We have ignition and are near lift off. Rain or shine das Boot will autocross Sunday.
Many thanks to Club member Jeff Hines (sixnotfour) who built a 2.7 engine to replace the Motormeister grenade. The cost of the fresh engine was extremely reasonable. Jeff also supplied some Webers and a flywheel/clutch. He modified the cooler and made a custom metal line to the tank. When I was having trouble tuning it he made a special trip to Portland from north of Seattle and re-jetted the carbs, then went home and mailed me some larger venturis. I can't thank him enough.
I also need to thank JP Stein who loaned me his engine jack, built my shift rod, helped light the fire last month and otherwise held my hand.
Now to the cosmetics:
Here is the way she looked on arrival.

Three Club members (Craig Laughlin, Gary Chapman and Jeff Hines)
all said "get rid of the negative stripes". So I did.

Then I put on her "dancing shoes" (V Racers). Only did one side until I decide if it is going to rain on Sunday.
Frankly, I like the yellow Revolutions better. Does that mean I have a regressive "ricer" gene somewhere in the profile?
Now to the garage to change the venturis.
Forgot the pic

stripes and yellow wheels looked better!
Way to go. Looking good!
And to the club members that helped, JP Stein and Jeff Hines, you guys rock!!
looks awesome!!!
i personally liked the stripes...but its great nonetheless!
NICE.
very very nice.
cool.
I'm excited.
hey quite saying nice things about JP. your going to undermine all of the propaganda I've been planting!
good job!

Hmm... I like the look of the before better. But congrats on the progress. Really cool to hear about club members pitching in!
nice mudflaps!
Lesson learned: Don't declare victory until the battle is over. May not be dancing Sunday afterall. Over torqued set screw holding venturi. Gotta big hole. I really didn't feel like it was even snug before it broke. Screws had been locktited in instead of wired. I think the locktite residue may have altered the feel as I tightened. Anyway, now I gotta problem. Superglue, JB weld, new carb!!!
One piece:
Attached image(s)
And the other............shit!
Attached image(s)
Ouch!! Sorry, Jim--no good data on what you "should do". JB weld might hold it; not really sure.
I'd suggest taking a rattlecan to the second set of wheels, though. See if you can match the rest of the yellow close-enough.
I'll echo Miles' sentiment about the nose, too.
--DD
AUUGGGH........
For one event, Epoxy....the long cure stuff. I've never usd JB weld so I dunno about that.
I'd try globing some on....and on the venturi, pull the bolt first, what ever glue, duct tape to hold till setup, cut a hole in the tape to reinstall the bolt (& safety wire). I hab no idea if this will work
The tape should hold it in there if the glue cracks. If it totaly falls out, it could get ugly. Bring extra tape.
JB weld should work gud....I have had to do BDAR (battlefield damage assessment and repair)....Repaired two holes the size of a dime on an oil pan of an 1114 Humvee.. (6.5 liter single turbo uparmored humvee).....Truck has been rolling good for the past several months no leaks....JB weld can work wonders...so long as you keep everything clean....
JB Weld
Jim I have a set of Webers sitting at CAMP. Your welcome to see if they will work.
CCLINCARBSRUS
Thanks Craig. I'm going to give JB Weld a chance. If it doesn't work I'll take you up on the offer.
JBWeld and stick the stripes back on!
ditch the nose and install a proper FG front bumper and LE spoiler......
I think I agree with Geoff. Where do I get stripes? Jeff Bowlsby? it was a bitch to get those things off!!
Jim...the JB weld will work...get the mating surfaces real clean with acetone first....make big fillets, don't worry about looks.......don't glue in the venturi. I like the yellow wheels better too .....the car looks beautiful!
Well, JB Weld it is. Patched it together tonight. Sleeping with my fingers AND legs crosssed.
I'm being punished by Ferdinand's ghost for posting pictures and inviting you guys to take shots. My first mistake was asking my buddies about the side stripes. My wife told me to leave them on. Maybe I'm being punished for not listening to her (as usual).
Do petrol and JB work okay together. Leave the stripes off. The car looks great as is.
CCLINCARBSRUS
Crap...I dont' believe it!
Let me know if I can help.
I'm off on Friday, at your service.
Missed you at the Cart track tonight. Had a great time with Craig, Ken, and few other of Craig's friends. What a blast! We got run a total of 50 minutes in three sessions. 9hp, felt pretty fast. Good driving lesson. I'm feeling racey for this weekend!
Oh yeah, will JB weld hold gas? It's a pretty good solvent, especially with ultrasonic vibration. Does an engine produce ultrasonic vibration?
JB Weld should work fine once cured. You can get the stripes from Jeff.
Listen to your innerself: its your car, do any and everything you want to it. Mostly, have fun with it.
Oh yes, always listen to your wife......well maybe not always, mine thinks Miatas are cuter than 914s, and don't I want one of them?
How do you politely say: HELL NO!

has anyone tried http://www.alumaloy.net/
You guys went karting and didn't invite me...man, I need to get on the Portland cool guy list.
I finally got my lug bolts from Bill so I can mount my AX tires, however I snapped the roll pin in my pedal cluster so I got to drive home from work to other day without a clutch. I picked up a new roll pin today and will install it tomorrow along with the heater. Who knows, maybe I will make it out to play this weekend.

I saw that car on copart.com way back when. It was a victim of the Pittsburgh flood.
Good job bringing it back to life!
BTW I will put my vote in for the neg stripe too.

Gary, sorry to have to inform you that you are "uninvited " to kart racin g with us anymore. Thats what happens when you go to fast.
Way to showem. Lets go again.
CCLINAPEXWHATAPEX
Well, here's the patch......surgical it ain't. Solid enough that it accepted the set screw, snugged tight by hand. Don't laugh at the "daisy chain" wiring job. The screw is wired to the broken piece. If the piece comes out I want to be able to find it hanging there. Haven't done a road test yet. Tomorrow is supposed to be dry so I can get it good and warm before re-tuning the carbs. If I get to that point I should be good to go. Suspect I won't have any trouble knowing if it falls out!
Attached image(s)
Looks like I'm good to play golf tomorrow?
Geeez, hope that works.
Can it be welded (real welding) after that JB is done?
Don't think you can weld pot metal. I am optimistic. The stuff is very hard. They claim it can be drilled.

That'll hold.
I sure hope your inner self tells you to take that snowplow off the front.
It does. Going to find a painted steel or fiberglass bumper and paint it yellow. Get an LE air dam. The snow plow does have functional brake cooling ducts. Maybe I can vent through the horn grills.
Going back the the stripes too. Jeff Bowlsby is helping me out there. The car was born an LE and even though heavily modified I want it to be a "Bumble Bee".
Gary I admit that the bumping was getting a little out of hand. I think someone was trying to make the passes and not do it cleanly. Does his name begin with Ken?? He kept insisting that "I didn't hit you".
I am thinking about going over tonight to race, want to go?
CCLINKARTME
Well the Bumble Bee Racer is back on the road. The carb patch seems to be holding. 70 degrees and sunny in Portland today so she may go to the dance on Sunday in these shoes.........
Attached image(s)
Then again, the weather forcast for Sunday is 40% chance of rain, so we may wear these slippers.........

Go get em Jim,
Taking the neg stripe was your only option /free, The center stripe is painted.
personnaly I would remove that stripe , put neg stipe back on ,change front bumper/ spoiler.
its easy to say it, its your money I am thinking of spending
Or leave as is with yellow wheels.
Glad the epoxy is working, Drive that thing, 200miles in 3months is not enough, with the great weather youve had.
Decisions, decisions.........put the numbers on sail panel when side stripe was in place. Looked good there. Now I think they would be better down low behind the door. Guess I have all winter to figure it all out.
looks great jim! I don't know about the strips, it sure does look sexy right now in that portland sun.
Eric
Jim, If you like I can Photoshop some alternative schemes for you. I'd need some good, straight-on side shots in hi-resolutions.
Thanks Randy, but my camera is far from high resolution, cheap 1.3 megapixel Olympus.
I really like the look of the car Jim. You have obviously done the "Chambers Treatment" on the paint....it looks liquid...and superb.
I share your idea that because its an LE it should look like an LE, but because it wants to be a race car, it should look like a race car.
I love the center stripe and the Rev wheels, they look well done and adds an exciting racey look to the car while nodding to the LE heritage.
I would add the neg side stripe back on, to match the same yellow you have, and maybe make one other change. The tops of the bumpers...they are so Yellow...Maybe thats ok becasue it should be LOUD....but maybe paint them black to tone down the scheme a little?
Decisions decisions....
Jeff, I like your suggestions. Now that I have it running I can spend the winter focusing on the appearance. Fun.......
From one LE Bee owner to another. Hi Jim, I am Nick Moskatow I put a few ideas together for you on decal packages, depending on how much of a track car look you want. This first image could be the all out track package.
1. 911 Fuch wheels, yellow painted centers.
2. Jeff Bowlsby's porsche stripe decal.
3. Driver's name decal.
4. USA flag decal.
5. Transparent moving German flag,with number 10.
6. Owners web name Porsche Rescue decal.
7. Sean Lee's 914 Club.com decal.
8. 914 Club Racing decal.
Attached thumbnail(s)
1. Removed large moving flag for a small German flag on side.
2. Carry-over wheels with yellow painted centers.
3. All same decals on rocker panel as first image.
Attached thumbnail(s)
This image shows that the silver wheel could work on a LE Bee with graphics that relate to silver.
1. Carry-over silver wheels.
2. Web name becomes more important in silver, and yellow (Porsche Rescue) graphics, and silver stripes top,and bottom to relate to the wheels.
3. Solid yellow number 10.
4. Yellow 914 club.com decal on door.
Attached thumbnail(s)
This image moves to the yellow side.
1. New number 10 in yellow with red edge.
2. Web name done in yellow.
3. Wheels with yellow centers.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Minimal decal package for street, and track.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Porsche rescue stripe , great idea
This image is moving back into the full track graphics.
1. Solid moving German flag.
2. Silver Porsche graphics to match wheels.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Well Jim, the ideas are endless. I hope the images show the possibilities, and how to even personalize your car by using your name, and web name as a decal. Well keep up the great work on your LE Bee,and I like your garage from what I could see from the photos you posted.
This last image is another all-out track layout, but with black center wheels to give it a stealth feel.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Personally, I like the IMSA style airdam. But then, it needs side skirts for that to really fit. The airdam would look ALOT different if it was black. Wouldn't stick out nearly as much.
I'd also put the negative side stripes back on. I really liked the look of that.
All in all a VERY nice car! Enjoy!
Bee Driven,
Thank you very much. You have given me much to think about. I may need your help to figure out how to implement.
Then there is the other problem: I'm not a near good enough driver to look so good. If I do very much of that 'ol JP Stein will ride me forever!
The wheels I will be using will be the yellow 5 spoke Revolutions and a silver set for street tires. Selling the six spokes.

Good call on the wheels jim. Those 5 spokes are beauties. What a cool car I have to say, I would love to get a chance to see it some day.
Eric
JB Weld update please...
Holy cow James! That is a very stunning car
I'm envious... really man, I'm envious. Good job I wanna see it up close.
Wanna trade for my 30K M edition Miata?
......b
JB Weld is holding strong so far. Doesn't look pretty but I just don't look at it!
No trades this week Bruce, but you never know.
Nick,
Can you work your magic to turn the top of the rear bumper black (part that would be rubber if stock bumper)? I am thinking of Jeff's idea that the bumper tops might be black instead of yellow. I do plan to replace the front with a stock type fiberglass bumper when I can find one. Maybe you could also black out the top the current "snow plow" as well?

Jim,
Are you planning on selling the 6 spoke wheels? How much are you thinking? I may be interested.
And I think the car looks great as is. Understated is always the way to go, in my opinion.
Thanks Mike.
Already sold to a Club member in North Carolina. They were listed on the Club classifieds last week.

This second images shows the same paint, and striping, but with added detail of Decals. The snow-plow front does not look so bad anymore. What do you guys think?....... I will post the rear view this wednesday. Jim maybe you could take more photos of the front, and rear of your BEE outside, it would make for better photo retouchs..... Nick
Attached thumbnail(s)
Your work is fantastic. Miracle of computers! I will post some outside front rear pics today if the rain will stop long enough to take them! Thanks
Yes...very nice Nick! I'm afraid you're going to be bombarded with requests for graphics counseling now The snowplow looks almost good with your treatment, but it would be nice to see a more stock bumblebee type front too.
Nick...I am speechless...that is stunning...
Nick, here are a couple of pics taken outside. Please work your magic. I really like the front treatment you did, flowing the stripe into the bumper. I am going to try to duplicate it. If it comes out anywhere near as good looking as your work I may just forget replacing the "snow plow".
Attached image(s)
Now, what about the rear? Thinking of painting the top "rubber" area black. Other ideas?
Attached image(s)
Hi Jim, great photos of your car! This first image of the rear will match the painting, and striping on the front, but the striping will be difficult to make clean with all the little surface changes.
Attached thumbnail(s)
This image tries to create a more forgiving way of making the stripe work without bring it down into the bumper.
Attached thumbnail(s)
Nick...you have a very keen eye...a very tasteful execution. The proposed layout loses all of the incompleteness of the current paint scheme. Not completely sure of the rear scheme yet, but its getting there.
Jim...I vote to keep the 'plow front...with Nicks clever flowing stripe integration, its just radical enough to say "I am a race car" and just refined enough to nod to the cars heritage...

Wow, Nick looks great. The snow plow lives! JIm, Go with the new paint scheme on the front. I like the blended rear stripe into the bumper. Very good looking. Also the custom numbers are way better that the stickies on there now. But, will it make you faster? More yellow=More faster
Nick, Nice work. The addition of the black to top of the front air dam and to the rear bumper rubber really lightens the previous bulky appearance.
Jim, Nice car. I too like the look of the yellow Revolutions. I also like the silver street Revolutions. I have black center RFX's on my car, and I sometimes wish I had gone with the silver instead.
Nick, thank you very much. Please continue as you have time. Your suggestion to use tape to "test" the look will be put to use.
Do you have the ability to create and supply some of the graphics (numbers) you have created? Gary seems to think mine are a bit tacky (I do too after seeing yours)!
