914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Adjustable rear droplinks

Posted by: Brando Nov 25 2005, 10:48 PM

It can be a pain getting ahold of rear droplinks (i'm having a pain).

Thinking about having adjustable droplinks made for less than OEM/Retail price. How many would be interested in adjustable rear droplinks with openings for stock bushing size?

Let loose the flames and support. *puts on devo RAD suit*

a question that is sure to be asked:

"Mr Brando, what good would adjustable droplinks do on a non adjustable rear bar?"

Posted by: brer Nov 25 2005, 11:21 PM

i'd take any droplinks at a reasonable cost. wacko.gif

Seems like adjustable drop links would be necessary if you are going to adjust corner wts. To spend all that time adjusting your ride height to get the corners balanced if you have to tweek the sway bar to install the drop links that would screw up the corner wts.

Tell me more, I'm listening. idea.gif

Would they be mounted to the bar in such a way to allow adjusting firm/soft?

if the price is right, I'm interested

I actually thought it was a good idea. It would give you at least some adjustment which is better than you have with a stock bar now. Plus the fact that you can get them for less. I am in for a set.

Mr A-aron Admin Budding Engineer......

No sway (anti-roll) bar is adjustable. Only the length of the arm and/or the drop links.

I can see it's back to Tricycle 101 for you.

adjustable - as in the length of the lever arn changes, by moving the drop link closer (STIFFER) or farther (softer) away from the pivot.
with an adjustable bar, you need adjustable droplinks.....

i wouldnt think you would need adjustablity with a fixed arm bar (like a stock rear bar), but someone mentioned cornerweighting...

a fixed arm bar

They *all* are. It's the drop links and there abilty to slide on the "fixed arm bar" that makes them adustable.

We had this discussion a year ago when Ira was looking for someone to test his adustable rear bar. wink.gif

A drop link with a mounting bracket that would allow you to slide the droplink on the bar would be fantastic.

eliminating the preload would be nice...ideally the with the car on a level surface it should have zero force differential between each end link, but due to tolerances and beat up chassis and parts, there is bound to have one side under stress instead of being neutral...good idea, just don't use those cheap McMaster-Carr hiem-joints.....I bougth a set of homemade front units at a swap meet and they started to wear out within a few hundred miles

but the droplink mount onthe bar is not adjustable.

we are talking ADJUSTABLE droplinks not adjustable droplink mounts....

so i said...without a "Moveable droplink attatchment point" on the bar, the only benefit of a height adjustable droplink is to eliminate preloading of the bar...

quit bitching about techincalities...

i've actually been thinking about fabricating these on my own, so i'd be in for a quality set, brando.

after corner-weighting the car, i have some serious preload on the rear bar. (also thought about just cutting and welding it to shorten one side...)

cut in the middle, get a die and cut left and right hand threads on it, and make a female threaded middle piece....

basically mod the old dogbone into an adjustable length droplink

Yes. The drop link should feel loose and be twistable by hand with the car flat on the ground.

I'll throw a wrench into all of this.. you only need to make one side adjustable. You dont need two.

Yeah but if I can sell a pair for cheaper than one OEM rear droplink why not?

Posted by: trekkor Nov 29 2005, 12:33 AM

Do you have a picture of your design?

I still want to know if they will make the rear bar adjustable?

thanks,

KT

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 29 2005, 12:35 AM

I wasnt disagreeing. I think it is a good idea.

These are Porsche Motorsport drop links for a GT3 cup car. Typically they use one solid and one adjustable on front and rear.

Trek,

from what I gather: it will not make the rear bar adjustable. He wants to produce a drop link that allows you to take any pre-load out of the rear bar.

B

Posted by: trekkor Nov 29 2005, 12:41 AM

I was hoping he was designing a drop link that would slide on the bar, too.

We should make one and call it WELTMIESTER
Oh wait.. they already have that.. biggrin.gif

beat me to it.

he is just making an adjustable length droplink...that im *guessing* utilizes stock bushings?

maybe do some heimjoint action?

Posted by: Brando Nov 29 2005, 03:00 AM

What I want is a clamp on one end that's got serrated edges so you can adjust it along the bar. My first attempt will be adjustable length droplinks, then the ones I just mentioned if they can be made inexpensively enough.

I was looking for the same thing and modified one of my stock drop links. I used M10X1.25 taps and dies and made the turnbuckle on a lathe.

I'll take a pair. I was just down there changing out control arms and I was thinking I'd love to have this.

Make some for the stock front bar as well. I have an 18mm 930 bar up there and corner weighting would be great. wink.gif

Posted by: Phoenix-MN Jul 25 2008, 07:25 PM

I guess I didn't know I was going into production on these confused24.gif If I were to do this, I would require people to send me their drop links to modify since the links are not easily sourced. I also would have to figure out what to charge idea.gif

sick design!

Buy thick-walled tube stock or round stock and bore it out.

Dug up an old thread. I guess no one ever pursued this idea?
