914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Should I get this car for parts?

I am beginning to start my 914 addiction and am currently doing my research. My goal is to get a 914 probably 2.0 that will need some restoration but drivable.

This is a message that I sent to the 914 Rennlist email group and was hoping to get some feed back from the folks over here.

I'm definately going to get a 914 in the future. The time table is unknown.
I'll probably end up with a 2.0.

You guys think I should buy this car for parts. I was looking on Pelican
Parts and AutoAtlanta for body parts and they are pricy. The front fender is
$1399.99 from Pelican Parts by itself!!!
The hood from AutoAtlanta is $680.

Is anyone interested in any of the parts?

The car is an '71 914. The lady is the second owner. There are a few things
in the car that are still good. Both doors, engine and tranny are probably
still good. Albet they will need rebuilds.

She did have a few parts for the car at her house that she never installed.
She has a new hood (metal), front bumper (metal), front spoiler (fiberglass)
Sports black mirrors, pass. light motor, pass. turn signal, Pass front
quarter panel (metal), pass side marker, GT fender flares (fiberglass).

The lady wants to sell everything all at once. She has a kid that she is
getting ready to send off to college. She was asking me for $1,500 for the
car and parts but she knew when she said it that she was not going to get
that from me.

I'll post again soon when I get the pics up.

Hi Dave!

Welcome to the BBS! I saw your post on the Rennlist this morning.

Just a quick suggestion: Get a program like T-Nailer or some other little utility that will create html pages with thumbnailed images. That will really make it easier for people to view your pictures.

NO need to get the pics up.. post them straight from the computer.

Run. Its a 1.7 car. There is really NOTHING on that car that could be sold to recover any money spent on the purchase of the car.

Save your money and (everyone say it with me... buy the best car that you can afford).

Dont end up with 3 parts cars and one good running car. Take your time and be patient.

In Ca. we are GIVEN cars better than that one.

I wouldn't go over that.

But, if you don't have a car yet, don't put the horse ahead of the buggy. (damn that's a corny-assed line)

it's the new parts that have any value. not retail though.

P.S. If you're not very familiar with 914s... find someone very knowledgeable to go with you to look at a car you intend on buying. If you don't have access to a 914 guru - get a professional PPI. It's cheap compared to the nightmares that get sold to unsuspecting buyers.

B << gave up on PPI's.. the 9146 split car I have was SENT to a well known Porsche shop and they missed it. Find local 914 GURU and buy them food/beverages.

DONT BUY THIS ONE. Dont even take it if she GIVES it to you. Why waste space/time dealing with a POS like that ?

You could always buy it and sell it to AA.

Seriously, if it was close-by to me, and I had the storage space and time to screw with it - maybe it would be worth a hundred bucks to me. Mostly for the experience of cutting it up, and seeing how some of the more complex parts of the chassis were put together.

There aren't very many good parts left on that thing, though.

Okay.. I took the time and looked at all the pictures. If you will use all those spare parts, or can sell them on evilBay...

Its not worth the time it takes to disassemble the car.

If it was the "last" 914 ever built.. maybe..

My standards have changed since my first 914 in 85.

You and I disagree, Brad.

But I own (I think) the only running 914 within 100 miles. They don't sit in junkyards around here. Sometimes I wish I had an old carcass under a tarp out back... just in case I needed the odd nut, bolt or alignment shim.

For me - that's worth it.

But there are some nice NOS parts with this package that could be sold off to finance the deal.

Hi,

The last 2 cars I bought cost $200 each. Buy a better car. No matter how many spares you get , you're asking for a headache with that one.

Be patient and find the right car. These are 30 yr old cars and they eat cash. Its worth it though!!!!
