Why not repairable?

Posted by: spiritedTreiber Oct 4 2005, 02:19 AM

It is punched in REAL bad and it warped the targa bar. I wouldnt trust the long either around hard corners or if I ever autocrossed. The pics dont look as bad as the it really does. The rear pass. corner of the roof sits noticably lower now, and not because of the flat tire.

Sorry about your wreck, but it's great that you had no injury in a t-bone...

Look in Excellence Magazine. They post the Porsche Used car pricing at the current market rates. Some say they are too high... if that's true.. it's good for you when you go to your insurance company with the claim.

Excellence features each model almost every month, running through the entire historic product line over the course of a year, then they start again with the tables updated.

Man, sorry to hear about your car. Glad that you're okay and that I got to see the car prior at the pizza dinner.....too bad.

I just got the newest Excellence last night and it has an update on 914 prices and couldn't believe it. The guys that are pulling together the prices seems to be really up on 914s and really down on 944s. They believe you should be able to buy a cream puff '89 Turbo, with less than 50K miles for $10-11K but that a '74 2.0 in average shape will bring $5.5-6.5K. Doesn't seem quite right to me but maybe you can work this to your advantage.

Posted by: jhadler Oct 4 2005, 04:44 PM

Ouch!! ohmy.gif

That sucks about the car. Great to hear you walked away from it though. Steel and plastic can be repaired and replaced easilly enough, flesh and bone aren't so simple...

As for the vultures? Well, we all will do anything we can to help a fellow 914'er out. But when the announcement of "total" goes into the air, it's like chum in the water...

It comes down to preserving the breed I guess.. wink.gif

#2, I feel for you. Dang man, hearing about this - and seeing the photos - really hurts. That was a real clean car. That really sucks. Hang in there... Hopefully their insurance will pony up what it takes to get another car you'll be happy with.

Guess you won't be needing those bumpers any more... ... ... crap, don't even feel like posting the smiley now.

Sean,

Very glad you are O.K.

Very sorry about your teener. It was a very sweet ride.

It was great meeting you down on Alki last month.

If my teener got hit like that, there would be bits shattered fiberglass for hundreds of feet.

Good luck.

Bummer dude.

A good source of pricing information for our cars is:

http://www.collectorcarmarket.com/

Just follow the links to enter the year and model. For example a 75 2.0L is at

http://www.collectorcarmarket.com/menus/ccmprcs/75po9120.htm

Don't accept what the insurance company says. I know of someone locally who totalled her 914 a little over a year ago and the insurance company tried to claim a very low price. The body shop became her advocate and they eventually agreed her 914 - in extremely good condition - was worth about $11K.

I would, but she has a Dino wheel. I have the engine lid script though!

I got the newest edition of Excellence tonight, so hopefully the claim adjuster will look at that and take it into consideration.

Posted by: reverie Oct 5 2005, 12:29 AM

Jim, maybe you could send a PM to "Rick918S"?.. the Alien guy. smile.gif

I don't know much about dealing with claims adjusters. I know what I paid for my 914 (bill of sale), and I know the value stated on the WA Registration form (quite a bit higher), and I know the range of Blue/Gold-book values, and all of these values differ quite a bit. The Excellence magazine idea sounds very promising.

Good luck, and hang in there! cool.gif

Jim

I'm sorry to see about your car. The times I saw it, I thought it looked really nice and i know you put some effort into it. I'm sure glad you are OK. I hope the guy who hit you is OK too, but feeling bad.

Be prepared when you deal with insurance adjusters. Know what you want and have references to back it up. That excellence article is a good place to start. Anything on paper will help but, heresay like the guys on the board said "It's worth $____" won't help. Your age will work against you.

When I was 25 I got a new 74 Super Beetle. I had it 6 weeks and a guy ran a stop sign and wasted the left front including the strut. I was in dental school and didn't have much extra time. It ended up in the body shop and after 2 weeks I called to see what the hang up was. The shop owner said he could release it cause it needed a front end alignment and wasn't safe and the ASSHOLE adjuster wouldn't OK it. So I called the guy and he said the car was fine. They paid to replace the strut but wouldn't pay to align it. Neither guy would budge so I called the insurance commissioner. They straightened it out.

Even if he seems like a nice guy, the adjuster will not be on your side.

Ive got an adjuster coming to look today. Got my rental car as well. It is an '05 Grand Am. Nice car too. Power everything and it has a 3.4L V6. Later tonight Im goin to look at a silver '73 that has a 1.8L FI transplant. Sounds like a nice car. I will keep you all posted.

Just went to look at a '73 with a 1.8L in it last night. REALLY clean car. Better condition than mine was. It is silver and has Rivi's on it. 70K on the motor and 118K on the car. Hell hole has some rust though, but the suspension looks good as do the longs. As it sits, the guy wants $3600, but for $4000 he will put in a new clutch. Owner works at a Porsche/VW shop in Seattle and is second owner. Worked on the car prior to buying it. CLEAN interior and it seems like the shift is as clean as the car. He put the D-jet FI on the motor, so I would probably rip it off and install my perfect L-jet. Battery tray is gone, but the orig. mount location is still good. Battery is in the trunk, which has no rust. Car has less rust than mine, and it is a WA car. All locks work GREAT, doors close perfect, windows dont squeal, top seals are great, no cracks in dash, etc.. Opinions?????

Posted by: messix Oct 6 2005, 05:28 PM

pull the trigger, snag it b4 its gone.

Posted by: messix Oct 6 2005, 05:31 PM

do the clutch your self. $400.00 is alot of $ for a day under the teener and a few parts.

Posted by: rhodyguy Oct 6 2005, 06:18 PM

clutch, pp, tob, pilot bearing, felt washer, fw bolts, 5 hole washer, clutch pivot piece, turn flywheel, source fw if that one is bad, shipping...you'll be rolling up nearly 4 bills. they guy's not going to cut a fat hog on labor. make sure those items are included jim. reciepts.

Posted by: spiritedTreiber Oct 6 2005, 06:39 PM

Oh I will be checkin for receipts for that stuff. He will also be sourcing the engine compartment seal(s). He is holdin the car for me until I have more info from the insurance company. The fuchin adjuster wouldnt even begin to look at the value that Excellence has. Wouldnt even take the copy that I made for him! I figure I am gonna get low-balled hardcore. But if I have to, I will fight tooth and nail with these guys to get my cars value. I may need some "on-line for sale ads" from about the same kind of condition cars guys. cool.gif

Posted by: porsha916 Oct 6 2005, 07:31 PM

That's to bad about your teener, glad you are ok biggrin.gif , good luck with your replacement search!

Posted by: reverie Oct 6 2005, 07:47 PM

If the adjuster is rejecting the values in Excellence,
what is the source he is using for your 914's value?

huh.gif

Posted by: spiritedTreiber Oct 6 2005, 07:54 PM

The guy said that they have thier own source for values. No specifics. By the way, thank you all for your support and help. It is MUCH appreciated.

Posted by: reverie Oct 6 2005, 08:05 PM

The adjuster will eventually be under pressure to close this claim, and he's hoping you take the quick money. He's trying to wait you out. Don't settle, keep coming at him with consistent values, be cool.

Posted by: db9146 Oct 6 2005, 09:35 PM

If you're a member of PCA, you can call or email the home office in VA and see if they have some data they can send you on 914 values.

About ten years ago, I had my 944S totalled by a 16 year old. His dad convenced the adjuster it was my fault before I could get to him. However, after seeing the police report which included eye witness statements, the adjuster then got really nice. He had tried to low-ball me at first but after I got a copy of the police report, photos of the accident scene, and some documentation from PCA, I got more than I had paid for the car about 12 mos. before.

Good luck!

Posted by: spiritedTreiber Oct 7 2005, 12:28 AM

I will definetly have to hit up PCA regardless. Never thought of that. Luckily the other driver admitted fault from the get go, so there is no dispute there. I dont even think the adjuster will try to put any of the blame on me.

Any one have any good links to cars for sale online that I might have missed? I dont really know all the good sources that are out there. I know that Craig over at the camp might have some insight there, but that is all I really have to go on for a good source.

Holy crap! That is WAY to old to be on the road. I am so fed up with drivers around here that I am about to polish up on my german skills and move to europe.

Posted by: spiritedTreiber Oct 7 2005, 11:15 PM

Talked with the ajduster again today. They want to give me $4600 INCLUDING tax and what not for a same condition teener! That is lower than a POOR CONDITION PRICE according to Excellence! I did all I could to keep from laughing at the guy, but I figure they are just feeling me out to see just how much I know about the value of these cars. He is gonna do more research and call me back about tuesday. He wont even consider any cars that I find for sale. Says that the reason that my car isnt worth that much is because the PO had JUST the exterior painted, not the whole car. So as far as he is concerned, I have a horrible paint job, which would bring down the value a lot.

Posted by: rick 918-S Oct 7 2005, 11:51 PM

Did he agree to send his resource info to you? If he's not going to consider your resource info you at least need the opportunity to verify his sources are accurate and comparable.

Posted by: spiritedTreiber Oct 8 2005, 03:19 AM

Ill ask him on Monday. Until then I will hunt for cars.

Posted by: Michael J Oct 8 2005, 09:43 AM

Jim,
I groaned all the way through this thread. I have come so close to the same on I-5 that it gives me goose bumps to think about it.

One source of value that the insurance co can not argue with is what ever source the Dept of Lic uses to charge excise tax when you buy a car. (remember that the Ins dude should be paying that) I was shocked when I bought my '72. An average condition car was $6500. only paid $2500 and it took 3 weeks to convince the state that I shouldn't pay tax on their book value.

Good Luck and just keep telling the adjuster "no" until your satisfied. You might ask your insurance co to help negotiate the deal. They should be happy to do it.

Posted by: GWN7 Oct 8 2005, 01:20 PM

Copy the Excelence values for him and copy the Hemmings Motor ads like this one:

( $19,500 1976 Porsche 914-4 Mequon, WI
Vehicles: PORSCHE: 1976 914-4 Malega Red/Blk.2.0L All original (including paint) rust free; 36k miles; finest original anywhere;needs nothing; go to www.memory-motors.com for more info. $19,500 Contact: -8622, WI)

Put together a list of the cars and where you saw the ad.

Give him a copy of the ads and tell him to get real with his offer........

When their bill for the rental car starts to mount up they will want to cut a cheque. wink.gif

Posted by: spiritedTreiber Oct 14 2005, 10:50 AM

UPDATE!

The adjuster tried to look up vehicles for sale using his company's auto sourcing program. It is supposed to find cars in MY area. The ONLY car it found was over in Virginia going for $3800, and was in worse condition than my car BY HIS WORDS. So then he tells me to "go ahead and fax me that source that you have for values." So I fax him the whole article on 914's from Excellence. biggrin.gif He says that there is a problem with the rental company, but I think his company is pissed that they have to pay extra for me being under 21. Should have some more interesting news later today.....back to the rental car until then! burnout.gif Too bad I didnt get that extra coverage happy11.gif

Posted by: horizontally-opposed Oct 14 2005, 11:13 AM

FWIW, hit him with some of the parts prices on a teener. I know that probably shouldn't work, but it seemed to when State Farm (other driver's insurance) tried to total my car and cut me a $3000 check back when I got rear-ended in 1995. I think my angle was to show that nice 914s were worth more than that in parts alone.

"Oh, don't worry...we'll just total your car for you and get you a check today!" smiled the red-bee-hived State Farm lady behind the counter. ar15.gif ar15.gif

That's when I went NUTS and pulled out an Automotion catalog with parts prices for the rear bumper, a taillight, and other bits...then gave him the number for EASY and Partsheaven. Had to fight them for a while, but got a check for $3500 to effect the repairs eventually.
