I used a Mk. III VW lock cylinder seal since I didn't have one. A darn expensive seal but it works! If you're handy with tools then get one from a junk yard car
Nicely explained!
If you'd really wanted to get technical, you could have shown how to re-key the lock while it was apart.
How about putting this in the classics?
Excellent Toby!
I forgot to include lubrication. I'll insert that. I used graphite that came in an aerosol can. Would also a very thin smear of white lithium around the lock cylinder be okay or is the graphite alone just fine?
I re-keyed my locks awhile back before I knew there was a proper way to do it (still don't know what it is). Took my ignition key and inserted it into each of the removed lock assemblies, and filed down any of the gates that happened to be protruding above the housing. Like I said, probably not the "correct" way to do it, but it worked!
He's still active. Maybe still has the content that can be reposted into a classic thread.
I just tried to look at this thread yesterday too and was taken to a banking website (I think?) Hope we can get this information back. I want to re-do my lock cylinders soon and I like to get a heads up before tackling the unknown.
Can we recover his masterpiece with the WayBack Machine? I can't get there from the network I'm on. :-(
tradisrad did a rekey on his 914, he might post the info, he is the master locksmith around these parts for 914's that is.
I did a re-key how-to that's in the Info section. Or look in my signature for the link.
Is there any way to get a new set of keys and locks? My keys are are looking more like toothpicks than keys these days.
Wonder if I can mount the ignition key in the dash, since I have to take all the parts out anyway?
PM me the info and I'll probably need you to help answer some questions I have.
Graphite is old school and very abrasive. Should not be used on lock parts.
