914World.com _ 914World Garage _ testing heater blower

Posted by: qa1142 Oct 16 2005, 10:38 AM

Ok
I get great heat when driving. But I dont think the blower is running at all.

If I start the car and pull the heat lever should it run? or only at speed? I think the j tubes and main engine cooling fan is the only one pushing air.

Thanks
W

It should run if you pull the lever up.

You are getting heat because this fan just assists the engine fan - so it really only helps things move faster than they would otherwise. You are going to get more heat when you get the fan working right.

There is a switch under the lever, the switch is only on when the lever is fully up. i recall this switch make ground to the heater blower relay (on the relay plate in engine bay behind driver seat) When the relay is energized, the fan should turn on.

Check the fan first, by using a jumper wire to connect your battery directly to the fan (positive and ground) If fan works, then move ontot eh relay, make sure it is working (try swapping with your fuel pump relay, it works cuase your car runs)

Failing that, make sure the lever switch is making good contact. If all that checks out ok, then there could be a defect in the wiring or the relay plate.

good luck, the heater blower is great to have.

The most common failure seems to be the switch or the wire to the switch. To get at it, you'll have to remove the heater lever from the center tunnel.

You should hear the heater motor run with the red lever up and the ignition key turned on. The the heater motor will run before the engine starts. Eddy

agree.gif with troubleshoopting steps above. There is one exception.

Actually, the heater fan is only really helpful when the car is idling.
This bit of wisdom was passed down to me many years ago. It is apprently only intended to assist in air movement through the heating system when the engine fan is turning slowly. When the motor is turning at greater than 2k rpm (especially at 3k+ when running down the highway), your blowing air is primarily from the engine fan. It will blow far more air (and therefore overcomes the air blown by the fan motor) than the heater blower fan will.
