All I have seen was
L98C-Beige Metallic Clearcoat
L98P-Blue Metallic Clearcoat
L98A-Maya Brown Metallic Clearcoat
From what I can gather, all the 914 colors are listed under VW, not Porsche. My car is none of these, so I can't help out on the photos
Posted by: davep Dec 7 2005, 07:43 PM
What I'm looking for is the paint code 98 cars. Not L98 anything just 98 (or 99). These are the custom color codes.
Here is another possible one:
4732908605 98 Pink

Dave, can you put peoples user names next to the vin's? It would be nice to know who has the custom or special order colors at a glance.

So do I have to feel bad if I don't paint my car "rasberry"? I may regret the day I discovered my car should be ahemm.....
pink.

4732902087 is what you list as owned, and your sig says black.
If this is the car, then please provide chassis # and whatever other details you can.
I'm sure there are a few sepia brown I don't have. That is why I am trying to beat the bushes with this thread.
I always encourage everyone to send me data on the cars they own, it all helps.
Jason, call it Rose Red instead of pink. I'd be inclined to keep any custom color original, they are so rare.
Posted by: Bleyseng Dec 8 2005, 10:48 AM
I haven't even seen a pic of a pink car posted yet. It there any??? besides that track car.
A friend tells me of a eggplant color car I need to go look at for sale.

I have both cars, Dave. The Aubergine is waiting for me to get working on it. It's my big time full resto car. Here's the number plate. Looks like chassis 2249526.

I've always found it interesting that my aubergine car has a sepia brown door replacement.
Very odd.

Here is a friend of mines Auburgine car...repainted a few years back in another shade of purple. It is an original Aubergine car, however. I saw the paint code myself. I can get all the details if you would like. 5 lug conversion done at the dealership at the time of purchase she was told.

She swears thats the deal. She is supposedly the second owner. Its a loaded 74 2.0, that they tried to get a six in from the dealership, but PORSCHE would not build it. SO the order was a 2.0 four.
Here is the GT in the MYSTERY color...a very famous race car is the exact color...

Ah, the famous Lilac car, or one of them anyway.
Note that 341 is a Porsche color, also a different series than used later.
It would be 69 or 6910 in the later series.
VW # L40M

Do you realize that they used the correct paint number on the car instead of '98' to indicate a custom paint. Strange.
Any and all info on this car would be great to learn.
Posted by: North Bay 914 Dec 9 2005, 12:11 PM
This car is a real six, but was restored by PORSCHE, and the code tag was replaced when painted. The owner told me the car went down to the bare shell, then the GT kit added, which he purchased from Jurgen Barth, yes, Jurgen Barth. Complete factory 914GT kit, flares, lids, door panels...I have many more photos of it.

bondo has a 70 or 71, Aubergine. Whether it started that way or not, I have no idea. Maybe he can chime in and let us know.
The next time Laura is in Santa Maria with her car, I'll snap pics of the plate. It has been repainted in a different shade than what it started out as. It *may* have been lilac. The new color is darker.

Its there now I believe, and the color is a modern Chrysler shade I think she told me...she chased down someone in a Neon to get the paint code off it...but it 100% Aubergine, she showed me the original paint in several spots, because I had trouble believing it was that color on a later car.
Posted by: markb Dec 15 2005, 12:38 AM
Yup, started life *some* shade of purple. Check under the carpet in the rear trunk. Where I didn't paint over with POR 15, the original paint is still there.
Posted by: North Bay 914 Dec 15 2005, 12:44 AM
Are you her mechanic down there? She speaks highly of someone who works on the car down that way. She really needs to back date the exhaust on that car...it has a 75 2.0 engine in it, with the late exchangers.
Posted by: markb Dec 15 2005, 12:53 AM
Actually, it's The Cap'n (John) at West Coast Garage, but I do some of the 914 stuff, since I'm a 914 addict. We still need to sort out the alarm system on that car. It's glitchy (technical term ). The original motor from that car was running extremely rich, and John was worried it was going to destroy itself, so he put in that motor. It's *supposed* to be temporary, but I think he'll wind up getteing her hubby's /6 on the road before he does much more than maintenance on her car.
I haven't been in to the shop in over a week (the real job has me working extra graveyard shifts to cover for the slackers), so I don't know if she's down here or not. I need to catch up with her & get a broken left taillight lens to replace the good one I put on her car. I need the reverse section so I can repair a euro lens.

Heh, this thread made me go look at my paint code, L32K or Phoenix Red. But when I look behind the backpad and A-pillars, it's soooo Signal Orange. I just assumed the car was originally Signal Orange, I never bothered to look at the paint code until this thread popped up. Surprise, surprise!
This is behind the targa seal.

So, you are saying the car is really signal orange but the paint code says L32K? They have been known to be wrong before. In that case the chassis # on the Karmann badge did not match the number stamped into the rear trunk floor.
That is the first L98 I have seen, really interesting. What is the VIN for the 72?
Posted by: McMark May 9 2006, 10:03 AM
Dan, I agree with Dave, confirm the chassis number on that Karmann plate matches the ones stamped in your rear trunk. I'm curious about your car.

"Phoenix Red" is a funny marketing-speak for "Signal Orange" in 74... Or, at the very least, "Phoenix Red" is actually a shade of orange.

Sorry, no details on the other guy; I can search my computer at home but I wouldn't be optimistic... Maybe a long dig through the Rennlist archives might turn him up?

This is close the color pink IIRC that 914's were painted. The extra tranny I have is outta a 30K mile 914 that a lady had. Got T-boned in Seattle and totaled but I got the tranny.

You don't have to feel bad. I mean you probably have the only really restorable raspberry car that we know of. The car I now have wasn't a resto candidate when Britt bought it. So You don't have to feel bad... <!-- emo& -->

So I have a second owner 98 magenta aka raspberry sitting in my garage. It is running and as original as I can afford. Vin 4752909061
I will post more pics when the weather in WA get better
Looks like a jewel of a 914. Yes, please... more photos.

As an FYI, I have VIN 4732924811, code L98, originally Sepia Brown, although it was an awful shade of grubby t-shirt white when I got it. It's in the VIN database. Sepia Brown, although seemingly rare and certainly period appropriate, is not as rad as raspberry.

Raspberry Rocks!
My '75 didn't start its life that color but proudly wears it now.

Geez, Mike, that's a good looking car. Love the stance on those 5-bolt wheels too.

Thanks - those are real 14" Fuchs and all 911 suspension with a 2.7L engine from a 1976 911. About the only thing left that is 914 is the body and interior...
The tires could be a tad taller.

Picky picky -- I'd take it as is!

I bought a car with a color code 98 tag. But I can't find any information of a blue 914 color code 98. Anybody knows if this tag is the right one? Is there a way to find out which colors left the factory with '98' tag. Thanks

98 (or sometimes L98) means "Custom Porsche Color", meaning it could have been any Porsche color that was available at the time that wasn't standard on the 914.
