914World.com _ 914World Garage _ clutch operation help

Maybe somebody can educate me on how the clutch is supposed
to be. While driving today, I felt something give when I pressed
the clutch pedal, then it was still pulling (cable not broken) but
didn't have the pedal travel to release all the way.

Limp home, check back of cable, still fine not frayed. Check front
of cable, not frayed. Higher free play than it was. Looked at
front of tube while pressing pedal (tough to do!), tube not broken,
also firewall tube not broken.

When cable totally removed (looks good still), the release fork can
be moved about 1 inch without any resistance. Can't see enough
inside to tell anything. Should the release fork be movable (much)?
Do I have to pull the trans to find out what's wrong?

Thanks all.

Sounds to me like a broken weld on the clutch tube in the center tunnel. sad.gif

pull the pedal board and check the roll pin on the actual pedal

where the clutch pedal is attatched to the pedal shaft...

some hand movement on the throw out fork is normal.

let us know what it turns out to be.

Thanks all so far. I'm going to look into these things
tonight. Hadn't thought of the pedal roll pin.

Well, didn't see any problems with the pedal roll pin and from the light
I could get in there, no loss of the release fork bushing. Then I took
the whole cable out, and where the metal sleeve ends at the firewall,
cable is frayed bad. That end is sharp, but of course isn't supposed
to be contacting the cable. I don't know how I did that, but unless I
see something else, I'm going to get a new cable in and see.
Thanks
