The start of my YCTA914 project....You Cannot Turbo A 914

Here is your chance to learn from my mistakes

I plan on including as much info as I can, including drawings in PDF format and DXF files for those that can use them. Use all information at your own risk, or don't use it at all due to it being the worse design you've ever seen biggrin.gif

1st off are the flanges that'll attach the turbocharger to the collector on the European Racing header.

The turbocharger is a TD04-09B-6cm2 from a 3000GT/Stealth that ran the twin turbo V6 models (AWD I think)

More info on my turbo as well as many others can be found here:
http://www.stealth316.com/2-turboguide.htm

Currently nothing special done to the motor (stock '74 1.8)
Only mods is the header and more importantly, the aftermarket fuel injection, mine is a Link ECU

what about a twin turbo arrangement?

the TIV seems like a great motor for this, 2 small turbos, sweet.

I'm excited to watch this thread because of cool turbo stuff, but also because of Mike's fun 3D graphics. boldblue.gif

Sonunds like a cool project smilie_pokal.gif

Mike, what's your target as far as HP for this turbo conversion? I've got a small I/C (off of my Passat) if you need it.

Hi Sonu,

How is your project?

I'll be happy with about 150 or so hp.

I'm trying to do it less than $400 for the conversion, if I can keep it under that amount and I see no reason why not, it'll cost me $2.66 per horsepower.

How much for the IC? I still owe you some money for those early rear flanges......

So far:

Turbo = $250 (professionally rebuilt, new cartridge and bearings)

Collector>turbo = $35

The plumbing to the intake, and the oil lines and water lines for cooling the turbo might add up in costs so I'll have to really be careful with these items.

Keep at it mike.

I want to buy another 914 4, and turbo it. Been racking in the back of my brain for a while...

I think it would be awesome if you could market a kit... I would love to help with that.. sub 2k for a turbo kit would be cool.

Not that easy to make a good twin-turbo setup. The two left-side cylinders fire, then the two right-side ones, then the two left-side ones... So if you hook the turbos up to the cylinders on one side, you'll get exhaust flow and then nothing, then more flow and nothing. If you hook them to the front two cylinders, and the rear two, then you get a more constant flow of exhaust. But it's hard to package a front-and-rear setup like that.

Mueller, I am really looking forward to watching this project grow. After my six conversion is done sometime mid next year, I will be looking for another project. Being I already have a bunch of T4 stuff lying around, esp a nice complete 1.8 FI... Do it Mueller!! aktion035.gif

Hi guy turbo on a 914 works well if you use the turbo from a sabb .This small turbo it comes on boost quick and will hold 9lb all day the inter cooler to use is from a isusu truck or a 1.8t .we have had two 914 turbo set up's come in in the past both of them made over 150hp .this is not hard if you have the tool to make it work

Speeking of intercoolers.. Mike do you plan on using an intercooler?

Bet you can find one at pick and pull cheap....

I have one from an old volvo 765, kinda big and outdated....I'm going to look at the IC that Sonu has and see how much he wants for it.....

Still working on a few of them, not in as much of hurry for those motorcycle individual throttle bodies, but I have not forgotten about them...believe it or not, I finished one project this weekend...I installed (my 1st time doing it) 3 recessed lights and a new ceiling fan...boy, does crawling in the attic suck headbang.gif

Posted by: 914_1.8t Nov 13 2005, 10:14 PM

You can have the IC...consider it my contribution to progress, and I had forgotten about the hubs. Its small but is sufficient for upto 150-200 hp...it's used in all 150-190hp 1.8t cars and has 2" inlet/outlet.

You'll also need a BOV/BVP right before the TB...I've got one as well that will work for your hp/boost goals. You guessed it...it's off my 1.8t.

As far as my project, it starts and idles/revs fine with the new 034efi standalone. So far idle and revving it im able to get 14.5-15.5 A/F...and have a good basemap. I am planning on taking it for final tunign soon to get max hp.......but before I can do that, I still need to have those bearing put the trailing arms...can you help with that?

Awesome. smilie_pokal.gif

I also owe you for some hubs!

Let me know if I can help with the project in any way - you've saved my ass many times..

Talk to Tekkor, he seems to have a line on ductwork at reasonable prices... biggrin.gif

both turbos dump into a common airbox, and then a common TB?

that would solve that problem no?

Posted by: McMark Nov 16 2005, 11:58 PM

Aaron, I like your thinking. But it's a spooling problem. You don't spin your turbo as fast if you have distinct on/off cycles.

something like a triad exhaust,

both banks converge.... share a small length of tubing, and then diverge again....

that solves that problem smile.gif

very interested! i think this'd be a great way to blow up my 2.0 before i go to something more powerful. mueller do you have any planned amount of boost? is there any concern that the 3000gt/stealth turbo you plan on using is for a larger displacement 6cyl (i think 3000gts/stealths are 6's). do they rate turbos by CFM? once i get a valve adjustment and some motor mounts id be willing to burn some cash on assisting the r&d effort by subjecting a 2.0 to the YCTA914 treatment.

Posted by: Mr.C Nov 20 2005, 10:07 AM

The TDO4 came stock on the 2.0 automatic eclipse. It is actually smaller than the TDO5 that came on the standard models. So he should have no problem using that turbo.

Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 24 2006, 02:37 AM

How's the turbo project going?

I'm curious as to the life expectancy on the engine. I know when you go from a 944 to a 944T the pistons are forged, and the compression is lowered. Is this addressed by running lower boost levels?
