My car's serial number is
4732915715
BTW, the plate at the driver's side windshield that has the number on it, is aluminum. Won't rust- the entire car may rust away, but you'll alway know what number you had.
Paul
472-something... can't find the papers.. 4742915654.. I can find those..
Why did you leave that heavy assed tag on there?
M
How about a quart of Por-15

hey, this isn't fair. all the good ones where mid production. the guy that owns air cooled classics in knoxville has sisters. two consecutive 74 cars
I thought I had the secret serial number de-coder but I can't find it.
So who knows what all 'em there numbers mean?
I know the second and third from the left is the year, "73" . What about the rest?
the 2 I ruined: M4702911788 4732923382
the next: 47329199691
4742920531 and 4762903522 are mine. 4722919703 was mine, now my brothers. 4732919555 is rusting in peace out back. 4732906405, 4742908857 and 4752904098 are parted but not forgotten.
Do I win? I need the WD40 for the 911.

Redshift...what is the paint code for your car? Your VIN is in the 914 LE VIN range...
What's with all these "474" and "473" numbers?
Mine's 4702907915 - originally orange, now red.
"It's not a driver, it's a *project*."
Bowlsby,
What do the numbers mean?
Paul
4 is the car, 3rd the year. i.e 473 ....73 model. next two digits, i don't know. but 29. last 5 are sequence #....00001 and up.
stupid close guess.
Mine is 4702902769. Adriatic Blue. I've got a good shot 'cause only 2768 4-cyl's and some (not sure how many) 6-cyl's out there.
Isn't there someone on this board with a really early /6 (like 0006)?
boxsterfan
9140430242. But I know somebody on the list who usually doesn't
post who has an earlier one.

Interesting thing about my car is that in the doors, a normal 73 has the beems in the doors for side impact, heavyer doors, but mine has no beams .. unlike from my other 73 (which I chopped up).
early 73? Hmm...
Yes, early '73 didn't have the side beams.
Paul
The "29" is the number for the Karmann factory.
Earliest would be my son's 4702910911......the others are much younger
I think the guy in Novato would win with the 04 car
my car: 47 02 912181
from the "Das Grosse VW-Porsche Buch" ...
for 914/4:
(example) 47 02 912181
47 = type number = Model 914
02 = year code = 1970
9+ = # Count = 12181
for 914/6:
(example) 914 0 4 3 1234
914 = type number = Model 914
0 = year code = 1970
4 = engine code = 2L - 6 Cyl - 110 HP
3 = body type = Roadster
1234 = # Count

Andy,
I always thought that the '9' in both the VIN and chassis number (rear trunk and front drivers door) was the factory # code for Osnabruk...where all 914s were bornded...
Right/wrong?
4762904063
Geoff
Man, the WD-40 stuff is dangerous....keep it out of reach of yer kids. Might ruin yer paint job or something.
4732906003
Don't spray it on your tires, on the 911 BBS I heard it eats the rubber.
Geoff
Come on who has a newer car than me... I only know of one.....
I know 914'ers can handle a can of WD40 safely.
But the 911 boys need training.
Paul
4752905503
Sir Andy, If I read you right, the 3rd and fourth # is the production year? That would mean my car was the 52nd year? That would make my car a 2021 model?
I found this years ago,
4=4 cylinder or type 4(can't remember)
75= year model
29= factory code
05503= yearly production number.
Rusty,0001? Cool!
I thought it was type 47, then the model year.
470 = 1970
471 = 1971
etc.
Bleyseng's car is 12 units from the end of the 914 production run in 1976 (or so he told me)!
I think he wins the highest vin number award!
76, Karl
Anyone know the VIN# of the infamous florida drawbridge jumper?
I dont know why.. i just thought it might be neat to know if your car was one of its assembly-line buddies.
...it might also be helpful to know when you see a car on e-bay that says it has a "salvaged title".
I think the drawbridge jumper was a nine-86..
(for sale: 914, clean longs, sags.. $2000.00 obo... yellow cars fly farther.)
M
I have seen a posting from the guy who has 4760294072 on Rennlist. That is the newest 914 I know of.
Some newer books are rounding off the production numbers to 4100 for 76.
Does anyone know why they stopped at such a weird number (4075)?
(I do)
Geoff
that's probably when they ran out of chasis.
Yep! They actually made a bunch of the parts in 75 before shutting down the stamping machines and re-tooling for the water cooled VW's. They put cars together until there weren't anymore useable tubs. Porsche had a ton of leftover engines so that why they build the 912E's, they had the engines and needed to "offer" a low priced Porsche.

Jeff
My book shows the earliest chassis number as a
1969/1970 914/4 1.7 4702900001
I wonder where that one is!
Jeff
Oops... I meant to type in '76 regarding Bleyseng's serial number. Was tired last night.
the last digits are 0347
OOPS thats my 928.
I got to look at the teener, I am sure I am not in the running.
I'll add mine for posterity. Certainly not the youngest or oldest: 9140432238
I thought I'd read that the 0 was the year, the 43 a factory location and the last four #'s the build sequence.
Doesn't Brad have 9140430003?
He's not saying anything cuz he doesn't want any WD40 I'll bet.
Geoff
Didn't they build more than 9999 a year?
So how could the last four be the sequance?
Paul
Sorry,
I thought we were talking about -4's
Paul
now is anyone actually collecting all this info and putting it in a nice spreadsheet that we then can use to build our very own 914club registry
don't and

Hey scotty...Do you have an LE car? Your VIN is just at the edge of the known LE VINs.
Whats your color code from the door jamb plate?
Not an LE that I know of (third owner). Given the paint code L51p (Olympic Blue) I kinda doubt it... Karman chassis #1519554, if that helps.
This looks like a solid, low number so far:
