Hey Alberto come on over. I'm sure more will show then is necessary, but that's ok. I would like the opportunity to meet some of the people on the board.
I don't think I need any tools, someone might know better. I have all the basics... I will go down and get a dolly this week, but other then that I think I'm ok. Pulled the exhaust system today, about as far as I feel real comfortable in going without some direction....

I may be able to help. I'm new to the 914's ( one month of ownership!) but I've already pulled my engine and it's not disasemmbled and waiting for all the little parts to go back it.

I may be helping a guy put a 911 engine in his 914 next weekend. If not, I'm all yours.

Advice... start soaking the CV bolts NOW. A 3 hour engine drop turned into 6+ hours of hell because of ONE STUPID BOLT!!!!

and the outboard engine mount bolts. they tend to sieze up (engine bar to body)

Posted by: trekkor Oct 2 2005, 03:25 PM

Two guys should have the engine\trans on the ground in ONE hour.

The hardest part is scotting the disconnected CV joint\axles over the top of the motor as you pull it out.

With four guys or more: light BBQ, pull motor, coals are ready, cook!

Serious...

Hi Brian,
I get home Friday night and if I'm not totally jet-lagged I'll try to be there. Remember to send your wife and kids away for the day and don't give these guys any food or beer till at least some work gets done on the car.
Cheers, Elliot

Hey Elliot,

How's things? I was a little worried about having the wife around.. My kids are already a bit mental, so I'm not to concerned.. biggrin.gif
If your up for coming over I will have a cold one for ya..

Any prefrence from you guy's on what you want to eat? ( I know this is like playing with fire), but thought I would ask.
No lobster, crab, or porter house... I was thinking burgers, chicken, sandwiches, the wife makes some killer home made burritos, marinaded beef all day long...

Posted by: Brando Oct 2 2005, 06:57 PM

Brian, sounds great!!!

We can have the motor out and on the ground in 45 mins tops. We got Aaron's out in just under 40 because his carb intakes were catching (he was only 8" off the ground) -- not counting all the other widgets we were fiddling with. (oel pump studs n stuff).

I'll bring an extra 2-ton floor jack and a creeper, and my triple-square (cheese-head). Don't forget a set of metric-hex-head sockets ranging from (at least) 6mm-10mm. 4mm-10mm preferred.

Go buy a can of PB Catalyst. Spray the engine bar mounts (you'll see them where the bar mounts to the body, by your heater flappers), spray the CV bolt mounts and also the little screws you will see in the engine bar. They've got a hex head on them, very small. Also buy a tube of Molybdenum grease (axle grease) and a box of large ziplock bags and a sharpie. You should be ready to rock beer.gif

Any other plans "while you're in there" ?

Posted by: Elliot Cannon Oct 2 2005, 08:04 PM

I saw Brians car a few weeks ago. We pulled off both rocker panels and about a pound of dirt fell out of each side but not a lot of rust. We also pulled the battery, the FI brain and I think he was going to pull the fresh air blowers. What he needs is to expose everything and take care of the rust problems. I think he needs to do a lot of work with a wire brush attachment on his drill. I also noticed the right rear donut had a crack around it. A bit more welding to do and a whole lot of cleaning. I only had an hour or so and told him what I thought and I'm sure you guys will have a lot more good suggestions for him. It seemed, with the small amount of time I had with the car that the tub is in pretty good shape for the money.
It's great to have a new member and he is just a few minutes from Lagunero and me.
Cheers, Elliot

Ok will do this week. I wanted to doas much as I could ahead of time to expedite the process. More time for beer. beerchug.gif
I didn't have anything moreplanned to do immediatley, you have the time or suggestions? Being the newbie, if you guy's think I should be doing something at the same time, I'm open for suggestions..

Posted by: Brando Oct 2 2005, 10:03 PM

Whoops... hex-head bolts I meant are in the SHIFTER bar... First one is under the boot by the trans... loosen the hose-clamp (if the clamp and boot are there). You'll see the hex head for the conical screw in there.

Second one is in the shift bar by the firewall. Pull the accordian boot over the linkage there and spray the conical screw there. You should see the hex head of the screw from the bottom.

Let it set for a few days... If we're lucky those will come out easy!!!

I guess the real experts (skline, clayton, joe) will comment if I forgot anything???

Posted by: Brad Roberts Oct 2 2005, 10:11 PM

I'm not sure if I'm going to Thunderhill this weekend or not. I know one of the race cars is going, but I may send two techs up with it and wait to go north for the Sears event in a few weeks. IF I dont go I wouldnt mind showing up to help out.

This sounds likea good time, but I can't make it.
Make sure to grab "the" cv joint tool. The "four square" thingy. If everyone brings one, you'll be sure to have one. If you don't have one, you just end up spending a bunch of money on beer and nuthin' gets done.

Ok was just sitting here thinking of a few things, perhaps I will come up with more.
The list will grow as I get further into the repairs.
Rear brake rotors, Calipers, Front trunk pan, front and rear bumpers. Prefer the style of the "75" model, I believe, I don't know if they can mount without a bunch of fab work. Need front dash, center console mounts under dash, battery tray. A welder to mount the tray as well as some minor welding repairs. There will be more... Mainly cosmetics, I'm sure there will be more mechanical parts once the engine is dropped. beerchug.gif

Posted by: Crazyhippy Oct 3 2005, 10:53 AM

Add one more to the list.
Bringing a lil floor jack, and uhhh.... well a floor jack.

These things are really easy, all the hard bolts have been covered thus far.

See everyone sat.

I'm in this for the food. I know nothing about cars.
I think Aaron is a fictional charachter of some guy named Skline.
The parts I have in my storage are for an Edsel.
I heard your cousin was hot.
My real name is Richard Simmons and I hang out at 914 events to feel important.

Hey... if you can order a battery tray from PP or HPH or wherever you can get one before Saturday..

Maybe someone will loan us a MIG and we can throw it in...

Anyone have a PORTABLE MIG 110VAC?????

Hey, bmunday,

Do you have the tools to grind and clean metal?

Do you have a compressor?

Do you have a cute neighbor chick that likes middle aged men?
(Don't even go there Slits)

Do your friends really call you Bmunday? blink.gif

See ya on Saturday... WHAT TIME BRO?

And it looks like MattR may come on down to lend some kind of wierd relational data nano scripting to your blinker fluid. He was with Albert tonight and said he might show up..

Just spoke to Skline. He might be coming also. I will let ya know whom I KNOW is coming on Friday.....

Well, my prior commitment for saturday is on. I'm helping fellow board member kdfoust install a flat six into his ride. I'm sure you guys will have enough folks to assist. I was REALLY looking froward to meeting a bunch of 914 guys. I'm on the bay window forum over at teh samba and we're all spread out across teh country. I never meet anyone... sad.gif

Not to highjack or anything thing but...It did take 3 of us 6 + hours to get the engine out. The car had to be jacked up a rediculous amount to get everything to clear. The jacking by itself took 25 minutes! We had to cut pieces of wood to put under the jack stands and stack them safely ect. It probably took a good hour to unhook everything and do the labels too. ( L-jet).

If you guys can get it out in an hour, I'd like to know your technique. granted, we had never done this before but even I was amazed at how diffecult this job was!

Posted by: skline Oct 4 2005, 09:03 AM

I am thinking that you and Kevin should come over at least to watch. If I dont have to work, I will be there. I have dropped an engine and tranny in less than an hour by myself. As the locals will tell you, I had a lot of practice. If I can get my speedo drive gear fixed in the Chalon, I may drive it down, otherwise, it will be the truck and some parts for you. I know I have a good set of rear rotors here. I also have a few jacks and stands too. Tell Kevin (Kdfoust) to wait on his car and then we will all go over to his house and help him with his car. Is he doing the 6 in his green car? I was wondering what happened to him, he used to come out to all of our runs and events. Great guy. I may be working tonight which would put me in line to work again this weekend but maybe it will be Sunday and not Saturday. We will see.

This is the second time in as many posts where the aadmin and scotty get mentioned in your post above me. Whats up dude!?! After all the things we've... done... this is what I get? Man, you're ugly.

Me and the Mexican will be there. I'll run by Kragen and get some blinker fluid on my way... I'm sure we'll need it.

NOTE TO Bmunday:

See ya on Saturday... WHAT TIME BRO?

And it looks like MattR may come on down to lend some kind of wierd relational data nano scripting to your blinker fluid. He was with Albert tonight and said he might show up..

Just spoke to Skline. He might be coming also. I will let ya know whom I KNOW is coming on Friday.....

LateRZzzzz.

Twystd1

Ok first and foremost. You hear my cousin was hot?????? Did I miss the buss on that one? biggrin.gif You guy's are begining to scare me. Maybe I should tell the wife to gather the dogs and leave for the day...

I don't have a compressor unfortunatley.. Don't have a grinder. Limited to a couple of sanders. I guess I need to invest some cash in tools.. Try to convince the wife of that..
My real name is Brian Munday, bmunday is a bit of a lame screen name I know, but I lack creativity some times.
I was hoping to start between 9:00-10:00 is that to early? I didn't want to take everyones Saturday if they had other things to do. Earlier the better, more time for food drink and socializing. No hot neighbor chicks sorry.... Married mid life.
I don't know JACK about cars, just the basics, but love this car.
No friends call me Bri or "B".

Richard you going to do anther exercise video? You know Leisure World is close by maybe you can drop by for a autograph session... The Blue hairs love you... biggrin.gif

Shit I don't know... I need some feedback on prepping for paint. THetcar seems to have about 3-4 coats of paint onit. I think to get a nice finish it should be taken down to bare metal... I'm sure I have pelenty to dobefore I get that far though. Fuel ines, brake lines, etc. I'm sure those need to be replaced.. I am very open to suggestions. Ok, Ok, Ok, It's fixable... By anyone other than me. I just talk and act interested.

Looks like if Skline can show up he can give ya some pointers on the rust repair.

Skline IS the real deal.. He welds up and fixes stuff I woulda trashed or given up on.
And it looks spot on.. (unless Aaron helps)

Looks like a good time. Sounds like 10 guys will be there.

Lets see... At 1.5 Lbs of steak per 10 guys. Plus bri's family.. Hmmm That equals 49 Lbs of Prime Steaks. Plus .. Let's see.. 10 guys times 30 beers equals 300 beers plus Bri's family equals 534 beers and two bottles of water for me.....

Dude... you should get this engine pulled for a little under a grand..!!!!

Crap I forgot about the potato salad... Make that a bit over a grand.

The rust in the engine compartment really isn't that bad. Well I don't think so... THe holes are actually smaller then they appear. The rotos are nothing. Need replacement, just thought it was funny how bad they appear.

Hey Scott. Kevin here. Yup, 3.2-6 into the green car. The engine is here. No f'n waiting on this -6 conversion. I've been messing around with engines for this car too long already. I already got the crew lined up. Three of "the crew," will kick my a** if I don't get this engine in the car post-haste!

See ya Saturday..

Sounds good see you then.
1.8 at this point I'm just puling the motor for general maint. Hoses, gaskets, plugs wires, cleaning etc. Who knows maybe someone will have some advice after it's out. I really don't want to spend a great deal of cashon it at this time, but I want to do what I can to get a little more life out of it.
Well based on what I have seen, and being a newbie isn't saying much, it appears I might need the whole thing.... At the very least the muffler itself....
I will have to take some time and strip it down before painting. I lost count of the number of coats of paint on the thing.
Hey Matt I have kids in the neighborhood, don't scare them off. I don't know if I have enough cash for all the therapy.... biggrin.gif

Hey Scott thanks. glad to have you. ALberto said he will stop by Friday night to see if I'm missing anything so that were not short handed on tools.
Spunone was nice enough to offer me some sheetmetal, but I need to know today if I need it. As I said previously my front trunk pan is wasted and I was looking for a doner. I'm wondering if I should just have some sheet metal cut and placed, or if I would be better off finding a doner? Anyone have any suggestions?
I think Aaron said he would bring a welder, I don't recall who it was off hand to be honest. I just need to go down and buy a dolly, will do that tonight or tomorrow..

Saturday October 8th.
I screwed up initially when posted. I listed Sunday but put the 8th down for the date. Brando caught it and I corrected it.

Cool, I am almost positive I wont be working on Saturday, Matt sent me a PM asking if I could pick him up on my way down so that will most likely be happening also. I will bring those rotors with me and if you can think of anything else you might need that I may have here list it here and I will see what I can do.

Hey Scott. Kevin here. Yup, 3.2-6 into the green car. The engine is here. No f'n waiting on this -6 conversion. I've been messing around with engines for this car too long already. I already got the crew lined up. Three of "the crew," will kick my a** if I don't get this engine in the car post-haste!

I've never dropped an engine but hope to do it someday. I'd love to hang out and watch how it’s done. Plus, how often you get so many 914 experts in one place within driving distance?
I've had idle problems, the hoses on my deceleration valve keep collapsing, and I think she runs hot. It's been a while since I felt comfortable driving more than 30 miles from home. For this, I’ll push it. I'm hoping with this many eyes and ears someone may be able to steer me in the right direction.
I promise not to be needy newbie, and I'll bring beer.
I totally understand if you’re full. If so, I'll catch the next one.
Let me know.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Just go, already!
There's gonna be so many people standing around (drinking your beer) it won't be funny!
There's only room for three or four around the "patient" the others may as well help you with your problem!! beerchug.gif

Grab a thermostat on your way over and make sure to take pictures!

Crappy news... I got the walk-through on my apartment tomorrow at 9AM; I have to be there at 8AM just to throw the remaining furniture away. I hopefully will be there before 11AM, sans Rhonda. But with Toast, Clayton's friend (forgot her name) and Aaron+Matt, 3 pairs of boobs should be plenty. laugh.gif

Brad and I left at about 9:00 PM.... we closed up shop and took off home...

I just have to thank to Bmunday for the eats and the good times. Dude.. you have an absolutely incredible family. Good Kids, Wonderful wife (and cute!!), plus a sombitch of a 914.....

Bri, you and your teener were the catalyst of many fun things today.

This was one of the best times I have had with the SoCal Contingent.

Was fun to meet the Bradster and find out he is even uglier than what Aaron said.

Saw Elliot Cannon actually get dirty when he accidently touched a wrench wink.gif

Saw Skline half fall asleep through the madness. yawn.gif

Saw MattR actually understand for the first time how a screwdriver works. clap.gif

Saw a man named BJ fabricate and weld his ass off... Amazing tenacity. pray.gif

Actually saw Albert say something nice to MattR... (accident... I'm sure) rolleyes.gif

And there were many more people that showed up huge and participated in this wonderful ritual of helping another 914 owner out.

Bottom Line... 914 club members in this neck of the woods are some of the best people on earth.

What a gift......
