914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Removing a complete rear control arm

Posted by: Gint Oct 14 2005, 05:26 PM

I know I can get it off, done it way to many times. But why oh why is it such a bitch to get these damn things off? Does anyone have a really, really, really clean way to get them off easily? I have a nice complete used rear arm with drive shaft and everything ready for a swap.

Oh, and, do any of my local gang have a cv joint gasket handy? It's the one thing out of all the crap I forgot to order that I absolutely must have to get the car back on the road this weekend.

I just removed mine last Friday.

I undid the hex bolts and banged the CV's with a rubber mallot.

Just popped off eventually.

None of mine have ever come off that easily. And this one is just ass stubborn. It's like they're glued to the gasket adn the gasket to the flanges. mad.gif

Tap a flat blade screwdriver into the mating flange....the gasket will give way and you can pry a little bit. Rotate shaft 180 and do it again. Make sure you use a Craftsman screwdriver so when you break it you can get a replacement............ biggrin.gif

off? small impact wrench, sharp chisel to separate the CV.
this will eventually wear out the triple-square bit (so get good ones and replace them as required) and of course destroy the gasket. but you'll get 'em off quick & easy.

*on* is hard.
and watch for the gasket to compress after about a week requiring *another* round of re-torquing...

Mike,

I *might* have a gasket. I have a bag full of new paper gaskets that I think are for CVs because of their size. I can check tomorrow morning when I am home. If I end up finding some I can bring them by when I get the charcoal canister. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gint Oct 14 2005, 06:58 PM

It's off. Once I got all of the control arm mounting bolts off and everything removed, it only took a quick sharp pull of the entire assembly (like a slide hammer) and it popped right off.

Ben! I may need that gasket. Probably tomorrow. I guess I better dig that canister out of the shed in the morning eh? Call me after 8:00. I do need to call around for some other odds and ends anyway, so maybe I'll get lucky.

Pics later. Gotta chow now. chowtime.gif

Mmmm... Love sushi. And sake.

Anywho... Inside right rear control arm. Notice the *bushing*, or lack thereof. No wonder the damn thing had a "loose" condition. No bushing will do that.

At least the hole isn't ovaled. Note the crunchy ear though. It'll have to do for 2-3 months until I can get it replaced.

The new. The rotor, caliper, and cheasy studs will come off and be replaced with the excellent condtion original components tomorrow. Hopefully I'll come up with a cv gasket so I can enjoy this killer weather this weekend.

Canister (nice late unit) is in my trunk. I'm off to the gun show. Call my cell (above). I can swing into Arvada if need be; no problem.

Weld it.....the weld is stronger than the original metal........................

Wow, I've never seen a control arm bushing look like that. I'm trying to rack my brain as to how that could have happened. Especially with the hole in the ear not ovaled. It does look a little more rusted than usual though.

had a couple....rubber gets old, turns brittle and under stress cracks, starts to fall apart. If your car is on a rack and you sideload the wheel, you can see it move.

Where's the panic? As I said recently (you should able to find it in the archives with a little research), this is the ONE place on the car where a judicious little bead of RTV will work nicely. And, BTW, the paper gasket fits in a depression, so it shouldn't be a cause for needing to retorque the bolts later on. The Cap'n

You haven't seen the other side of the ear. This thing is toast and needs to be replaced.

I can stop screwin around with 914's now I've seen it all! I won't do it. I'll wait until I get a gasket.

Me too. In fact I've got some in the cabiet. Not quite as think though. I'm just gonna wait. I've got plenty of other crap to do around here anyway. I can order the gaskets and everything else I need from the local import FLAPS and pick it all up at lunchtime Tuesday anyway.

I made one from a piece of thick exhaust gasket material from my FLAPS. To make sure the thing was circular, I used Word on the PC to draw 2 circles, one inside the other, printed it and used it for a stencil to cut the gasket.

Left side of my current car is that way now, -poonk- when backing up, with the wheels turned, then, -poonk- when I go forward.

and much like having no sway bars... besides the fact that I drag the inside of that tire..

The question is, when I get "Eric Arms" should I go for the bronze ones?

unsure.gif essspensive...

Yeah, Mike, cmonn. My PO (no, not my parole officer...) realized you don't need no stinkin' gaskets. And those little lock washers are for lily-livered sissies. And you *can* get away with using a Torx screwdriver, for a while....
