914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Best way to ship a car to WCC06?

Posted by: MW 914 Dec 24 2005, 09:48 AM

My wife and I are planning to make a vacation up there to the NW so I can attend the WCC06. The plan is that I fly into Portland early Friday for the weekend. My wife and daughter will fly up to Seattle on Sunday. I'll just hop in a rental car from Portland to Seattle and we can spend the rest of the week up there visiting friends and vacationing.

Here is the rub...I would love to have my car up there but driving it adds too much time to the trip. So, I would prefer to ship it there. Any good lines on the best and cheapest way to get my car from Phoenix to Portland?

Posted by: BMITCHELL Dec 24 2005, 10:12 AM

Craig at Camp 914 should know. He ships stuff all the time.

Bruce and I talked about using the train but it was huge money, no set time when they load your car. Which means it sits in a train yard until they get ready, sounds like some rail road dude loads it. dry.gif I can imagine what that would mean for the Alien... mad.gif It travels across country switching from train to train as they make connection. No set time to arrive. Then there was the show about all the serial killers and theives that ride the rails... I'm re-thinking my trip plans....
I need a better way too. Either that or I'm driving again. The Titan will pull it but with gas prices the way they are.. and 12 mpg.. dry.gif wacko.gif

Posted by: Headrage Dec 24 2005, 10:36 AM

That's gonna be tough. The experience I had was that there was no way to actually schedule the pick-up or delivery. They gave me a "window" that the car would be picked up and delivered which varied from 3 to 5 days. Plus it took over a month for them to get the truck filled. They wont travel unless they have a full load. That ran right at $500.00. I couldn't imagine what it would cost to have it shipped with a strict time line...

mad.gif Rick,

Screw the railroad idea. I ship rail cars of potatoes all over the United States. I can deliver a sea container to Taiwan a week faster than a railcar to Boston or New York. The rail service continues to decline.

Drive the alien to So Cal and we can start a caravan up the West Coast. Spend a day or two with us and let's go!
I think we will have a large group caravaning up North.

Ship it early and I can store it for a while. I sure Craig would make the same offer. Getting it back to you would have to be worked out.

Thank you very much for the offer. If I can find a decent rate to ship it, that might be the best option.

Mike,
I'm working on the same issue, i'll pm you after the holidays and maybe we can figure it out together. I really want to have the car there too. It's nice to hear that you will be at WCC 06, with family like me.

Joe O' has already mentioned this to me. I think he is planning a 2 week vacation for the trip. I WOULD LOVE TO BE A STAGING POINT. I'm going to go in Party Centrial and will be set-up for support.

FYI Ferg, my family won't be at WCC. They are flying into Seattle on Sunday and I will leave WCC to meet them there. We'll there for a week after WCC.

Back on topic....sounds like there are a lot of cars that need to get ship[ped there. Seems like we should be able to work something out. idea.gif

I am looking forward to my second visit in Party Central. Now let's find a way to get my car there!

Posted by: GWN7 Dec 24 2005, 12:05 PM

It was about $650 CDN to ship it one way (all the data is on the puter that died). So about $1000 US to ship it return from here to Vancouver, BC. Storage was in a parking lot at both ends. As Rick mentioned, no firm delivery dates (you drop it off and 7 to 10 days later it might get there). There web site is http://www.searail.ca/

DAS quoted $1,019 USD terminal to terminal ( Minneapolis, MN to 16 miles outside of Portland ....$2,348 for door to door service. $2,648 if you want it delivered with all the bells & whistles and 16 days delivery time....cheaper to buy one there smile.gif

Posted by: bondo Dec 24 2005, 12:56 PM

You could always do what CptTripps did... Buy one when ya get there. biggrin.gif

Seriously though.. you might be able to find someone near you that's going to the WCC and has more time than 914.. they'd probably be happy to drive it up for ya. smile.gif

I investigated this for WCC05, I forget the thread now...

I thought a multi-car trailer would work but never got a reasonable quote, in fact the transporter (John Valdez) from Portland screwed me and the company he sub-contracted to ship my neo914 to Seattle from San Jose. He may still be transporting so beware.

Prices aren't cheap as someone pointed out, $600-900 one way. Timing is another issue as transporters have jobs in so many locations and different schedules. They may give you a break if you are flexible. Storing it early in OR may help. I was trying to find someone at the receiving location who needed transport back to my location so we could split the costs. The transporter said he charged the full amount whether a car was in his trailer or not. I advertised for weeks and "almost" found someone but we couldn't make the timing work for both of us. Having it at the WCC for a few days before it's return may require another arrangement with another company depending on schedules.

If you go this route I would recommend this shipper:
John @ Van Dam Trucking 701-235-3547

Probaby the cheapest way is to pay a "private" person with a truck and trailer that you trust who is willing to transport it for a nominal fee plus gas. The only drawback is their insurance won't cover your car in an accident.

Yes, we will....

Maybe you can have someone in your area who wants to go to WCC06 drive it out there for you?

Posted by: Travis Neff Dec 24 2005, 03:00 PM

You can alway pre-prepare the trip like I am, well at least thinking about it. I am thinking about moving back to Porltand, that'd be a helluva lot easier to make the event, lol.

Honestly, with a dual vacation I don't see it working out too well (for you). At the cost of shipping back and forth, why not take the extra week for the drive/up down from work? Easier said than done, but something to think about.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Dec 24 2005, 03:14 PM

Lets see...

According to mapquest... 20 hours from Hurst, TX to Los Angeles.

Another 15 hours from Los Angeles to Portland Or.

That's a little more than 4 days driving. Plus layover time in Phoneix, LA and SF.

Direct is 31 hours, via Kansas and Boise. For 4 hours difference, I would go via LA and hook up with the caravan coming out of there.

I am currently thinking about it.. but I am not sure at this time.

What are you a tourist, 4 DAYS???? We did Murphy to LA and back to Murphy about 2900 miles in 2 and a half days driving.gif and that was stopping at an AX in Riverside and Dad will not eat in the car so we had to stop for that mad.gif

The best way would be for you to drive it up to Ernie's in Flagstaff, let me take it on our trailer from there to Portland, and then return it to ABQ after the WCC so I can do the work.

You can pick it up in Aug. ph34r.gif

i saw a guy driving a huge motorhome a while back. he had 2 cars stacked on a double-deck flat trailer, (maybe it was custom made, i don't know). then he had luggage on top of that.
if you had a friend that you got along with pretty well, i think both w/spouse+ could share something like that.
advantage:
comfort/convenience
beat the hell out of a rented motorhome
drive non-stop
no hotel bills
cook at "home"
disadvantage:
co$t
sharing living space
risk
