. Not nessesarily an octaine buster but something for pinging. When leaded gas was around there wasn't that problem. Unleaded gas sucks.
The 009 is also supposedly adjustable; one can take it apart, and play with the weights and springs to get either a wider, less responsive range, or a narrower, more responsive range.
(I learned this AFTER I swapped out my 009 for a 205 - LUV my 205 on my Type 1).
I don't think Mike is saying the MAXIMUM advance is too high, it the curve that's wrong (ie advance at 3k is good, but maybe too high at say 2k). You don't fix this with gas additives or changing the angle at full advance unless you want to give up a bunch of power. Need a dizzy with proper curve.
Mike, throw a stock one in there. I don't understand why everybody ditches the stock dizzy when going to carbs. So what if it's got injector points. With all the money you are thowing at that thing you could go with a Mallory or better yet - for a couple bills you could go with a digital and program your own curve just the way you like it.
-Ben M. (digital w/ curve programmed just the way I like it)
That's just the point....I'm NOT throwing money at it. I'm doing it on the cheap with used parts and stuff sitting in my garage. I don't call it Project Frankensteen for nothing.....
The 009 besides being designed for a stationary industrial motor has VERY little advance and it was the one that came with the motor.....so I am looking to get one that I can tweek and get the most out of the power band on all sides....low end and upper end.....
Then rig up a pully to the distributor body, run a belt through a hole in the firewall, and the other end up to a wheel and a crank on the console. Adjust timing manually as you drive. Like the good 'ol days.
I have a 205 and an 050 on the way, with different plugs....they are white, showing lean.
