Christmas is coming and my sweetie's gonna get me some racing sim gear and software. Platform is Win XP PC. Is there a good one with 914's? I've got an old Win 98 version of "Need for Speed" but I know there must be way better stuff out there now. How about input devices, wheels, pedals, etc?
Get a wheel/pedal setup, and wait for GT Legends to show up in the Spring. It covers the 70s, and includes the 914, along with other 70s sports and GT cars.
No 914's in it, but find a copy of "grand prix legends" or GPL there is a huge online following for this game . The learning curve for this "game" is steep the cars are hard to drive and slide around alot like a street car (way overpowered street car) does on a track. Most realistic driving feel I have ever played with. It even supports a clutch pedal, and it runs great on a non state of the art pc just fine.
According to the website, it's out now.

OOPS
Not out in the US until 2/2006. Looks like it's playable online. If it's good, I'll be setting up a server.
There is a old "Need for Speed" Game that was a special Porsche version and had only porsches and the 914. The 914 was a drag to drive, very unrealistic.
If you go in ebay and type in.
"Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed" you can check it out.
I have been playing the GT LEGENDS demo for a little while now........IT ROCKS!!!! It is important to take out lots of the steering sensitivity though. Way too much oversteer. Also......your computer has to be up to par cpu wise, and a decent 256mb video card.

just downloaded the GT Legends demo....pretty cool...now I'll never get away from this computer and my 914 will slowly revert to a pile of rust!
I really like Playstation2 and GT4.
Helped me learn Sears and Laguna before actually driving them in the 914.
Very realistic and mostly accurate. The "right" line is rewarded.

I have this game. Real cool, Formula 1 in 1966, before wide tires, electronics, and wings. Keeping the car on the road is real tough. Does good donuts too, leaving rubber on the track too. If you over-rev the engine, it will explode and parts will fly up in the air, along with purple smoke. Spoke |
Hehehe.. i love free demos

I also have NFS Porsche unleashed on my harddrive
The do not compare w/ GT4 on PS2 however. Gt4 is 10 times more realistic, but possibly not as fun

GPL is still IMHO one of the best simulations out there. It didn't get popular because it is probably too hard for the average PC gamer. It took me 6 months before I could win my first race (on realistic mode). But like Seanery says, find the downloadable maps and upgrades, tracks, etc., and the realism is even better.
I ran Gingerman in my Formula Vee, came home and downloaded the track, set up the Eagle to respond just like a Vee, and the realism blew me away.
I've been racing it for 5 years now and it still is as difficult as the day I started. My fellow FV buddies get on-line and use it like an off-season training tool - sort of. Last weekend I ran Project Gotham on a X-360 - the graphics are cool, but the vehicle dynamics are like a high-priced video game.

Hey guys, you must get the www.playseats.com seat and then use a projector for your ultimate experience.
yeeeeHaaaaa
GTR the game that is out now with modern GT class cars (GT Legends is based on this engine) is a really fun game with easy modes to get started and you can work your way up to full SIM mode. I have been playing it for a few months and it is a blast. Driving a 600hp GT2 porsche is a kick...plus its got a real nice multiplayer mode for when you get your firends together.
And a big plus is you can pick up GTR at most of the stores now for 20bucks or less...and it will get you ready for GT legands when it comes out in a few months...I can't wait...

No one wants to buy the german version of the game???
I think ima gona get this game...
been hooked on the NFS... underground 2 it's pretty cool... a bit ricer though
NFS most wanted is out too.... if you like the Hot Pursuit-like NFS games...
NFS: porsche Unleashed was really the Best NFS game though... damage, etc... very cool... you can D/L the 914-6, too
I'm looking forward to GT legends...
one of the dislikes I had for a long time with PC- racing games, was the lack of good controllers, about 2 years ago I bought a Gravis X-Terminator... that thing RULES!!!
I need to get a steering wheel/pedal setup...
If you run GPL. You really need good pedals (or just rewire the ones you have) that have a separate axis for the brake and throttle. Most pedals just sum the 2 pedals (applying the on brakes is the same as letting off the throttle) because game designers don't understand vehicle dynamics. GPL does the physics use both the brake and throttle as separate inputs - you can trailbrake, load the front tires with the brakes while still at full throttle etc.

Wow...that's an impressive site Sean....I'm gonna have to check out this game.
Randy,
I just checked out your website. Wow! Your work is beautiful! Truly amazing stuff coming out of your workshop.
I think the secret is out. There's a lot of cool stuff and cool people in Oregon.
Hey, thanks for the compliments guys.......I love wood almost as much as I love cars. I used to restore woodies....best of both worlds but no money in it.
GT Legends Demo is available ftp://ftp.download-center.com/international/gtlegends/ as well as some other stuff that is unexplainably available to the public.
I'm downloading the demo now and have been reading through the webpage. I see the Nurburgring is there, but it looks like the F1 track not the Nordschlife (sp?). Does anyone know if it's the full course or just the F1?
I downloaded a demo a couple days ago from a different site. I got one course and 3 cars (Jag, Corvette, and Lotus Elan). It runs pretty good on my computer, 1.2 Ghz AMD w/ATI Visiontek 9600 Vid card. I wanted to make sure it would run on my setup before buying the full version. Picking up a Momo wheel/pedal thingy this afternoon

that's too bad because it plays really nice. I can only imagine doing the full ring. We race the ring a lot in Forza and Project Gotham on XBox, but the feel is much better with GT Legends
OK...I picked up a used Momo Race wheel and pedals...it works good except that the PO lost the power supply so no feedback functions. Anyone know where I can get a power supply: input 110v AC, output 24v DC ? Radio shack doesn't have one....found some on the web but big bucks.
Randy,
I've got a Logitech Formula Force which predates the Momo stuff. Here is the info from the power supply:
Model: 57DT-20-1500
P/N: 190010-0000
Input: 120VAC/60Hz 45W 480mA
Output: 20VDC/1.5A
Shield is Neg
Pin is Pos
ITE Power Supply 9835
With that info you can probably get one at Frye's. Take the pedals with you so you can make sure the plug fits correctly.
I gotta say, this is a nice demo. With the force feedback on it drives very nice. I prefer the GP course over the short course. I just wish I had some more cars & tracks...oh well, I will on Tuesday

Thanks Sean...that will help. There's no Fry's here but a couple other similar places. Did you get the 914 in your demo?
nope, it's a screenshot from the real version. I got one on ebay
I broke out Grand Prix Legends last night when I got bored with the 2 tracks of the GT Legends demo. I love this game!
Here's a pic of the broken Cooper I was driving before the motor died

Hey Sean...I downloaded GPLegends yesterday (the 2004 updated version). It looks very cool, and I love those old F1 cars, but it won't work. I can't get my Momo wheel to input steering...pedals work but no steer
The wheel works fine with NFS and GTLegends. Any ideas?...know a good support site?
Thanks
Randy,
that's odd. I'd double check the steering wheel's connection to the pedals. If that doesn't work, click on the link the GPLegends forum on the previous page. I bet someone there will be able to help you figure it out.
good luck.
