914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Hey, post your serial number

Posted by: URY914 Aug 17 2003, 04:34 PM

My car's serial number is

4732915715

BTW, the plate at the driver's side windshield that has the number on it, is aluminum. Won't rust- the entire car may rust away, but you'll alway know what number you had.

4 is the car, 3rd the year. i.e 473 ....73 model. next two digits, i don't know. but 29. last 5 are sequence #....00001 and up.

Mine is 4702902769. Adriatic Blue. I've got a good shot 'cause only 2768 4-cyl's and some (not sure how many) 6-cyl's out there.

Isn't there someone on this board with a really early /6 (like 0006)?

Interesting thing about my car is that in the doors, a normal 73 has the beems in the doors for side impact, heavyer doors, but mine has no beams ohmy.gif .. unlike from my other 73 (which I chopped up).

early 73? Hmm...

Yes, early '73 didn't have the side beams.

Andy,

I always thought that the '9' in both the VIN and chassis number (rear trunk and front drivers door) was the factory # code for Osnabruk...where all 914s were bornded...

Right/wrong?

Sir Andy, If I read you right, the 3rd and fourth # is the production year? That would mean my car was the 52nd year? That would make my car a 2021 model?
I found this years ago,
4=4 cylinder or type 4(can't remember)
75= year model
29= factory code
05503= yearly production number.

470 = 1970
471 = 1971
etc.

I dont know why.. i just thought it might be neat to know if your car was one of its assembly-line buddies.

...it might also be helpful to know when you see a car on e-bay that says it has a "salvaged title". ohmy.gif

I think the drawbridge jumper was a nine-86..

I have seen a posting from the guy who has 4760294072 on Rennlist. That is the newest 914 I know of.

Some newer books are rounding off the production numbers to 4100 for 76.

Does anyone know why they stopped at such a weird number (4075)?

(I do)

Geoff

Posted by: seanery Aug 19 2003, 08:17 AM

that's probably when they ran out of chasis.

Posted by: Bleyseng Aug 19 2003, 08:36 AM

Yep! They actually made a bunch of the parts in 75 before shutting down the stamping machines and re-tooling for the water cooled VW's. They put cars together until there weren't anymore useable tubs. Porsche had a ton of leftover engines so that why they build the 912E's, they had the engines and needed to "offer" a low priced Porsche.

Doesn't Brad have 9140430003?

He's not saying anything cuz he doesn't want any WD40 I'll bet.
