914World.com _ 914World Garage _ How much would you pay...

Posted by: Carlitos Way Oct 13 2005, 04:13 PM

Not all information available and definitely no pictures.

Body = very clean, guards red. no apparent rust. with rear duck tail spoiler
Original(?) AC
1.8 LJet (not running)
Fuel pump not working (apparently)
Sunroof (I'm not kidding) customized on the top
faded paint, chipping near the duck tail
straight body
Trunk torsion bars still work.
Car has been sitting for about 2 years
title seems OK, but not registered to pink slip holder
Manufactured 1/75

So... how much would you pay? Oh, and before you ask... No pictures.

about $1000 to $1500.....

Posted by: porschecb Oct 13 2005, 04:23 PM

I paid $2,100.00 for my 75 1.8 3 years ago in about the same condition as this one. Int. was pretty rough but it ran and I drove it from SF to SAC. (sunroof in top? not good!)

Does it have the early bumper mod? If I had a 75 that would be high on the to do list, I'd think it would increase value.

I'm not sure...

The car is definitely NOT RUNNING. I like the car... and would like to make an offer... but quite honestly... a car that is not running is a big concern. I thought it would be "looked down" for having the AC... but I must admit I like the way the lowered knee pad looks with the AC integrated.

So.. going back to the engine... still worth about $1k even if it's not running?

If the body was nice and straight, the paint was decent, and the interior wasn't trashed then yes, IMO, the car would be worth $1K or more.

Now a seller with a non-running car is usually someone who has given up on a car so start low, like $500, especially since you haven't seen the car in person or in pics.

pull on the crank pulley, make sure it turns freeley and the motor is not siezed...if it turns, it will run.

500 bucks is the most I would pay without hearing the motor...

Well, so far the range is from $500 to $1500. I'm not really asking for true market value... but rather what YOU would pay. Any other thoughts?

We are talking what we would pay unsure.gif

I think ANY 75 914 is worth TOP dollar. I might be biased huh.gif And regardless of what Trojanman says, swap those bumpers! hide.gif

for a car that doesn't run... no more than $1k maybe. it could be a lot of $$ to get it running, you just don't know. i got lucky, paid $400 for my '75 that had been sitting for 20 years (see signature), and had it running in a couple months.

i payed $700 for a '74 that looks pretty good besides the rust bubling on the left fron quarter, has ducktail, a non-running 1.8 (which ran when i ungrounded the alarm system) and a MINT interior and those weird Western wheels. I know I got a good deal though.

I would say 8-1200 cool.gif

I paid 1800 for my 75 1.8 that wasnt running and it only took me a couple weeks of wiring clean up to get it going. The hardest part of getting it going was getting keys made without the lock number. Other than the sunroof and ac thats about the same shape mine was in. I felt i got a good deal out of it.

From what I've done... the car will crank... we tried to charge the battery and crank it a little without the coil to get some oil flowing... then we checked... no fuel is coming in, so I'm suspecting the fuel pump is shot. Maybe something as simple as a fuse... maybe the whole pump replacement. Either way, the car is not running. And I don't want to put too much time/effort/cost into getting the car diagnosed if it doesn't belong to me. I know the car will definitely need to be resprayed, brakes need to be checked and all... Last time I had to do that it turned out to be a "simple" $1200 brake job by the time I replaced the calipers, rotors and lines.

Did you make an offer?

If it ain't worth it to ya...walk away and keep the one you've got. It's just an engine repair.

I do want to fix my car first. But I must be crazy. I was thinking about "adding to the herd." But I didn't want to buy more than what would be "feasible" or reasonable. I think he's got unrealistic expectations, because he took the car in another business deal as a $2800 credit. My guess is, to get it running it will take about $4-500. Then, to get it running RIGHT, it will take another $300. Add a couple of tires, going through the brakes and to make it safe, another $500. So I'm thinking about somewhere between $500 and $700 might be a reasonable price. Hopefully he'll go along.
