I'm sure your all aware of the rumors. Yes I did make a 1664 mile trip to pick up a car that is equal in condition to any Minnesota rust bucket I could find right here at home.
Well, here's the story. I gave Britt such a bad time when he bought this car I felt I owed him at least a cup of coffee for being such a good sport about it.
The assignment:
I'm thinking about repairing this car. (believe it or not) It is a strange color of pink. Fushia, hot pink, something like that.
I would like everyone to search the corners of the internet, old mags, porsche ads, and whatever else you can think of. This car may have been ordered for someone's 16 year old daughter, Playboy Magazine, Mary Kay, or maybe it was just a mistake. But It would be interesting to learn about the origin of the car.
It may never be repaired, but it will be interesting to see what we can turn up on this car.
I'm going to send for the build info..... what do you call it... and where do you send your money....?
This should be interesting.
I'll post more photo's later.

Wow! where is the front end? Is there a thread with pics of the rest of the car? Oh, and good luck.

COA - cert of authenticity.... dont know where joo send the money.
doesnt look pink....
whats the color code on it?
and why cut the front off of it... there are easier ways to make it fit ona trailer
It's Kentucky Red.............front end is gone 'cause the Revenuers took it....moonshine tank was in the front for weight balance ya know........
Paint code is 98. Only denotes special order color. doesn't give a name of the color or the paint code.
The front went to a worthy cause.
Adjust your screen and look at the bulk head in front of the gas tank. It's not faded is hot pink or fushia....
I did it cuss I'm a Crazzzzy...

The PCA.org site has an address where to send your $ for the COA. I think it went up to 100 of them just for that little piece of paper.
Three cheers for custom color cars. That looks like an interesting one. Quite the project as well.

My former Employer had a 68' mustang fastback that where find was pink when we stripped it for a resto. After all the research it turned out it was a custom color for the playmate of the year! Looks like a great/fun project!

Hi Rick,
Look at that paint code on the door jam again. Could it be 98 in lieu of 78??
Paint code 98 was the special paint code for color to match. Look down the postings about (20) down and read "what color is it". It explains the special paint to match. Best to check this out before you spend $100 bucks.
Tom
Rick,
I would be happy to donate you the front half of another car...just gotta take another road trip...I could come towards you and we could meet somewhere...

Was checking and found out that Playmate of the year 73 got a pink Volvo 1800 so 72 could have gotten a 73 car but havent been able to find out what.
For those that missed the original thread, Britt posted some pics of the car and the tags and it was unofficialy agreed on, that this could, possibly, maybe has all the signs of a one time only color. I'll leave itr at that and not comment on what happend to the front clip and the V.I.N. no's on the fender well

The front clip looks very nice. I've seen it. I have the car now. Britt was generous and gave me a deal on the car. Maybe I can fix the car. (I know I can fix it) I hope to find out what dealership the car was delivered to. Maybe I'll find some old salesman that will remember a Fushia 914. That would be interesting.

Ok, So when I was a kid back around '74/'75 or so, I took a family
weekend trip with my parents from Nashville, Tn and we went up to the
"Land between the Lakes" area (Lake Barkley). For those
not aware, its an area in the western part of Ky just north of TN
and just south of Illinois.
Anyway, when we got there and parked in a wooded picnic area,
we saw a hot pink kind of fuschia 914. I remember it being so bright
it almost hurt your eyes to look at. My mother kind of made fun
of it saying all it needed was some white polka-dots.
I remember being fascinated by the color. I'd never seen a car
(any car) that color before. It was like the color of a hot lipstick.
It definitely wasn't a 75 or 76 as it didn't have the big rubber bumbers.
My dad had a 71 and it seemed to look fairly similar- but I wasn't very
familiar with the car and it was so long ago I can't remember much more. It did have the black side vinyl panels unlike my dads which
had painted sail panels.
I do remember it being the color closer to the small one of
the 944 posted by SirAndy.
Not sure if its the same car or not, but the area of the country
is similar.
Has the car lived all its life in the Kentucky area?

This is 30 year old paint, 30 years of California sunshine...not so great for your paint. It resembled pink, but not in areas where the sun didn't shine.

This is a pic of my code 98 "maybe it was pink" car. The pic is of the sail panel. I don't know if you can really see the color, but I swear it was some kind of pink. Mind you, this is not faded because it was covered by the sail panel vinyl until about a year ago. I found the same color under the carpet and on the firewall. The car was repainted some kind of metallic red. But the hidden areas are still factory color.

Ah Hah....another case of seperation at birth......................
Indeed, it is very interesting. Code 98 is a custom color, but an existing paint, so the color had to be a current paint available to VW or Porsche. A paint to match a color sample was code 99, thus a true custom color.
At the time Britt was asking, I did a search for VW and Porsche color codes that looked a match, but did not come up with anything. I wish I could get an actual chip sample of the paint to work with. Computer colors are nearly useless.
Rick, I really need the chassis #, I'll bet they are 1 number off as well. If not, there may be more.

Jason,
a couple of pointers for determining engine:
check the decal on the evap tank above the fuel tank for the tire description, SR=1.7, HR=2.0
check the engine compartment above the realy board for the engine decal, EA=1.7, GA=2.0
Typically the 2.0 came loaded in 1973 with sway bars, Fuchs alloys, fog lights, chrome bumpers, console. Loop pile carpet as well.

Porsche did a "buble gum " colored cars cars at that time they were used in some of the ads most were 911's One of my friends has on that was purple, and was repainted aburnine (sp) They could have done some 914's as part of the ad campain.

Bahia Red L30E was a standard color for 71 through 74 so it could not be that color. The code 98 means custom and extra cost. So far, see my own thread, we have 11 VIN's with code 98. That is pretty small percentage of total production. Any custom color demands special treatment IMHO. Jason, please post the chassis # to be sure I read it correctly. |
So if Santa brings you a whole bunch of little bottles of p****y pink fingernail polish, how long would it take you to paint the car?
Ken
Thanks Jason, just wanted to confirm.
In my paint chip brochure for 1973 there is an optional paint for the 911 called 'raspberry' and it looks like an excellent candidate. Not listed for 72 or 74. Can't find a code for it though.
Ah, maybe not so fast. In my paint & upholstery book it has color 024 / 4510 as rose red/fraise, however fraise translates as strawberry
http://www.paintscratch.com
choose Porsche 1973
aubergine is 025 / 4010
guards red or India red is 027 / 2510
sepia brown is 415 / 5410
these are all 1973 colors.
by 1977 there is
magenta or fucsia = 009 / H2V9 in the new code system.
however PPG says magenta was available from 73 to 77

Just did search on the Bird Board for Mkinne. His last post was 2003. I sent him an email and a PM over on the Bird. If he still has the same email address maybe he'll join us and help shed some more light on the subject.
I go away for a couple days and we seem to have a cool mystery unfolding here!
I found that Matt Kinne has an entry here, but no posts, so I emailed him also. That is the car I added in my post to the code 98 thread.
So can we agree to call it Rose Red / Raspberry?

The color is a very Hot Raspberry color on Britt's old car. I wouldn't call it pink.
We'll I guess I would call it pink, specially when I spanked a tail dragger with twice the HP! <!-- emo&:headbanger: --><!-- endemo -->

I've got a book on some of Porsche literature / sales brochure. There was German ad for a 1972 911 the car appears to be Pink / raspberry is the 914 a 72?
this is on a 911 S

same time frame as the Pink 914's

That 911 appears to be Aubergine or perhaps Lilac, I'd need to know the paint code. These colors were current in the period 1970 to 1974 and perhaps later.
When the IROC series first began they used Porsche 911's which were painted very bright colors. I can't remember, but I bet there were some pink, fuschia, or rasberry colors used.

I nominate this thead for Classic status! All the years I've owned 914's I never knew such outragous colors were available. I think the discussion is casting light a whole new direction for research. Coming from a body shop background and painting thousands of cars the same blues, burgandys and vanilla ho hum, I'm really enjoying this exchange.
I had a nice chat with Davep on the phone last light. Dave is a very interesting guy.
BTW; it sounds like someone he knows may have done a 928 conversion in a 914. I told him it's another Alien sighting until we have pictures.
Thanks Rick, it was a real pleasure talking to you. The period colors were rather funky, and many I like better than the current lot.

me like colors.
It took me forever to do the research, but I have come to the following conclusion. These cars were painted for a pair of Gastroenterologists. That had a partnership and did some medicine development on the side. It seems that the Dr. Pepto and Dr. Bismol purchased these cars as gift to one another.
So Rick you must have Pepto and Jason must have Bismol.
Congratulations, the mystery is solved.
That 911 is probably Lilac. It certainly ain't Aubergine.
I sent DuPont an email last week. I got a call from a paint tech today. He didn't have a clue about the Raspberry color. Once I gave him the link Davep listed to paintscratch.com he was able to find a code that he thinks will match.
The code is 33768 only available in Centari or their Nason acrylic enamel paint systems. I'm going to the local Dupont supplier to have a pint mixed. I want to spray out some test panels.

Here's a picture of the IROC cars including the Strawberry Pink car that was driven by David Pearson and Al Unser. This car later won the 1980 SCCA Trans AM Championship.

Aw jeebus, thought i'd escaped. Now i'm gonna get sucked back in. About the car: VIN 4732908605 (1973) Was 1.7L, pink (code 98) w/ tan interior and chrome bumpers. Now 2.0L, metallic black w/ black interior (and chrome bumpers). Has been in the family since around 1976. Second owners, I think. Some more recent pics here > http://rider914.smugmug.com/gallery/446239/1/17961366 There is still some original pink in the hard to reach places. I'll take some pics, but that'll have to wait until I get home. Am in MI now (for work) thru 12/23, then i'll probly disappear for awhile on the http://rider914.smugmug.com/photos/43404169-L.jpg before getting back to work in '06. (Three years ago, when I escaped from the 914 tinker-bug to pursue other passions, I was searching for subaru conversion info and found very little. Now it appears that every other thread is suby related. Must resist reading more...) - Matt |
Killer! Cool!
when you get to it mabey http://www.autointeriors.biz/Complete_Custom_Interiors/Pinked_Range_Rover.html is the type of interior it should get....
i'm starting to see more and more hot pink show up in my front trunk from huge crap shuffling around and chipping the top layer of paint.

Rick, I know of a couple 911s in that very color, and there was also a single 914 around the 85-6 time frame in Atlanta, I used to see it frequently in, and around the Smyrna area.
911s were both 74s I think, and Lauderdale/Miami.

Bruce was just saying that it might be the same car..
Am I right in thinking it's metalic, but not really metal flake?

it doesnt have a metallic look to it...
it honestly looks like pepto-bismol.

Just saw this post,
I used to do alot of window tint when I was in college. I tinted 2 930's that were this exact color, the color was a special order from the factory and the color dated back until 72 according to the owner, of the two 930's. He was very concerned about the condition of the paint and how the cars were handled. He had an RSR painted the same color, and it had been damaged and when repaired, it never matched.
The name of the color I think you have is Porsche "Special Red" it was never coded that I or the owner of the 930's knew of. I had seen it shot over a pearl base over silver, and it just stood out and was probably the most obnoxious color I had ever seen
I loved it. The most stunning car I ever layed my eyes on. and it looked the best when I laid some sweet tint on the windows. 5 % black out don't you know.
Look under the code "Porsche Special Red"
Erik Madsen
ummm....so did we ever figure out any real details about these two (three) cars?? I have been doing a lot of research on these cars the last couple days, and I would really like to know about these two. They had to have been ordered as a pair.... has anyone sent a letter to PCNA?? ask the factory if they have any documented info on these cars??
I've been busy with other things lately. The car rests inside my garage. The wife wants me to scrap it. I told her to mind her own business. She didn't like that too much, but I am building a car for her now so she is letting sleeping dogs lay for now. If I'm going to fix this one, I need to locate a donor close to me that is free or next to it. So any MN or WI guys that are getting rid of a donor keep this poor soul in mind.
Jason, I posted the code in this thread. If you decide to paint the car Raspberry, that would be cool! If you don't it's your car. I'm still getting some paint to shoot a test panel. I'll send you and DaveP a test panel.
Update:
I just ordered a pint from my local DuPont store, They are mixing it now. $ 26.00 a pint! Ouch!
BTW: They list it as Strawberry not Raspberry. It was noted earlier that the German translation for the color is Strawberry. We'll see....
Jason... please do. Too special of a color to paint over. Rick I hope you can save it.
hey rick, if you decide to quit on the car, I will make you an offer you cant resist. Same with you jason. I would DIE to have BOTH of these cars in my garage.
Just picked up the paint. It's a match. I'll try to shoot some test panels this weekend.
well..you got a pic of the paint??
Rick, that kid is freaky...
our plan is working...the one we discussed at the greek place. I have some testing subjects

I dont appreciate being part of a science project! Just let me have the P*ssy Pink car and everything will end happily
do I get to drive a delorean??
Rick just a werd of advise when it comes to Nason paint......RUN! That stuff isn't bad to shoot but if you have to repaiar it it is complete crap!! The paint supplier I deal with has actually stopped selling it because they had so many complaints. I shot 2 cars with it and doubt I will do a 3rd.I assume if you paid 25.00 for a pint you got the Centari anyway
Lyle has emailed me, and it was originally silver. He is on the road.
I was on a job in Tiawan back in '98 with a guy from the Los Angeles area - don't remember his name (Matt maybe) but he was a scene painter for movies etc if it jogs anybody else's memory. Anyway, we talked cars and he told me about his family's collection of 914s.
He told me he had one that had A/C and that it was originally pink from the factory. The story he was told when they got it was that it was a gift from Hugh Hefner to Barbie Benton when she became Playmate of the Year. Don't remember anymore about it than that but would guess that would help establish year.
P**** Pink for the color name may be more accurate than anybody knew.
I know of two that came from TN
and I'm still waiting for samples.
For shits n' grins.... Here are a few Raspberry 911 pics I have collected. And, one 914GT I photoshopped.
Sorry, I have been busy and when I haven't, I forgot about it. I'll put this back on the burner...
Think the car may have been an aftermarket paint job in tribute of the famous 917 pink pig? Just a thought
The mystery of the pink cars has a new clue! My friend that owns the 280SL that I'm repairing found this video link!
HOLY CRAP!

I just caught up with this thread. And I gotta say, I'm liking it. I'm stoked, cause I now have a name for that pink color, as I've always loved it. It should make it easier to build a car for the wife now, as she's a pink freak.
I get the whole color search thing, as I spent forever looking for that very light, extremely vibrant blue. It was a bitch finding that code, and now that I have a gallon of it, I'm still not sure I've got it right, I've been told it's either mexico, or rivierra blue..... so ya, I totally get the frustration, as well as the drive to get it right. Carry on!
Maybe Carl Sagan rode in it!
http://nicksagan.blogs.com/nick_sagan_online/2006/12/dad.html
For those who stumble onto this thread sometime in the future I now have Jasons Raspberry car. I still plan on repairing the car in the post. I have a Celette now which will make repairing the front clip easy. So eventually these will be twin sisters.

so whats with the other one in the photo with the new project?
