I know I can get it off, done it way to many times. But why oh why is it such a bitch to get these damn things off? Does anyone have a really, really, really clean way to get them off easily? I have a nice complete used rear arm with drive shaft and everything ready for a swap.
Oh, and, do any of my local gang have a cv joint gasket handy? It's the one thing out of all the crap I forgot to order that I absolutely must have to get the car back on the road this weekend.
I just removed mine last Friday.
I undid the hex bolts and banged the CV's with a rubber mallot.
Just popped off eventually.

Tap a flat blade screwdriver into the mating flange....the gasket will give way and you can pry a little bit. Rotate shaft 180 and do it again. Make sure you use a Craftsman screwdriver so when you break it you can get a replacement............
off? small impact wrench, sharp chisel to separate the CV.
this will eventually wear out the triple-square bit (so get good ones and replace them as required) and of course destroy the gasket. but you'll get 'em off quick & easy.
*on* is hard.
and watch for the gasket to compress after about a week requiring *another* round of re-torquing...
Mike,
I *might* have a gasket. I have a bag full of new paper gaskets that I think are for CVs because of their size. I can check tomorrow morning when I am home. If I end up finding some I can bring them by when I get the charcoal canister.
It's off. Once I got all of the control arm mounting bolts off and everything removed, it only took a quick sharp pull of the entire assembly (like a slide hammer) and it popped right off.
Ben! I may need that gasket. Probably tomorrow. I guess I better dig that canister out of the shed in the morning eh? Call me after 8:00. I do need to call around for some other odds and ends anyway, so maybe I'll get lucky.
Pics later. Gotta chow now.
Mmmm... Love sushi. And sake.
Anywho... Inside right rear control arm. Notice the *bushing*, or lack thereof. No wonder the damn thing had a "loose" condition. No bushing will do that.

At least the hole isn't ovaled. Note the crunchy ear though. It'll have to do for 2-3 months until I can get it replaced.

The new. The rotor, caliper, and cheasy studs will come off and be replaced with the excellent condtion original components tomorrow. Hopefully I'll come up with a cv gasket so I can enjoy this killer weather this weekend.

Wow, I've never seen a control arm bushing look like that. I'm trying to rack my brain as to how that could have happened. Especially with the hole in the ear not ovaled. It does look a little more rusted than usual though.

Where's the panic? As I said recently (you should able to find it in the archives with a little research), this is the ONE place on the car where a judicious little bead of RTV will work nicely. And, BTW, the paper gasket fits in a depression, so it shouldn't be a cause for needing to retorque the bolts later on. The Cap'n |
get some gasket paper at FLAPS and make one if you're really stuck...btdt, fussy but it works

had a couple....rubber gets old, turns brittle and under stress cracks, starts to fall apart. If your car is on a rack and you sideload the wheel, you can see it move. |
