has anyone ground down or even offset ground the rod journals on their crank to use other rod choices?? ive heard of rabbit and toyota rods being used in a type 4.
These SCAT scirroco rods are 299.00, and are 470 gram H beam 1.992 journal size.... not that much under a stock 2L journal...

The way I understand it. Going with a type 1 journal opens up more choices but, then you need to 22 mm wrist pins and different pistons.

you can always turn a crank journal down... but its harder to weld it up to a type 1 journal

I'm outta ideas, I wish I had the rod journal dimensions of my DPR 78 mm crank. Maybe if you ask Jake really nice he might give you an idea. Wish I could help you out with more info but I never measured that dimension. I know the rod bearings were Mahle and the box the connecting rods came in were marked T1. I also know that the crank was welded but I always assumed it was to get the extra throw but maybe they welded the journal and reground it. I don't know but, now I'm kind of curious.

This is a forged 4340 chromoly crank... pretty cool.
agreed, i WISH it had type 1 journals on it, lots of cheap rods out there.
next smallest size is t he 2" chevy. wonder if the crank could be welded up to a chevy.....
then there is the lowly 2.0l journal.... small.
but if you go a tad smaller than a 2L, you get back into VW rabbit scirocco 4340 and titanium rods cheap....

The other thing you have to worry about is clearance -Clarance....
The rod bolts can cause much fun with the 914 cam and that usually limits your rod choices quickly.
If you can pass that hurdle....

For the uninformed "Pink" rods are heavy duty SBC factory connecting rods. There are better aftermarket options, but when Don was using them there probably not the aftermarket support that there is now.
Of course you could always use the rest of the SBC parts as well.

This is a Pauter Rod it's t shaped.
The pic of the one Allen posted is how the Carrello's look to.
That's a H shape rod.
