I wanna get some opinions on axle setups for the last leg of my 6r.
The car is an original 6,but it now sports a 993 engine,and 915 gearbox.
Every system on the car is now fully functional,and is fully roadworthy.
The last item left now,is acquiring CV's and a set of conversion axles.
I'm gonna buy a pair of Empi 930 race Cv's for the trans flanges,as in the photo.And I'm gonna contact
Sway-Away to have 'm make me an axle setup.
Now for the quexchun.
What to do,with the out board cv on the wheel end?The original hub is a 914/6 unit .4 bolt setup w/a Lobro cv.
Some recent discussion involved using 944 flanges wjich would upgrade to the 911 6 bolt cv.
Should I maybe should I maybe find & Modify a better flange to fit,or is the original unit satisfactory to use,and just get a conversion axle made.

save some money and go with 944 tubo CV's....(cheap and can handle plenty o' power)
6 bolt 915 flanges > 944 CV > Stock /4 cyl Axle > 944 CV > 944 stub axle / custom 3/16th spacer > early 911 hub or 914/6 hub
then you have LARGE CV's that use 6 bolts to fasten..
My suggestion would be to use a 914/4 axle, modify one end to use the 944 CV. Then put the correct flanges into the 915.
The outboard end would use the standard 914 cv joint. The inboard would use a 944 CV joint. You don't have to mod the hubs or buy special axles for this.
sorry, can't answer - got same dilemma, but whats your shift set-up? Wevo? velios? other?

you need the 944 STUBS, because they bolt to the large diameter 6 bolt 944 CV.
the splines on late 944 or turbo stubs is the SAME as the internal splines on a /6 or early 911 HUB.
clay says you can ALSO use the 944 HUB
a spacer is needed to fill the gap where the dust seal on a 944 lived, on the stub axle.

I bought a pair of axle assemblies from him and they work great.
Do not know whether they are 944 or 911 part, but the assembly includes both cv's, the axle, and the proper outer stub axle to fit your 914-6 outer (wheel end) half.

I'm fixin to leave work for the weekend,and I'm gonna stop by the wrecking yard,and scope out the 944 for the pieces. I'll grab bolts,boots,shafts,everything.Then piddle the next month or so to make it work.
It's rough having the car needing only an axle setup to make it move.
7years of work and i'm down to this

do me a favor ron. look for some 33 spline CV's for me.... let me know they quote you...

You do NOT have to change the outboard CV if you already have a factory six stub axle. Just fit one end of a 914/4 axle with a 944 cv joint, and change the flange on the transmission.
Or.. you can put the 901 drive flange in a coarse splined 915. Then you don't have to change the axles at all.

If you aren't out trying to impress Rice-Boys with big, smokey burnouts the stock CVs will be fine. Plus, stronger CVs mean that something else will fail in the driveline. So with a 915, it will be the clutch. A 911 clutch is NOT cheap.... |
I thought I had (mostly) a good grasp of this "conversion". Except for the spacer part. Can someone elaborate? Or even *GASP* show pics?

That has nothing to do with the stub axle spacers that are needed for the bearings.

It fills the gap between the stub axle and the inner bearing race.
