Hi everyone,
Murt here. I am a 914-holic. I tried to quit when I sold my last 914 (ironically) on Sept 14, 2002, just before this site started. It was a silver 73 - 1.7...a picture of which is attached (hopefully viewable). Sold to a gentleman in MA who promised to keep it garaged and maintain it. That 914 was the best of three I had owned over the last 25 years.
I've been poking around here on the site for the last few weeks getting homesick. Lots of names I see are familiar from the old "renagade" club days. DD, in particular has always been an inspiration with his wealth of knowledge and willingness to help. I strayed from my 914 obsession a year after buying a boat when the wife suggested I had too many toys and needed to unload one. I've been hanging out at Jeeps Unlimited.com for a few years (my tow vehicle is a '98 5.9 Grand Cherokee) - but its so refreshing to come here and read posts from intelligent writers. I really miss that.
I went through all the owners picture posts looking to see my ex-car, but apparently the new owner is not here. I still have a pair of SS headers in the shed - maybe I can start my next 914 from those. My real dream is a six - something I've wanted since I watched Bill Sherman do a total knockdown/rebuild on a yellow '71sixer here in NJ back in 1979. (He moved to the suburbs of Portland OR shortly after that and I think he still has it - you out there Bill?)
Anyway, It does my heart good to see all the support and products currently available for 914s - not to mention the great people on this board. Please forgive me for being an ex-914 owner. I truly do aspire to own another some day and in the meantime I'll live vicariuosly through your posts. Awesome website!

many of us live vicariously through members with running 914's... |
Welcome Murt!! You will not find a better site out there for 914 knowledge/help/guidance. This is, hands down the best place to be.

...it won't take long! Clean out some room in the garage. "Honey, I need a new set of jackstands for Christmas!"

The best part:
New people post and they dont expect a response for a few days.. then they check their email
I recall a day when we used to welcome all new comers?

Welcome back to the family. We all know you can't ever really kick the 914 habit once started so you are definitely in the right asylum!
Welcome. Its common for many of us to dream about 914s though other people's garages.....
Welcome! We'll see you at the WCC.
Sorry Guys,
Christmas frenzy, you know, 34 over for a sit down dinner and all the prep/clean up that goes with it (not to mention hangovers)
Yes, I did subscribe to Twin Trunks. Back in the days when anything with 914 info was like the finding gold. Something to be read over & over again. I kept a carburetored 1.8 on the road as a daily driver in those days - repair sessions runnning well into the wee hours on several occasions - for transportation the next day. Learned by doing.
I love looking at the events picture galleries. So many 914s in one place. They were rare here on the east coast even when new - I may spot one on the road now per year.
The maturity, intelligence and mutual respect reflected in these posts are real and something I've observed about 914-ers since bulletin boards started. I've joined several other forums over the years and usually end up scrolling rather than clicking - or giving up on a thread when the flame throwers come out. Here I see benevolent roasting and dripping sarcasim - my kind of dialouge - along with some great advice and how to threads.
I could kick myself for giving the buyer of my last 914 all my spare parts, manuals, old TT Tributes and magazine articles. I have to start over again! Then again- that is half the fun, isn't it? One thing I did observe while wrenching on my last 914 - it hurts when you get up out of those contorted positions - (and I was 49 then). When I'm ready, I'll look for one that's been gone over and sorted out, it won't hurt as much that way.
Back to more surfing - rustorations are simply miracles and I just can't get enough! Six conversions - forever! See you later!

Welcome, we be a bunch of smart duds!
Murt,
Welcome and keep hanging around. If you had to spend all those hours wrenching your back and your car you must still have good stuff to share. I've got you by a couple of years and know the aches and pains you refer to. But when it comes off the jack stands and roles out of the shop it's like drugs. Nothing is like cruz'in in a 914 --- well almost nuthin.
