914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Noob shifter question 901 to 915

Is it possible to use a 915 shifter on a 901 transaxle?

Yes, you have to mod the guts though.

Did it years ago.... trying to remember

You do have to modify the shifter, but Porsche had a 901 style shifter in the 1972 911s with a 915 transmission, so it is definately possible. Don't know if it would be a worthwhile project though.

Well, this is sort of why I was asking... In the Mid-America catalog they list a gate shift kit for the 915. But then it also goes on to say "Upgrade your 901 gearbox to use a 915 shifter." Its item 411-098. I don't see it on the web site but its in the catalog. Nice price too!!!
I'm sure the RennShift is a great piece as I have read everyones reviews and they all have great things to say about it, but the $$$$ is the problem right now.....

Anyone seen this thing and have an opinion? For the price I might consider being a guinea pig and try it out. However if someone already has it and can give me the low down..... cool_shades.gif

Once again, its only in the catalog and not on the web site..... Surely its been around for a while....

Its no longer available, even though it was printed in the last catalog.... Mute subject now....

a 915 is -
1 3 5
2 4 R

if the 915 has a reverse lockout or a gated spring.....

flip it around 180 degress....
R 4 2
5 3 1
and guess what! your lockout is now a 901 reverse gear smile.gif

imagine that....

so... speculating here... i believe a 915 rennshift is identical (except shift rod attachment) but just the body is flipped 180 smile.gif

First, you need to obtain a late 915 shifter (911 guys are not known for giving parts away dirt cheap), and to do it right, you need to cut the 915 shift housing and reweld 180 degrees around to get the lockout in the right place (how are your aluminum welding skills?). Most people want a short shift (my data point is that I sold about 1% shifters at stock throw when I offered them that way). Then add the gate shift. You are probably beyond the price of a RennShift now, and you still have the crappy factory lateral pivot in the 915 shifter.

Save up your money and get the unit designed to solve all the problems once and correctly. I will admit I am a little biased. wink.gif

Do you have a side-shift? Forget all that above - you can't use the 915 shifter because even if you did weld together the proper linkage attachment to the shifter shaft, there is no way to access the adjustment bolt because of the size of the shifter housing.
